During the Cardassian occupation of Bajor, Gul Dukat was the Prefect in Charge of Bajor, and was also in command of the orb processing station, Terok Nor. He assumed command of Terok Nor in 2360. Dukat's son Mekor was also born in this year. Gul Dukat has six other children. During the Occupation, Dukat had a Bajoran mistress who bore him a child, a daughter named Ziyal. In 2365, Dukat enlisted the services of Odo in the investigation of a Bajoran chemist who had been murdered on the station. He had seen Odo at a reception held for the Cardassian High Command, and had been impressed with him. Although Odo was unsuccessful in solving the crime, Dukat kept him on as Security Chief. The Cardassians withdrew from Bajor in 2369, after Bajor had been stripped of its natural resources. In 2370 , Dukat was abducted by an anti-Cardassian organization that would later proclaim itself as the Maquis. He was taken aboard a freighter, and brought to an uncharted planet near the Demilitarized Zone. A Vulcan member of the Maquis attempted to mind-meld with him in order to obtain information, but was unsuccessful because of Dukat's strong mental discipline. He was rescued by a party from Deep Space Nine, and taken to the station, only to learn that the Cardassian Central Command had claimed that he was part of a group of misguided officers who were supplying weapons to the Cardassian colonists. Having previously denied that Central Command was smuggling weaponry into the Demilitarized Zone, Dukat realized that had been deceived by his own superiors, some of whom still blamed him for not killing every Bajoran he could during the withdrawl from Bajor. Working with Sisko, Gul Dukat helped to prevent a full-scale war between Cardassia and the Maquis. After a brief stay on Deep Space Nine, Dukat returned to Cardassia. Following the theft of U.S.S. Defiant from Deep Space Nine in 2371 by Maquis sympathizer, Thomas Riker, Dukat was called to the station and informed that the Defiant was in the hands of the Maquis. Angered that Starfleet would allow such a breach of security, Dukat told Commander Sisko that the Central Command would send a small fleet after the Defiant to ensure its destruction at all costs, even to the point of violating the Demilitarized Zone Treaty. In a deal suggested by Sisko, Dukat agreed to let the Defiant and her Maquis crew go in exchange for Riker and the sensor information collected on the Orias system by the Defiant. Riker agreed to these conditions and surrendered to one of the ships that had pursued him to the Orias system. The standard sentence for Thomas Riker's offence was death, but at Sisko's request, Dukat was able to convince the Ministry of Justice to commute Riker's sentence to life imprisonment in a Cardassian labor camp. Gul Dukat hates a Cardassian man by the name of Elim Garak. He believes that Garak had his father tortured and executed. Because Ziyal was in love with Garak, Dukat disowned his daughter. When the Dominion invaded the Alpha Quadrant, it was learned that secret meetings between Cardassia and the Dominion had been held, and Cardassia had become a member of the Dominion. Gul Dukat was made the new military advisor to the Cardassian government. To Dukat's delight, the Dominion attacked Deep Space Nine, and took over the station. Several months later, Starfleet regained possession of Deep Space Nine with the help of the New Resistance. When Damar learned that Ziyal was a member of the New Resistance, he killed her. Gul Dukat was so grief stricken that he refused to abandon Deep Space Nine and Ziyal's body. He was captured and taken into custody by Starfleet. On his way to stand trial, the starship he was being transported on was attacked and destroyed. Captain Sisko was injured, and Gul Dukat helped him into a shuttlecraft and they abandoned ship. Dukat and Captain Sisko ended up on a deserted planet. Dukat became obsessed with the idea of getting Benjamin to respect him. When Captain Sisko said that he would never respect Dukat because of the things he had done during the Occupation, Dukat went mad and decided that he should kill every single Bajoran. He then stole the shuttlecraft and left the planet to carry out his new mission.
