Alabama

Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 by a handful of Alabama death row prisoners with hopes that they could bring to light the ineffectiveness and inconsistencies of the death penalty. They banded together and gradually gained the support needed to become what they are today. Project Hope to Abolish the Death Penalty has grown from that initial small group of prisoners to include people from all walks of life, across the entire nation, in England, and Canada.

P.H.A.D.P. publishes a quarterly newsletter distributed free upon request to prisoners, their families, and friends of the movement. This publication is a means by which society might see the "human behind the headlines and media hype". It contains in-depth articles on emotional topics, sometimes with witty antecdotes, and always the exposure of "America's Killing Machine".

P.H.A.D.P.'s agenda is to make sure that it is remembered that there is always human lives lost on both sides of the death penalty. We emphasize that the victim's loss IS a tragic one and retribution should be paid, but by the senseless extinguishing of another human life nothing is solved, and in fact, only serves to create yet another victim's family.

P.H.A.D.P. consistently points out the racial, social, and economical implications shown by the make up of death row populations across the nation. Anytime a man or woman's life depends on the color of their skin, how much money they have, or who they know, a travesty of justice has occured. It is our ultimate goal to make this widely known so that one day, society will stand up and demnad that this senseless waste of human life cease.
