AUSENHUS _ Calvin Wayne Ausenhus passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 10, 1997 at the age of 44 years. He was born in Didsbury, Alberta on April 11, 1953, where he received his high school education. He went on to receive his degree in Agriculture at the University of Alberta. He married Beverley Howlett on December 13, 1975. Living in Disbury, his career included farming, commodities brokerage, and agri-marketing. He leaves to mourn his loving wife Beverley; three children, daughter Kari of Calgary; two sons, Shaun and Erik at home in Didsbury; his parents, Don and Leta Ausenhus of Didsbury; one brother, Merlin of Houston, Texas; two sisters, Ellen (Royal) Stewart of Calgary, Jeanine White of Calgary; eleven nieces and nephews; aunts, Mildred Ausenhus of Victoria, B.C., Lois Ausenhus of San Diego, CA, Marguerite McCrae of Calgary, Dorothy Monner of Milo, AB; uncle Rowland Jackson of Calgary, AB, and great-aunt Alice Ausenhus of Victoria, B.C.; and numerous cousins, as well as many friends and neighbours. BAXTER _ Rose Christina Baxter of Calgary, passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital on October 7, 1997 at the age of 69 years. Rose is survived by her beloved husband Robert (Bob); her two loving daughters, Judy and her husband Minoru, and Lynda and her husband Steve; and her dear sister Jessie Laverick. Rose was born at her home in Calgary on May 10, 1928 to Mr. and Mrs. William Hamilton and lived in Calgary all her life. She attended school at King Edward and Western Canada High School and was always very active in sports. She started speed skating at the Crystal Skating Rink where she met and later married her husband Bob. Rose competed in provincial speed skating championships and later was very active in figure skating both at the Calgary Winter Club and Calalta Skating Club. Her other interests included a lifetime association with the Girl Guides of Canada. But above all, she was a devoted mother and loving wife. Rose and Bob celebrated their Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary on September 1, 1997. A Memorial Service will be held at SOUTHMINSTER UNITED CHURCH 3818 - 14A Street S.W. at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, October 17. BIBBY _ John Bibby, beloved husband of Leona Bibby of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview General Hospital on Monday, October 13, 1997 at the age of 86 years. John was born on November 9, 1910 in Lancaster, England and emigrated from England with his parents to Alberta. He met and married Leona Clarke in 1937 and remained happily married for sixty years. John had a very successful career as a school Principal/Vice Principal for thirty years. He led a very active and fulfilling retirement and showed a keen interest in wilderness activities such as cross-country skiing, canoeing, hiking, cycling and camping. Besides his loving wife, John is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Malcolm and Marion Bibby of Ottawa, ON; his daughter and son-in-law, Lee and Doug Dartnell of Calgary; as well as three grandchildren, Julie, Jana and Katie. He is also survived by his sister Ethel Haslett of Edmonton, AB; his sister-in-law Emily Bibby of Westlock, AB; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. John is predeceased by his son Bruce in 1967. BRONSCH _ It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Mavis Bronsch, (nee Madole) on October 13, 1997 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary at the age of 72 years. Mavis was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on July 23, 1925. In 1991 she moved to Calgary where she lived very happily. Mavis will be lovingly remembered by her family, Jacquie Leask and husband Robert of Calgary; Ronald Bronsch and wife Darlene of Regina; Mervin Bronsch and wife Kelly of Surrey, B.C. She is also survived by her sister Muriel Denton of Saskatoon; and brother Cecil Madole and wife Lomie of Calgary. CORMIER _ Mrs. Dorothy Cormier of Calgary passed away at the Peter Lougheed Centre on October 12, 1997 at the age of 79 years. Dorothy was born in Calgary and lived and went to school in Inglewood. She was united in marriage to Raymond Cormier in 1943. She travelled extensively throughout Canada with her husband who was with the Royal Canadian Air Force. They returned to the Inglewood area in 1969 and were active in the Community Association. She was an avid lover of bingo. She is survived by one son Brian and his wife Dale Cormier of Calgary; a twin brother George (Joan) Nutall of Chatham, Ontario; a step-daughter Rena (Bill) Drezdoff and family of Vancouver, BC; and numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. COTTON _ Gordon James Cotton died peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane, on Thursday, October 9, 1997 at the age of 84 years. Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his daughter and son-in-law, Judy (Brian) Pelchat; and grandchildren, Adrienne and Graeme of Whitehorse, Yukon; dear friend Betty Young of Cochrane; sisters, Edna Castonia of Osoyoos, BC., Evelyn (Omer) Gallant of Turner Valley, Lilian (Al) Crowder of Kempeville, Ontario, Midge Dryden of Estevan, Sask; and brothers, Fred of Taber, AB, and Ray (Hazel) of Brooks, AB; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gordon was predeceased by his wife Bea, his parents, Alice and James, and mother-in-law Pat. Gordon was a farmer and businessman in the Cochrane area from the early 1950's until his retirement in 1981, prior to that he ranched with his brother in the Brooks area, where he grew up, and spent several years in the Air Force during and after World War II. He was actively involved in many community organizations and sat on the council of the M.D. of Rockyview for many years. This was a role he took very seriously. Gordon was a man of tremendous dignity and personal courage. His quiet sense of humour will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. D'ARCY _ Marjorie G. D'Arcy of Calgary passed away at the Beverly Care Centre on Saturday, October 11, 1997 at the age of 93 years. Marjorie and Thomas G. (Gerry) D'Arcy were married in 1926. While Gerry worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, Marjorie was actively involved volunteering with the Red Cross for seventeen years, The Alberta General Hospital Volunteers' Association for over thirty years, and was a member of Central United Church since 1945. She is the loving mother of two sons, William G. D'Arcy of St. Louis, Missouri and Robert B. D'Arcy of Vancouver, BC; two granddaughters, Charlotte D'Arcy and Lorraine D'Arcy; as well as four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Gerry, in 1978. DIETRICH _ Teresa Mary, (nee Fraser), passed away at the Rockyview Lodge, Crossfield, Alberta, on October 9, 1997, at the age of 91 years. Teresa was born on October 5, 1906 in Letellier, Manitoba. The Fraser family moved to Edmonton in 1911, she married James J. Dietrich in 1933 and together with their family they moved to Calgary in 1950. Teresa was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church for many years. For Teresa, her family was always first and foremost and she will be remembered as a loving mother and proud grandmother. Teresa is survived by a son Jim Dietrich; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Marg Anderson (John), Kathleen Duquesne (George), all of Calgary, Grace Johnson of Rockland, Ontario and Helen Van Tintelen (Stef) of Calgary. GOODSIR _ Mrs. Jean (Jeannie) Goodsir of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on October 11, 1997 after a brief illness at the age of 82 years. Jeannie was born March 26, 1915 in Glasgow, Scotland and moved to Calgary in 1953. She worked at the Calgary Ranchman's Club for three years, then went on to work at the Calgary Petroleum Club for twenty-eight years. Jeannie was a Past Worthy Matron, Order of the Eastern Star Unity Chapter Number 26, and was presently a member of the North Star Chapter. She had held the office of Sergeant at Arms of the Royal Canadian Legion, Kensington Branch 264. She also belonged to the St. Andrew's Community Painting Group until 1996. Jeannie will be remembered by those who knew and loved her for her cheerful spirit and her sense of humor. Jeannie is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Margaret Williams and Caroline and Don Moore; two grandsons, Stephen C. Williams and Brian McPhillips; a granddaughter Lisa Goodsir-Greco; and four great-grandchildren, all of Calgary. She is also survived by two sisters, Norma Barr of Vancouver Island and Rosa Stirling of Toronto; two brothers, Jay Farrelly and John Farrelly, both of Scotland; and numerous nieces and nephews in Canada, the United States, the U.K., Austria, and New Zealand. She was predeceased by her husband David Goodsir in 1974. GRAVES _ William Royal Graves passed away peacefully October 10, 1997 at the age of 86 after a lengthy illness. He will be sadly missed by his wife Wilda (nee Cross) of Arbutus Ridge, B.C.; son Gerry (Welmoet), Olds, Alberta; daughters, Ginny (Ken) Stott, Georgia (Tom) Desmarais; grandchildren, Lisa and Brendan Rooney, Michael and Scott Desmarais; sister Jean Peach and brother George (Grace) Graves, all of Calgary. Roy was actively involved in the Petroleum Industry for over fifty years and retired in 1976 as Vice-President of Dow Canada. His knowledge and contributions to the industry and the community were far reaching and respected. His community involvement included being President of the Calgary Stampeders Football Club, Honorary Life Director of the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, National Director of the Royal Canadian Flying Club Association and past President of the Downtown Rotary Club. He also was an active member of the Calgary Golf and Country Club, Glencoe Club, Ranchman's Club and Chamber of Commerce. Special thanks to the staff of Cowichan Lodge and Dr. Roy who lovingly cared for him over the past five years. He will be remembered as a gentle man and humanitarian. HACKETT _ Stuart Michael Hackett passed away suddenly at his home, Monday, October 13, 1997. He was born in London, England on April 8, 1954, the same year his family moved to Calgary. He attended Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary and went on to a successful career in Financial Planning. Besides his loving wife Pat, Vern is survived by his two sons, Rick and his wife Tara, Gary and his wife Betty Ann; and two grandchildren Tamara and Douglas, all of Edmonton; as well as by his daughter Cathy and her husband Stuart Berry of Calgary. Vern is also survived by his mother Jessie; sister Pat and her husband Bill Roberts; and brothers, Terry and his wife Aileen, and Ken and his wife Marguerite. Vern was predeceased by his father Reginald Harvey in 1976. HOLT _ Isaac Bullock Holt, beloved husband of Edith Holt, passed away at home, in Lethbridge, on October 13, 1997 at the age of 81 years. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by his sons, Edwin (LeAnne) of Calgary and Wayne (Barbara) of Lethbridge; his daughter Marlene Christensen; and daughter-in-law Evelyn (Wayne) Baker, both of Lethbridge; nineteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one brother Murray (Louella) Holt; and one sister Gladys (Woodrow) Stringam. He was predeceased by his son Brian (1980), his parents, Franklin and Sarah Holt, brothers, Grant, Truman, Harris, William, and his sisters, Emma Dahl, Ruth Salmon, Leah Bryson and Florence Holt. Isaac was born in Raymond on July 17, 1916. He served a mission for the LDS Church in the Southern States. He married Edith May Higley on August 10, 1943 and farmed in the Chestermere Lake District, near Calgary, until 1980, when they moved to Lethbridge. He was very active in both community and church organizations throughout his life, and served as a Bishop in Calgary. Ike filled his life with his children and his grandchildren. He loved hard work and travelled extensively with his wife and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who loved him. JAMES _ Mr. Thomas Austin James of Taber passed away on Sunday, October 12, 1997 at the age of 73 years. Austin was born at Medicine Hat on September 30, 1924 and was the son of Ted and Vivian James. Austin received his schooling at Taber, joining the R.C.A.F. in 1942, returning to Taber in 1944. He married Linda Dietz in 1945 and later commenced employment with the Oliver Corporation. In 1956, Austin joined John Deere and served as Territory Manager. During his twenty-six years with John Deere, he resided in various provinces. Austin earned numerous awards with John Deere, the most prestigious being the "Territory Manager of the Year" award. In 1982, Austin retired from John Deere, returning to Taber in 1985. Austin was a very proud and active member of the Royal Canadian Legion. In 1987, Austin became President of the Taber Branch of the Legion of which he was a Life Member. He was also a member of the Associated Canadian Travellers and the Air Force Association of Canada. Austin is survived by his wife and best friend Florence (Babs) Treber and her children; his two daughters, Judy (Ron) Savage of Calgary and their daughters, Leslie Savage and husband Greg Klafki, and Lori Savage, Jacquelyn (Gary) Norris of Coquitlam, B.C. and their daughter Kymm Norris; and also by numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his wife Linda, a son John, his parents, two sisters, Kathleen and Colleen, and two brothers, Wilf and Lawrence. JANISZEWSKI _ Robert Jack. On October 7, 1997, Robert Jack Janiszewski traded pain for paradise. He left this world as he lived in it, with grace and dignity. Jack began his journey on January 22, 1933 in Evansburg, Alberta. He was born to parents, Joseph and Mary Janiszewski, who are now deceased. He worked at various occupations across North America achieving numerous awards for his expertise. Jack was an integral part of the development of the Oil and Gas Industry and was held in esteem by his colleagues. The mountains and their streams and the works of God in nature were his great joy and source of inspiration. We will miss our Jack, husband, father, grandfather, friend. Forever in our hearts and never to be forgotten by his wife, Edith; Diane, Jim, Kristin and Courtlin Quinn, Shelly, Gerry, Stefan and Kimberly Tenove. KOWAL _ Mrs. Helen Kowal of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on October 10, 1997 at the age of 88 years. Helen will be lovingly remembered by her family, Mary Gill and husband Bob of Newcastle, Ontario; Katherine Lang and husband Fred; John Kowal and wife Ann; and Joseph Kowal all of Richmond BC. Helen will also be remembered by her eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her beloved sisters, Anne Kuchervy of Prince George, BC., and Mary Romaniuk of Calgary; four nephews, three nieces and grand-nephews and grand-nieces. She was predeceased by her husband Michael in 1977, and her brother George Romaniuk in 1989. Helen was born in Kucheriw, Bukovina, Ukraine and came to Canada in 1912 with her mother Paraskeva Kowal to join her father Nicholas Romaniuk in Montreal, Quebec. In 1915, the family moved to Sheho, Saskatchewan were she was raised and educated. In 1924, she married Michael Kowal in Sheho, and later moved to Ituna, Saskatchewan where they farmed. They moved to Lavington, BC. in 1960, and then to Calgary where she has resided until the time of her passing. Helen was an active member of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Church, and a member of the Ukrainian Women's Association, along with St. Vladimir's Golden Age Club. LAW _ James Law, beloved husband of Pat, died in Calgary October 11, 1997, after a brief illness. Jim is survived by his loving children, Graham and his wife Rosemary, and their sons, Colin and Martin; Fiona and her husband Alan and their sons, Tyler and Stephen; Matt and his wife Danelle and their sons, Iain and Andrew; and Jennifer and her husband Bill and their daughter Joanna; and by Jim's brothers living in Scotland, Ross and Bill, and their families. Jim was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, February 12, 1923 and received his B.Sc. (Hons. Geology) from Edinburgh University. He served for four years in the RNVR Fleet Air Arm, 818 Squadron. After the war, he worked for the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co. (BP) in Iran and Kuwait. Married in 1949, he and Pat came to Calgary where he was with California Standard, later transferring to Amoseas in France and Libya. Returning to Canada, he worked as a consultant and independent geologist. His colleagues in the petroleum industry will remember his role as President of the CSPG (1974) and his publications. Jim continued to travel with Pat in retirement to places such as New Zealand, India, Thailand and Chile. Always active, Jim enjoyed hiking in the mountains, sailing and gardening. He loved music and instilled an appreciation for it and for the outdoors in his children. His family knew him as a devoted father and husband, quick to laugh and slow to criticize. A Memorial Service will be held at Earl Grey Golf Club on Wednesday, October 15, at 3:00 p.m.

She obtained a Masters Degree in Education from South East State University of Oklahoma and taught at Davis, Oklahoma. Edith moved to Calgary in 1964, residing there until moving to Claresholm in 1979. Edith was an active member of Christ the King Catholic Church, The Claresholm Community Choir, Claresholm Fair Board, Meals on Wheels and other community activities. She was past President of the Diocesan C.W.L. Calgary, and President of the Local Chapter of the C.W.L. at the time of her passing. SIMPSON _ Mrs. Genevieve, beloved wife of Ernie, passed away peacefully at the Carewest Sarcee on October 8, 1997 at the age of 79 years, after a lengthy illness of dementia. She will also be lovingly remembered by her sister Elizabeth O'Neil of Glace Bay, NS; brother Ian Vickers of St. Catharines, ON; as well as several nieces and nephews. Genevieve liked to travel and she even spent three years camping in Western Europe in the late sixties, with her husband who was stationed there with the Military. RUSK _ Douglas Malcolm, born June 7, 1941. Doug slipped quietly away on Thanksgiving Day, October 13, 1997 in Vancouver, BC. He died as courageously as he lived. Remembering Doug as a bridge over troubled waters are Gail, his always cherished ex-wife, and mother of his children, Darren, Craig and Marnie; his sister Margaret Ruge; friends, Kira, Gwen and Collin. THURBER _ Alice Rose of Calgary, much beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary on October 12, 1997 at the age of 79 years. She will always be lovingly remembered by her cherished family, son Wayne and daughter-in-law Faye Thurber, Blackie; daughter Carol Thurber, Calgary; grandsons, Shawn and his wife Teresa, Calgary, Kevin and his wife Dalene, Vulcan; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Jacklyn Alicia, Kyle and Tyler Jack. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Vonnie Watson, Vulcan and their family; sister-in-law Muriel Thurber, High River and her family; sister-in-law Marge Sessa, Seattle and her family. She was predeceased by her husband Jack in 1992, with whom she farmed in the Blackie district for thirty years. Besides raising a family and assisting with farming duties, Alice pursued one of her true talents - teaching. She was an admired and respected teacher and principal in Mossleigh and Vulcan for twenty-seven years. She and Jack retired to Calgary in 1976. Throughout her life, Alice had many hobbies and interests - curling, writing, golf, bridge and music, but one of her main loves was painting. She was loved and treasured by her family and friends who will greatly miss her sweet, gentle and caring nature. UPTON _ Mr. Charles Wilfred Upton, beloved husband of Mrs. J. Donna Upton of Airdrie, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the Rockyview General Hospital on Saturday, October 11, 1997 at the age of 69 years. Charles was born in Pincher Creek, Alberta on February 22, 1928. He joined the Air Force in 1951. He went to work with British American (now Gulf Canada) in 1958, then married Donna on April 11, 1959. In 1971 he moved to Rocky Mountain House to join Aquitaine (Canterra/Husky Oil). Charles took early retirement in 1986 to enjoy life with Donna, becoming a member of Canada's snowbird association (to winter in Arizona) while summers were spent in Chilliwack, B.C. in 1991, they moved back to Alberta to enjoy the lives of grandsons, settling in Wetaskiwin, then in early 1997, Airdrie. Besides his life-long partner, he will be lovingly remembered by one daughter Teri and her husband Blaine; and one son Lawrence and his wife Tanya; and seven grandsons, Michael, Christopher, David and Matthew Ruttan of Calgary, Jordan, Taylor and Dakota Upton of Calgary; and numerous friends and family. He was predeceased by his mother Elda in December 1984, father Errol in September 1974, brother James in May 1941, and infant son in July 1965. Funeral Services will be held at Salvation Army - Glenmore Temple (921 - 68 Avenue S.W.), on Friday, October 17, 1997 at 2:00 p.m. with Captain Larry Martin officiating. VIETTO _ Ms. Mary Vietto of Calgary, passed away at the George Boyack Nursing Home on October 9, 1997 at the age of 81 years. A native Calgarian, Ms. Vietto had lived here most of her life. She attended school at St. Angela's where she will be remembered for her acting ability as well she attended St. Mary's Girls High School. She leaves to mourn, her sister Margaret Armbrust; three nieces, Marlene (Ralph) Gradishar, Doreen Armbrust, Patti (Garth) Marrale; three cousins, Peter (Margaret) Juigalli, Margaret Marasco, all of Calgary, and Aurora Brandelli of Garden Grove, California; a great-niece Marla (Steve) Cohen; a great-nephew Michael (Cathy) Gradishar; a great-great-nephew Sean; and two great-great-nieces, Larissa and Elizabeth, all of Calgary. Nora will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her very good friend Monica Kleppe; her former husband Albert E. (Tini) Werkman Sr; her two daughters, Dini (Ed) Gerritse and Lucy Thomas; her six sons, Jon (Peggy), Tony, Albert E. Jr., Henk, John C. (Patty), Bill (Barb); two brothers and a sister in Holland; numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and friends. WRIGHT _ Mary Clark passed away peacefully at Bow View Manor on October 10, 1997 in her 99th year. She was a lifelong loving aunt to Stewart, Irene, Phyllis and Wendy and will be sadly missed. Mary was predeceased by her brother Rev. J. Allan Wright and his wife Mary and by two other brothers and their wives and a nephew. She devoted her life to volunteer work serving in the Baptist Church Offices in Glasgow, Scotland during the war, then the Mission Station in Chogoria, Kenya. Mary was National Secretary for the W.A. of Scotland for many years and did volunteer work for seventeen years at the Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, Scotland before emigrating to Canada in 1979 to be with her niece and family. A Private Service, conducted by Rev. Dr. Ray Waldock will be held. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made to Operation Eyesight Universal.
