(10/6/97) BATEMAN _ Walter John, passed away peacefully at home with his family on October 4, 1997 at the age of 67 years. Walt was born in Toronto and taught children in Calgary for many years. He especially enjoyed his time and friends at Mabel Lake. After retiring he continued to broaden his horizons with travelling, reading and learning. He will be remembered as a loving husband by his wife Sheila; and a wonderful father by his children, Kathryn and her husband Tim, Cam and his wife Kathleen, all of Calgary, and Reeve of Wasa, British Columbia. He is also survived by one grandson, Mark. At Walt's request, there will be no Funeral Service, but the family wish to invite friends to their home on Wednesday, October 8, 1997 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to visit and remember. (10/6/97) BETHUNE _ Mr. Russell Bethune of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Saturday, October 4, 1997, at the age of 82 years. Russell will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his daughters, Jeanette (Ken) of Medicine Hat, Joanne (Derek) of Nanaimo; and son Richard of Nelson. Russell also leaves behind six grandchildren, Scott, Shannon, Eric, Michelle, Michael and Wendy. Russell was predeceased by his loving wife Elsie in October of 1981. For the past several years Russell has been a resident of the Beaver Dam Lodge and an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 285. He is the loving father of two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Ken Cunningham of Airdrie, Alberta, Rennie and Steve Deibert of Calgary; and a son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Sandra of Victoria, B.C.; as well as the beloved grandfather of eleven grandchildren and one great-grandson. (10/6/97) CHALMERS _ Mr. James Hector Chalmers of Millarville, passed away at the Oilfields Hospital on October 4, 1997 at the age of 71 years. He is survived by his loving wife Wilma. His daughters, Linda Mason of High River, Jamie Smith of Bowden, Sharon Smith of Millarville, Vicky McCaghren of Calgary, Deanna Vokey of Calgary; and son Lance Chalmers of High River. One sister Ruth Maberley of High River; brothers, Robert Chalmers of Millarville and Hugh Chalmers of Denver; fourteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one daughter Marilee Hughes of Bowden in 1988, parents, Bertram and Grace Chalmers and one sister Jean Thomson. Jim ranched in the Millarville area raising horses and cattle with his father and brother. They operated a saw mill for several years. He enjoyed curling, travelling and playing cards. He was always helpful to neighbors and loved ones. He was a fine example of a dedicated rancher. Jim had a passion for the outdoors. He was a loving and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. The much beloved wife and best friend of Jim, she also leaves to cherish her memory, three children of whom she was especially proud, Todd, Trent (Carla Dawn) and Carla Marie. In addition, she leaves her parents, Cecile and Fred Panchuk of Yorkton, Saskatchewan; her sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Ron Campbell of Edmonton, Sharron and Armond Tetreault of Morden, Manitoba, Dianne and Harry Chunick of Winnipeg, Karen and Ray Morris of Victoria; her brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Val Panchuk of Winnipeg; and twelve nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by her father-in-law Phil Dean and her sister-in-law and husband, Dianne and Randy Holfeld of Yorkton, Saskatchewan and their children. Geri was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on February 6, 1948. She married Jim in 1967 and spent the next thirty years of her life nurturing those things she loved most, her family, her friends, and her art. For over ten years, she owned and operated her own business, "The Doll Doctor" and gained a national reputation for her excellence as a restoration artist specializing in antique dolls and teddy bears. (10/6/97) GERLACH _ Esther F. Gerlach (nee Gerlock) passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Friday, October 3, 1997. She was much loved by everyone who knew her. Esther will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched the most, her husband Otto and daughters, Sherry Lynn and Debra Ann. She also was loved and will be missed by her sisters, Lily, Hady, Clara, Shirley, Joan and Jinx; sisters-in-law, Annette and Traute and their families; many dear friends, and other beloved family members. Esther lived a rich and full life and was able to connect with everyone she came in contact with. She devoted herself to her family and had unconditional love for them. As a wife and mother, she was as good as they come, always bringing joy to the lives of those around her. She was fond of shopping, going out for lunch, and was known for her nanaimo bars. Esther was predeceased by her parents, Terese and John, her much loved grandmother Elizabeth, and brothers, John and Artie. Born in Rostern, Saskatchewan on June 24, 1924, she moved to Calgary in 1929. In 1956, she married Otto Gerlach - the light and love of her life - and started the family she would devote her life to, beginning what she felt was the best part of her life. She will be remembered always for her warmth, kindness and generous soul. (10/6/97) GIMBEL _ Ruth Helen Johnson Gimbel passed to her rest on October 4, 1997, at her residence in Calgary, at the age of 96 years. Ruth was born in Isanti, Minnesota on September 28, 1901 to Swedish immigrants. Her father became a Seventh-day Adventist minister and his responsibilities took him to Lincoln, Nebraska where Ruth spent most of her growing up years. In 1917 the family moved to Edmonton and then to Falum, Alberta where Ruth's father engaged in gospel work among Scandinavian settlers in central Alberta. Ruth attended Normal School in Edmonton. Her teaching career led her to a country school east of Beiseker, Alberta. There she meet and married Jacob Allan Gimbel. Seven children were born to this union. Ruth and Jake's home rang with music as Ruth accompanied male quartets and other vocal rehearsals and taught piano lessons to many community children. Ruth also served as church pianist and organist and played for weddings, funerals, and community music programs. Like many farm women, Ruth planted, harvested and preserved a garden, sewed for her family and cooked for threshing crews. Ruth and Jake farmed until their retirement in 1967, when they moved to Calgary. Despite the financial stresses during and following the great depression, they managed to provide a Christian education for each family member. Ruth was an active and devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Ruth is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Hervey Gimbel and his wife Ann of Redlands, California, Courtney Gimbel and his wife Bette of Chehalis, Washington, Dr. Howard Gimbel and his wife Judy of Calgary; three daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and her husband Pastor Dan Skoretz of Colton, California, Naida and her husband Bill Oliver of Kelowna, Glenda and her husband Dr. Donald Schafer of Portland, Oregon; as well as twenty-six grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren and a great great-grandson. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Jacob in 1996, and daughter Averil in 1928. She was responsible for the operation and growth of the family's business, Sayles Saddlery Ltd. after the passing of her husband. She is survived by her brother Dr. David C. Sayles and her nephews, Lyn and Lance Sayles, all of Huntsville, Alabama, U.S.A. and Cyril and Harvey Sayles her loving nephews in Calgary. (10/6/97) KRAHN _ Henry, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 3, 1997 at the age of 78 years. He will be sadly missed by Margaret, his wife of fifty-two years. He is survived by his sister Elma Gast of Okotoks, and his sister-in-law Tillie Krahn of Calgary. Henry was predeceased by sisters, Ottila Klaudt, Mary Makus, Katie Langlands and Ida Krahn, and by brothers, Gus, John and Dave. Henry spent from 1939 to 1945 in the Royal Canadian Army. Serving overseas from 1942 until the end of the war, when he returned to Canada with his new war bride, whom he married in Colchester, England in 1945. After retiring from the army, Henry went to work for MacCoshum's Van Lines and worked as a truck driver until his retirement in 1983. He was an avid camper and loved to curl. He also enjoyed travelling with his wife. (10/6/97) OLIVER _ Dr. Thomas A. Oliver, on Thursday, October 2, 1997, at home, surrounded by his loving family, Margaret, his wife of forty-three years; children, Mark (Sheila), Jane, George (Marla), Jim; and grandson Ian. His accidental death followed four weeks after successful pallidotomy surgery which relieved many of the problems of Parkinson's Disease afflicting him for twenty years. Tom was born in Winnipeg, December 16, 1924, and received his education there, including a BSc and MSc (Geology) from the University of Manitoba and subsequently, a Ph.D. from UCLA. He worked as a geologist for California Standard (Chevron) for seven years, and joined the University of Calgary in 1957, founding the Department of Geology, and beginning a thirty year teaching and research career. He held various positions, including Professor of Geology, Dept. Head, Assistant to the Vice-President (Academic), and Dean of Science. Since his retirement in 1987, Tom kept very active, and excelled at golf and league bowling. Tom will be remembered for his devotion to his family and profession, and by his numerous friends and colleagues for his sense of humour. A Celebration of Tom's Life will be held today, October 6, 1997, at the University Club (MacEwan Hall), U of C, at 3:00 p.m. Flowers are gratefully declined. (10/6/97) PASZEK _ Telesfor Paszek passed away on Thursday, October 2, 1997 at the age of 65 in Calgary. Telesfor is survived by four children, Nina (Bragg Creek), Louise (Calgary), Camille (St. Albert), and Daniel (Edmonton); seven grandchildren; his wife Mairi Matheson; and three stepchildren, Heather (Qatar), Fraser (Port McNeil, B.C.) and Ian (Vancouver). He is also survived by his brothers and their wives, Henry and Carrol, Ted and Janet; and by his sister Lucie Falconer and her husband Ron, all of Edmonton. Telesfor was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Sophie, and by his first wife Denise. Born in 1932 in Poland, he emigrated to Canada with his parents in 1938. Telesfor grew up on a farm at Flat Lake, AB, near St. Paul, until he joined the RCAF in 1950. He served as an enlisted man until he was accepted for university training and graduated as a Civil Engineer. When the Forces were integrated in 1968, he became a member of the Canadian Military Engineer Branch. His final two positions with the military were as Base Construction Engineer at Canadian Forces Base Calgary, and at National Defense Headquarters, Ottawa. After retiring from the military in 1980, LCol (Ret'd) Paszek became Streets Maintenance Engineer for the City of Calgary's Engineering and Environmental Services Department (EESD), Streets Division. He was known for having started the "Pothole Pete" program. Telesfor then went on to be Division Manager with the Fleet Services Department followed by a transfer to the Human Resources Department's Safety Section, and then with Special Projects of EESD, Administrative Services Division. Telesfor was an active member of the Rotary Club of Calgary Centennial, where he was President Elect upon his passing. He was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship in 1997. Telesfor served as President of the CPWA and was the author of a program for accrediting Municipal Public Works Supervisors. A Memorial Service will be held, 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 7 at Holy Spirit Parish, 10827 - 24 Street S.W. in Calgary. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated, 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 9 at St. Charles Catholic Parish, 176 Avenue and 112 Street in Edmonton, with Cremation to follow. (10/6/97) PHILLIPS _ William (Bill) A., beloved husband of Mrs. Mary Phillips of Calgary, passed into the presence of his Lord on October 2, 1997 at the age of 85 years. Bill is the loving father of Bill (Mary Evelyn) of Sycamore, Illinois and from Calgary, AB, Mary-Louise Lapish, Jim (Donna), Wilf (Lynnda), Fred and Gordon; as well as eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his father James, mother Sarah and his brother Jim. Bill joined the Calgary Fire Department in 1936 and retired as "Division Chief" in 1972. He set up the first Rescue Car in 1952 as well as the first City of Calgary Ambulance Service in 1970. He pioneered Mouth to Mouth Resuscitation in Southern Alberta in the early 1950's. He was a lifelong member of St. John Ambulance. Bill was active in all aspects of sports and was a "Sportsman of the Year" recipient in 1979. He was a founding member of Bethany Chapel. Bill will be sadly missed by family and friends.
