Mary and Michael Cates, Directors of the Broadway Gymnastic School, hosted this the 7th Annual Peter Vidmar Men's Gymnastics Invitational on behalf of the Broadway Gymnastics Foundation. It gave them the opportunity to salute the achievement of Olympic Gold Medalist Peter Vidmar and all the aspiring young gymnasts who came to participate.
Each year, Mary and Michael freely give of their resources, equipment, and time to stage this premiere West Coast club competition. Without their willingness to permit their staff to engage in the support of this meet, this meet could not continue.
Mary and Michael Cates founded the Broadway Gymnastic School in 1979. They determined that their gym would be open to all from the student with Olympic dreams to the physically and developmentally disabled with Special Olympic Dreams.
Parents of both gifted athletes and those with special needs have applauded the well-roundedness, safety standards, and the enjoyment of the Broadway Gymnastics School programs. Mary and Michael's philosophy emphasizes the educational and social benefits as well as the physical benefits of gymnastics in such areas as concentration, self-discipline, psychological and emotional development, social adjustment, and artistic expression. They are committing themselves to raising the fitness level of physical education in schools in California and are consultants to the Governors Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.
The Cates have received awards for their programs for special needs and Broadway Gymnastic School is the training facility for the Westside Special Olympics.
