THE FIRST QUILT MADE BY DARLENE IN 1997 "THE WEDDING QUILT"

DARLENE'S "MEMORY QUILT" MADE FOR HER MOTHER 1997

Having a strong desire to quilt but not knowing if I was going to actually be able to accomplish this,I purchased remants of white-on- white material with thoughts that if it did not work out, it would not be too costly a mistake. Ergo, The Wedding Quilt was thought of. After sewing four 4X4 sqaures together to make a block I then connected them with strips of white. After stenciling a quad-hearts(facing out)design on each block and a continuos double wave throughout the strips, the hand sewing began(!) It is a small quilt for Michael's and my bed. It will always remind me of our wedding on Valentine's Day thus all of the hearts! After this project was done, I was hooked and The Memory Quilt for my Mom was being drawn on paper. My friend, Carol, was my expert advice on "how much, what to cut and when to sew. I had each child and grandchild and son-in-law of my Mother write and/or draw on "their own" block to put together and create the quilt. I chose fabrics of a blue design for the boys and a pink floral for the girls. The connecting blocks had to have some purple in it as it is my Mothers favorite color. I hand stiched each block with X's and O's representing hugs and kisses. This project was a big secret and when Michael and I flew to Texas to visit with my parents in March of 1997, I brought it to surprise my Mom! She sure was! I am currently working on two other quilts simultaneously and as fall and winter approach I will have more time to devote to them and not the gardens and golfing as in summer.
