 The game takes place after the fall
of the Empire chronicled in the Star Wars movies. (For
Star Wars buffs: It's concurrent with the time Luke is
running his Jedi Academy, as told in the Star Wars books,
and when Han and Leia's twins are training to become
Jedi.) Since the story does take place after Return of
the Jedi, Darth Vader will not make a guest appearance in
the game. Neither will Boba Fett. The JEDI KNIGHT team is
hoping to carve out its own niche in Star Wars history,
rather than ride on the fame of the more well-known Star
Wars characters. Weapons available are the Bryar pistol, the stormtrooper rifle, thermal detonators, the bowcaster, the repeater rifle, the rail detonator, sequencer charges, the concussion rifle and THE LIGHTSABER. For all the regular nasties in the levels, like Stormtroopers and AT-ST Walkers, you can use whatever weapon works best. When meeting the bosses, though switch to lightsabre and duel a Dark Jedi! Jedi Knight has so many things going for it it's difficult to know where to begin. It is essentially a mission-based Quake, combined with the rich and familiar Star Wars world, mix in some Force Powers and garnish with the lightsabre. |
The new Jedi Knight world engine, nicknamed "Sith", is completely "True 3d", supporting things like bridges, and sloping walls and floors. The characters are constructed from textured polygons, allowing smooth animation and very little pixelation. The engine that handles all of the 3d rendering is called "RenderDroid".

In Dark Forces, players took on the persona of Kyle Katarn, a young mercenary sent to infiltrate the Empire.
Through a series of live-action sequences, Jedi Knight continues the story of Katarn as he embarks on a quest into his past and learns the mysterious ways of the Jedi. With this knowledge, he must stop seven Dark Jedi from unlocking the powers of a hidden Jedi burial ground. This task forces Katarn to confront his own dark past. He then must decide his destiny. If he chooses the Dark side, he will come into enormous power and forever break from good. If he chooses the Light side, he faces seemingly insurmountable evil. Whatever path Katarn chooses will change the face of the galaxy forever.
Katarn's ultimate nemesis is Jerec, a powerful Dark Jedi who is leading a deadly group on a search for the riches of supreme power. Six diverse and dangerous Dark Jedi follow Jerec. Boc, cunning and brash, wields two lightsabers, making him a particularly vicious opponent. Sariss is strong in both the physical and mental areas of the Force. The merciless and bitter Maw doesn't value human life, is loyal to none and uses the Force with expertise. Gorc and Pic are twins that form a bizarre and grotesque team -- one is a huge eight foot monster and the other is only four feet tall -- who work and battle as a team. Yun, the youngest of the Dark Jedi, is cocky, unpredictable and eager to prove his worth to the Dark side.
