Knights of St. John

The Order of St. John was founded in Jerusalem. Its mission was to defend and care for pilgrims and Christian sick during the Crusades. The knights lived like monks. They were divided into eight groups according to nationality and were housed in separate compounds(inns). The knights established their headquarters in Rhodes in 1309 after being driven out of the Holy Land. They held the island for just over 200 years. After leaving Rhodes, Malta became the knights base until it was captured by napoleon in 1798. The monastic order still exists in Rome.
