BEINGESSNER _ Mrs. Mary Hazel Beingessner (nee McAndrews) of Calgary, passed away peacefully, in the company of family, at the Rockyview Hospital on February 10, 1998 at the age of 100 years. Mary was born on December 6, 1897 in Bay City, Michigan, but was raised in Spokane and Chewalah, Washington. In 1918 she immigrated to Canada and married Frank X. Beingessner. Homesteading near Champion, Alberta, they farmed for many years, and lovingly raised a family of six children. The family subsequently moved to Brant, High River, and in 1956, to Calgary. Mary's long and fruitful life was devoted entirely to her family, her church, and her countless friends. In December of 1997, hundreds of those that her life had touched gathered in Calgary to recognize her centennial birthday and to celebrate her life. Blessed with an unfaltering memory and an unequalled gift for storytelling, "Gramma" reminisced for hours, pausing only to share a loving hug, and a personal, forever-to-be-cherished moment, with each and every great or great-great-grandchild in attendance. Always humble in her own good fortune, Mary believed that all good things in her life were blessings from God. She will be lovingly remembered for her warmth, her smile, and her indomitable spirit. Mary was predeceased by her husband Frank, her sisters, Helen and Margaret, her brother Harold, and three sons, Elmer, Harold and Jim. She will be sadly missed by her daughters, Florence Pickering and Dot (John) Wesch; her son Robert (Arlene) Beingessner; two daughters-in-law, Marg Beingessner and Elaine Beingessner; twelve grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. BROWN _ William E. (Bill) Brown, beloved husband of Margaret and loving father of Maureen and Jacqueline of Calgary, passed away February 9, 1998 at the age of 67 years following a courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, the late John and Carrie Brown of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Bill was born in Medicine Hat where he entered the funeral profession in 1952. He moved to Calgary and was employed at Jacques Funeral Home prior to joining the staff of Leyden's Funeral Home where he remained until his passing. He was an extremely patient and kind man to his family, friends and those he dealt with in his chosen profession. ELFNER _ Major Donald G. Elfner, CD., retired RCCS-RCE., P.ENG., passed away at the Rockyview Hospital after a lengthy illness on February 11, 1998 at the age of 78 years. Don served six years in the RCCS during the Second World War and then attended U of A, graduating in Mining Engineering class of 1950, after which he joined the Royal Canadian Engineers and enjoyed a variety of interesting postings such as being seconded to the St. Lawrence Seaway Authority and supervising works on the St. Lambert lock in 1955 and 1956. From 1959 to 1960 he served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in the Gaza Strip. As well, he instructed in Military Engineering at RCSME, Chilliwack. Following retirement from the forces, Don worked with ICBC for seven happy years. Don will be remembered by his sense of humor, his love for the great outdoors and for his compassion for those less fortunate than himself. He is survived by his loving wife Joyce; a daughter Adrienne Hazen of Bathurst; a son Donald and his wife Billie of Calgary; as well as his beloved grandchildren, Cameron Dickinson of Halifax, Christopher Hazen of Bathurst and Adam and Beverly Elfner of Calgary. Don is also survived by his brother Lloyd of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother, father and brother Flight Officer Paul Elfner. GABLEHOUSE _ Ruben Samuel Gablehouse, beloved husband of Mrs. Olive Gablehouse of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Sunday, February 8, 1998 at the age of 79 years. He was born in Calgary on October 8, 1918. From birth until he joined the Navy, Ruben lived in Calgary and various small towns around Calgary. Ruben was a Stoker in the Navy from 1941 to 1945 and was discharged as a Chief Petty Officer. After the war, he resumed employment as a Steam Engineer, working in several plants around Calgary until his retirement from the University of Calgary in 1984. Ruben was artistic, which was demonstrated by the home he built and many of its contents. Ruben is survived by his best friend and loving wife Olive. He is also survived by a son Brian; a daughter Judy; two grandchildren, Naomi (Cary) and Jeremy; and a great-granddaughter Kylee. Ruben is also survived by three sisters, Edna, Helen (Don), Betty; two brothers, Robert (Rose) and Don (Muriel); a sister-in-law Eileen; and brothers-in-law, Harold and Simeon; plus nieces, nephews and many friends. GIERS _ Mr. Stanley (Stan) Giers, beloved husband of Mrs. Toby Giers of Calgary, passed away at the Foothills Hospital on Sunday, February 8, 1998 at the age of 80 years. Stan was born October 4, 1917 in Poland and served in the Polish Army during the second world war, and was a P.O.W. for four years during that time. He joined the American Occupation Forces in Europe after the war and served as Corporal. He came to Canada in August, 1951 and married Toby in May, 1957 in Vancouver. In Canada he worked in the construction industry and with Richmond Plywood for twenty-six years until his retirement in 1983. In Vancouver, Stan was a member of St. Casimir's Catholic Parish for many years until 1992 when he and Toby moved to Calgary. Besides his loving wife Toby, Stan is also survived by his son David and daughter-in-law Margaret of Calgary; and his nieces and nephews in Poland. Nicki was born at Denmark on October 9, 1910. She had been a long-time resident of Taber, AB before moving to Sicamous, BC in July of 1993. McCOY _ Edward George of Carstairs passed away in a tragic motor vehicle accident near Lac La Biche on February 7, 1998. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Allan McDougall (Ann) of Calgary; her grandchildren, Dr. Laura McDougall (Jerome) of Trinidad, Dr. Hugh McDougall (Jeri) of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kent McDougall (Therese) of Calgary, Lynn Stevenson (Cal) of Grande Prairie, Dr. Ken Cody (Cheryl) of Calgary and Rand Cody (Sandra) of Calgary. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Carly, Natalie, Riley, Tannis, Kimberly, Heather, Chelsea, Sara and Greg; and a son-in-law Dr. Don Cody. She was predeceased by her husband Hugh and son Kenneth of Berwyn. Edna was born June 29, 1901 in Perth, Ontario. McKAY _ Jessie Walker McKay, passed away at the Brentwood Care Centre, in Calgary, on Wednesday, February 11, 1998 at the age of 89 years. Mrs. McKay is survived by her three sons, Walter (Lois), George (Karen) and William (Donna); and by a daughter Linda Shepheard (Wayne), all of Calgary. She was predeceased by her husband of forty-five years, William Alexander McKay in 1976, and by a daughter Betty May Relf, who passed on at the age of fifty-seven, in 1991. Also among her surviving family are fourteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Jessie came to Calgary from her native Glasgow, Scotland in 1930. Here she met and married her life-long companion, William Alexander McKay, who had emigrated from the Inverness area of the Scottish highlands in 1927. They married in 1931, and settled permanently in Calgary, where they worked and raised their family. Their long life together was interrupted for only a brief period during the Second World War when Bill was stationed in Britain. For the last eighteen months, Mrs. McKay had been a resident of the Brentwood Care Centre. The family would like to acknowledge the devoted and consummate care provided by all of the staff at the Nursing Home facility and to express their appreciation for the thoughtfulness and friendship given to their mother. McNALLY _ J. Raymond of Calgary, Alberta died comfortably surrounded by his loving family at the Rockyview Hospital on February 11, 1998 at the age of 72 years. Born on May 17, 1925 at Claresholm, Alberta, he grew up in High River and moved to Calgary after World War II. He was married in 1951 and was the father of five children. He joined the Calgary Federal Post Office in 1957 and retired after thirty-three years of service. At the Kingsland Community Association, he worked on the Executive, coached baseball and hockey, raised funds and ran the community bingo for twenty-five years. He was recently active with the Blind Bowlers Association and Stanley Park Lawn Bowlers. In 1989, the Federal Post Office presented Ray with the Silver Excellence Award for his community service. He was an Associate Member of the Royal Canadian Legion No. 285 Branch. He will be vividly remembered by all for his endless energy and humour. Ray is survived by his close friend Phyllis McNally and his children, Sheila, Scott, Janice, David and Phyllis. Other family members surviving him are Susan Zemaitaitis, Linda Beltrano, Rick Hogg and Steve Keegan; along with seven grandchildren, Eric McNally, Theresa McNally, Jessica McNally, Richard McNally, Cheyenne McNally, Cameron Keegan and Marina Keegan. OLSON _ Shirley Clarice Olson passed away at the Bethany Care Centre on Monday, February 9, 1998 at the age of 58 years, after a long and courageous battle with M.S. RECKSIEDLER _ Harold (Rex) Recksiedler, beloved husband and best friend of Fay for the past thirty years, passed away peacefully at the Foothills Hospital on Sunday, February 8, 1998. Besides his loving wife Fay, Rex is survived by children and their families, Annette of Airdrie, Esther (Rick) Bowey of Stettler, Wendy (Paul) Gibeau of Whitby, Ontario; daughter-in-law Mary Lou of Calgary; eight grandchildren and one great-grandson; sisters, Laura (Jack) Fraser of Kenora, Ontario, Aster Pullon of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and Cleone (Dave) Crouch of Engolf, Ontario; numerous nieces and nephews; as well as his extended family on Fay's side. Rex was predeceased by two sons, his mother and father, one sister and two brothers-in-law. Rex was born October 12, 1926 at Winnipeg where he attended school. He joined the Navy, after the Navy later, he came out west where he worked for Poole Construction. A couple of years later he joined Greyhound Lines of Canada as a bus driver where he worked for forty-two years, retiring in June 1987. Rex was a kind and loving man who will be missed dearly by all whose lives he touched. SCHEMERHORN _ Elizabeth Jane (Betty) Schemerhorn (nee Spicer) of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital on Tuesday, February 10, 1998 after a brief illness at the age of 99 years. Betty was born on January 3, 1899 in Carman, Manitoba. Betty grew up in the Fort Frances, Ontario area, moving to the Calgary area in the late 1920's. Betty also lived in the British Columbia interior from 1955 to 1969, before returning to Calgary. Betty married Bill Schemerhorn, with whom she spent over sixty years. Betty and Bill enjoyed thirty winters as "Snowbirds" in Phoenix, Arizona. Betty was a very active member of her Church and was also an enthusiastic sportsperson who actively followed sports and enjoyed curling, lawn bowling and golfing as recently as three years ago. Betty is the loving mother of Olive McIntosh of Calgary. Betty is survived by four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. STOTTS _ Sarah Stotts of Calgary, passed away at the Beverly Centre on Wednesday, February 11, 1998 at the age of 93 years. Sarah first came to the west in 1927 as a school teacher in a little one room school on the prairies of Saskatchewan. Two years later she moved to the Big Valley area of Alberta where she met Bill Stotts whom she married in 1931. In 1941 the family moved to Calgary. Sarah was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish for nearly fifty years along with other community involvements including the West Side Seniors. She is the loving mother of three sons, Gerald (Sally), Lawrence (Marion) of Calgary, Barry (Rita) of Camrose. Sarah will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by fourteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, four sisters, all of Ontario and numerous nieces and nephews. George will be greatly missed by his wife and best friend of twenty years, Jacqueline. George studied at Fullerton Junior College in Fullerton, California. After returning to Calgary, George was employed in the oil and gas industry and retired in 1989 after twenty-one years of service with AMOCO Canada. George had a zest for life and his infectious fun-loving spirit affected all who knew him. His desire to always be helpful led him to be actively involved with the CalAlta Figure Skating Club in the late 1960's and early 1970's. George held several Chairman positions in the Club and helped to coordinate Alberta Sectional Competitions, Skate Canada, and the World Figure Skating Championships. George's passion in life was hockey. He established the Calgary 55+ Hockey League in 1989 for retired seniors. He acted as Commissioner of the League and enjoyed playing as often as he could, limited only by the availability of "ice time". George's summer passion was golf. He enjoyed playing at the Wintergreen Golf Club with his wife Jacquie and with the Wintergreen "Old Boys". WATKINS _ Bernice Helen Watkins, beloved wife of Raymond H.C. Watkins of Calgary, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 1998 after a lengthy and rare neurological brain disorder at the age of 70 years. The youngest daughter of Amelia and Donald Shaw, Bea was born on September 20, 1927 in Brandon, Manitoba. She was educated and later studied and practiced Psychiatric Nursing in Brandon. Bea and Ray were married on May 24, 1954 and resided in various towns throughout Western Canada due to Ray's work with Imperial Oil. During this time they were blessed with and raised their four children. Bea was an avid musician, enjoyed gardening, cooking, curling, was very artistic and she and Ray travelled extensively. WILSON _ Mr. John "Jack" Sutherland Wilson of Sylvan Lake, passed away February 11, 1998 at the Lacombe Community Health Care Centre after a short illness at the age of 85 years. He was born September 10, 1912 in Leith, Scotland. He was predeceased by his wife Leona in May 1997, and one brother and four sisters. Jack leaves to mourn, three sons of Calgary, John (Jodi), Rick (Donna) and Alan (Shelly); and one daughter Dona (Gordon) of Sylvan Lake; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Jack was a member of the Masons, the Friendship Club, and served on the board for the Sylvan Lake Extended Care Society. He also drove the seniors bus for a few years. He loved to golf, bowl and travel. He bestowed upon all those who knew him his life's experiences, those memories will forever live with us. WONG _ Edward Wong, beloved husband of Moi Wong of Calgary, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 11, 1998 at the age of 68 years. Besides his loving wife Moi, Ed is survived by two sons, Byron and Leslie of Calgary; two sisters, Lilly Hum, Yvonne Wong; three brothers, Jack, Jim, Lawrence; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ed owned and operated the Central Grocery Store in Calgary for many years. Ed will be sadly missed by family and friends. A special thanks to the Doctors and Staff of the ICU at the Rockyview Hospital. A Memorial Service will be held at the Chinese United Church (124 - 2 Avenue S.W.), on Sunday, February 15, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. David Wen officiating. WOODS _ Jennie Kathleen passed away peacefully at home on February 9, 1998 at the age of 80. She is
survived by her loving husband Jim of forty-nine years. Besides her husband, she leaves to celebrate her
life, daughter Elizabeth (Wayne) Barrowcliffe of Calgary; son Bill (Connie) of Calgary; daughter d'Arcy
(Alfred) Gamble of Markerville; and son Cameron (Cheryl) of Virginia; and grandchildren, Lisa and
Kristin Barrowcliffe, Christopher, Kelsey and Scott Gamble, Jesse Steele, and Zachery Woods. Surviving
sisters are Nell Godfrey of Toronto, Elsie Symonds of Texas, Olive Sproul of Mahone Bay, N.S.; and
numerous nieces and nephews. Jennie was predeceased by both parents, her father William Salamandick,
her mother Pearl Salamandick and by her sister Elizabeth Irwin. Jennie was born on June 27, 1917 at her
parents' farm near Royal Park, Alberta. Her early schooling was at Park Grove School near Vegreville and
later went to Vegreville High. When at High School she lived with her sister Nell. She commenced training
as a violinist and obtained her ATCM from the Toronto Conservatory. After commuting to various farms
to teach violin for a while, she moved into Edmonton where she worked for a dry-cleaning establishment,
practicing the violin in a coal shed during slow hours. Next she clerked in a grocery and then Walkrite, a
ladies ready-to-wear store. All the while she was pursuing her musical career and joined the Edmonton
Philharmonic as a second violin. It was while she worked at Walkrite that she met Jim, a law student, and
married him on May 15, 1948. With the advent of the children and Jim's transfer to Calgary, Jennie's
musical career was cut short, although she continued to love classical music throughout her life. All who
knew her were captivated by her upbeat personality. Many said of her, "When you're feeling low and
despondent, all you need is a meeting with Jennie to bring joy back into your life." It was this joyous
approach to life that is her lasting testament to the world. Friends may pay their respects to Jennie from
6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 12 at CALGARY CREMATORIUM CHAPEL, 3219 - 4 Street
N.W., Calgary, AB. A Service of thanksgiving and celebration will be held at St. Cyprian's Anglican
Church, 2828 - 19 Street N.W., on Friday, February 13, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Brian Way
