(9/5/97) BEAL _ August 3, 1916 to September 3, 1997. Elmer James (Bud), passed away peacefully at age of 81 years at the Rockyview Hospital. Left to celebrate his life is the family he adored, Marion, his loving wife for fifty-six years; his daughter Marilyn J. Beal; his daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Reg Lippitt; and his grandchildren, Stephen and Catherine Lippitt. He is also survived by his brother Jack and family. Bud was a native Calgarian who was a born salesman from an early age, including car sales and commercial real estate. Bud was so proud of his forty-five year membership in AA. He was the longest standing member of AA who joined in Calgary. Through his many illnesses and hospital stays, his ability to bounce back with a zest for life and a sense of humour touched many lives. (9/5/97) BISHOP _ Mrs. Beulah Grace Bishop of Calgary, passed away at the Glamorgan Care Centre on September 3, 1997, at the age of 96 years. Born October 24, 1901 in Dawson, North Dakota, Beulah came to Canada in 1904 with her parents, who homesteaded near Lockwood, Saskatchewan. She married W.F. Bishop (Bish) in 1923 and lived in various Saskatchewan towns where "Bish" taught school. They moved to Calgary in 1954 and then to the Mountview Lodge in Olds in 1987. Bish predeceased her in 1988. In the last year of her life, Beulah enjoyed a special friendship with Tessa, Justin, Sara and Jackie. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary and the Rebecca Lodge for many years. She will be lovingly remembered by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Gerry Jacques, and Louise and Norman Warthe; as well as by seven grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren. (9/5/97) BLOOMENTHAL _ Zena Bloomenthal, much loved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully in Edmonton on the 3rd day of September 1997. She was born in Russia on September 1, 1912 and immigrated to Canada in 1926 with her sister. She resided in Winnipeg before moving to Calgary. She married Alter Bloomenthal on March 4, 1934. They had a wonderful marriage for fifty-one years, until Alter's death in 1984. In 1991, Zena move to Edmonton. She is survived by her loving children, Faye (Cyril) Kay of Edmonton, and Alfred (Clarice) Bloomenthal of Victoria. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Lewis (Julie) Kay of Toronto, Lisa (Charles) Sherman of Toronto, Harold (Wendi) Bloomenthal of Victoria, Julie (Greg) Joy of Vancouver, and Dena Bloomenthal of Calgary; as well as by four great grandchildren, Andrew and Joshua Bloomenthal, and Chelsea and Jordana Sherman. Zena was predeceased by her granddaughter Risa Bloomenthal in 1976. Zena was a kind and loving person whose gentleness and caring enriched the lives of her family and many friends. She will be sorely missed but gratefully remembered. She was born in Gateshead, County Durham, England, where she lived for most of her life. Her later years in England were spent in Wideopen, Northumberland, England. She emigrated to Canada in 1984 to be closer to her son Russell, his wife Pauline and their daughter Evelyn. She is survived by her only remaining sibling Elsie Carling of Newton Abbott, Devon, England. (9/5/97) CHEN _ Jason Chen, beloved husband of Mrs. Anne Chen of Calgary, passed away at the Peter Lougheed Centre on August 24, 1997, because of cancer, at the age of 62 years. Jason was born on May 27, 1935 in Indonesia. He enjoyed a career as a geologist in the oil and gas industries in China and later on, as an engineering assistant in Canada. When he was young, Jason was a badminton player and a track athlete. He also practiced tai chi regularly. Jason was good at fixing things in the house, the garage and the garden. He will be remembered for his dedication to his work, to his children, and for his gentle manners. Besides his loving wife Anne, Jason Chen is also survived by his children, Walter and Margaret. He is also survived by six brothers and a sister, all of Indonesia. (9/5/97) DAW _ Thomas Alfred "Tom" passed away suddenly at the Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta, September 3, 1997 at the age of 76 years. Beloved husband of Hazel for fifty-one years of Vulcan; father of two daughters, Linda and Rick Rabb of Calgary, Pat and Mark Thompson of Fort McMurray; two sons, Alfred and Dianne of Vulcan, Larry and Anne of Edmonton; ten grandchildren; three brothers, Ed of Nanaimo, B.C., Fred, Francis and Jessie, all of Gleichen; loving sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law, numerous nieces and nephews who were very special to Tom. Tom was predeceased by his parents and brother William. Tom was born April 13, 1921 on the family homestead near Sunnynook, Alberta. He began working for farmers in the area, rode the rails for a short time then began working for CP Rail at Ogden Shops in Calgary. During this time he toured to Mossleigh with his cousin, where he met Hazel Larson. In 1941 he joined the Army Service Corps at the age of twenty years. He served overseas at Sicily, Italy, Belgium and finally in Holland. In 1946 he returned home and married Hazel on February 21. They farmed at Standard until 1953, then moved to Queenstown to work in a garage with his brother-in-law Jack Bushell. In 1970 they moved to Strathmore until retiring in 1982, and moved to Mossleigh the same year. They came to Vulcan in 1988 where they have continued to reside since. Creating things was Tom's passion. He spent many hours in his shop at the house building things. He was a wizard when it came to solving puzzles. Most often he would draw what he wanted to build, then proceeded to construct his project. His natural ability for solving problems and the special times with his family will be greatly missed. (9/5/97) McANDREWS _ Wilfred Gerard McAndrews passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 2, 1997 at the age of 78 years. Wilfred was born on November 3, 1918 at Retlaw, Alberta, the third child of John Albert McAndrews and Anastasia McAndrews (nee Higgins). Wilfred served as a pilot officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. He married Maxine Linda Winkler on January 16, 1943, at Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. After the war, Wilfred operated a general store in Manitoba, worked for Safeway for a period of time in Calgary and finally started to work for the CO-OP system at Eckville CO-OP in 1949. Continuing his career with the Co-operative System, he left Eckville in 1966 and moved to Calgary, Red Deer, Winnipeg and Edmonton. He finished his career at the head office in Saskatoon, responsible for the federated regional retail and wholesale operations in Western Canada. Wilfred is survived and will be missed dearly by sisters, Anastasia MacDonald and Dolores Skappak; and brothers, Adrian McAndrews, Brian McAndrews and Cyril McAndrews; his daughter Margaret Anne (Donald) Sheets; his sons, Murray (Beverly) McAndrews, Dr. Gerald (Sandra) McAndrews and Stewart (Conny) McAndrews. Wilfred was predeceased by his wife Maxine Linda, his son Phillip James, his brother John (who died at birth in 1929), and his brother Jerome. (9/5/97) SMITH _ Harvey Raymond Smith, beloved husband of Olive Smith of Calgary, passed away at the Colonel Belcher Hospital on Tuesday, September 2, 1997 after a lengthy illness at the age of 76 years. Harvey was born February 22, 1921 in Medicine Hat, AB. He received his education in Medicine Hat, graduating from high school. Harvey enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders in 1939 and was wounded in Italy and discharged thereafter. Harvey married Olive Brustad on July 19, 1947 and made Calgary their home. He was employed as a salesman of industrial equipment and enjoyed the travel and new friends made with his profession. Harvey was a lifetime member of the Elks and the Seaforth Association, as well as a member of the Royal Canadian Legion. His favorite trip was with Olive to the Orient to visit their daughter Joanne. Harvey also enjoyed many hours of researching his family's history as well as spending numerous hours with a favorite novel. Besides his loving wife Olive, Harvey is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Laurie Smith of Sparks, Nevada, USA; a daughter Joanne Ouellet of Calgary; four grandchildren, Kristopher and Spencer Head, and Jessica and Kristen Smith; as well as his sister Doris Rynbend of Calgary. (9/5/97) SUTHERLAND _ Mr. Robert (Bob) Duncan Sutherland, most beloved husband of Jean, passed away at the age of 77 years after a lengthy and courageous struggle with cancer. His memory also lives on through his daughter Jeanette; sons, Rob, Gordon and Neil; and daughters-in-law, Lisa, Sherri and Agnes. He also greatly loved and was loved by his wonderful grandchildren, Tyler, James, Megan, Scott and Heather. He is lovingly remembered by Nancy and Rae Scott, as well as Alex and Rhoda Sutherland, all residing in Inverness, Scotland. Bob was born in Inverness, Scotland and at a young age moved with his family to Glasgow. He began work in the locomotive industry and during World War II served in the R.A.F. as an aircraft machinist. After the war he returned to Glasgow but fate intervened in 1948 when he met and ultimately wed the true love of his life, Jean. Jean and Bob settled in Calgary in 1949 where he began work at the C.P.R. Ogden Shop as a locomotive machinist and eventually retired as a supervisor of the Wheel Shop in 1980. Bob had an unbounded passion and talent for soccer, playing both semi-professionally in the U.K. and the Calgary Callies as a Canadian Citizen. Bob never lost his love of Scotland and was never shy in sharing this fact with both friends and passing acquaintances. Whether a small child happily singing a wee tune like "I Belong To Glasgow" or a total stranger humming along with Dad while he whistled "Scotland The Brave", Bob shared the love of his homeland with all. He believed in the common man and that one should treat all as equal. He lived his life with a humble and loving heart with care and compassion for all living things. His Scottish wit never left him and brought a smile or a chuckle to all he met. He will be forever loved by family and friends. Sans peur. Verna was the loving mother of two daughters, Cathy Grist (Ken), Kitchener, and Laura Kauffeldt (Wayne) Calgary. She had five grandchildren, Michael and Stephen Onotsky, and Jennifer, Kim and Amy Kauffeldt; as well as two great-grandsons, Joseph Onotsky and Cameron Onotsky. (9/5/97) WILSON _ Mrs. Vera Louise Wilson (nee Brackney), beloved wife of Mr. Charles Boyd Wilson of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on August 21, 1997, at the age of 85 years. Vera was born in Mirror, Alberta on April 14, 1912. Vera and Boyd were married on December 1, 1946 at the Red Deer United Church, and resided in Calgary until 1972 when they moved to Lynn Valley near Red Deer. Vera was a wonderful gardener, her green thumb was very apparent, as was her love for flowers and birds. Vera was a very positive person and was always cheerful. She will be greatly missed by her husband and her children, and they will cherish the memories of the happy and loving home she created. Besides her loving husband, Vera will be dearly missed by her children, Douglas Boyd Brackney Wilson of Wabamun, AB, Keith Harold Wilson, and Drinda Maureen MacCrimmon Wilson, both of Calgary; as well as four grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Lucille McLeod, Florence Kaiser, both of Red Deer, and Bunny Aris of Stettler; and her brother James Brackney of Red Deer. Vera was predeceased by her sister Irma Blocksom, and her brother Harold Brackney.
