Peter Nelms was born in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He spent his school years in Queensland; completing his primary schooling on Thursday Island in the Torres Straits, and then started high school in Brisbane.
Peter completed high school in Cairns and joined the Royal Australian Air Force.
Peter married Susan Sneddon from Newcastle, New South Wales. They had two tours of duty in Malaysia with the RAAF; with a daughter being born there on each tour. Natalie was born at Butterworth and Rebecca was born on Penang Island.
Peter left the Air Force after serving for 25 years and now works for the Federal Government in Canberra.
