TONY MORDINO led the Waterbury, CT. "gang", whichincluded Danny Galullo, to the West Haven Speedway in 1953 to do battle with the likes of "Wild Bill" Greco and Johnny "King" Cambino. For about the next 10 years Tony Mordino and Bill Greco would put on some of the fiercest battles ever witnessed on any Speedway.
Tony moved on to Plainville Stadium in 1962 where he captured six straight features and 13 overall that year against tough competitors like George Lombardo, Moe "Money Bags" Gherzi and many others.
Tony became a regular at Riverside Park in 1966and continued his legendary battles withthe Riverside King at that time, Bill Greco. Tony went on to capture six features at Riverside Park between 1966 and 1972, placing him 38th on the all-time Riverside win list ahead of such Riverside Legends as Rene Charland, Moon Burgess, Johnny Cambino, Sparky Belmont and "Jap" Membrino.
Tony's last race was in 1975 in the first Thompson Speedway 300.Tony started "50th" and finished 9th, then officially retired.
Tony unfortunately left us on November 1, 1999 after one of his only losing battles, cancer. Tony was one of the really "CLASS ACTS" of the sport.
After Tony retired he once told Billy Greco he would give up 10 years of his life for just 2 more in a Stock Car. I'd bet Tony and Danny Galullo are running side by side on some racetrack somewhere.
