Interveiw with Toni Yates of WB
TY:Tell us about Mary.
JB:Mary is very strong and independent and she's um, an athlete, which is very very cool. And she's just one of the kids in the family that really knows what she wants. She doesn't take any crap from anybody. She's really cool with just everything that goes along as long as she -- she has kind of a say. I guess you can say she's kind of opinionated once in a while. But she's just a really good person all around.
TY:You said it's really cool that she's an athlete.
JB: Yeah! A lot of the characters that I've auditioned for have just been kinda like, you know, I'm this character and I don't do anything, But Mary is a star basketball player, MVP, senior, she plays on the senior team and she's probably a sophomore this year, and that's really cool because I am totally into sports -- that's all I ever do. I play soccer, basketball -- I play everything. And so that's something that's just really cool about Mary. She's always playing with the guys and, you know, doing everything that's really athletic and fun.
TY:How do the fans who are your age relate to Mary?
JB: She's normal; she's like everybody else. She makes mistakes. She's really good with her sisters and brothers, which is good for other kids to see. To see that a family can work -- and yes, everybody fights. Even the Camdens fight, but every once in a while … You can always be friends. She's just a good role model because she's normal … She plays sports, she goes to school, she has lots of trouble with guys as every girl, I'm sure, does. So she's fun.
TY:Tell me what's it's been like being a part of the Camden family with the other actors.
JB:It’s been so fun. From the pilot that we did last year was so exciting. It's just gotten better and better. Our shows are awesome. Our writing is great. Our cast is wonderful. I mean just everything with the show is just so fun. I don't really have any complaints. And yeah there's some days where I just want to be home and then there's some days that it's like, I love this. I'm having a great time. I'm having so much fun with everybody.
TY:And when you're not in front of the camera, do you find yourself creating a real bond?
JB:Oh yeah, we'll all go for … lunch today. It's usually like me, David, Beverly, and if Andrew's around … We'll probably go into most likely my trailer and we'll play video games and we'll wrestle and we have huge wrestling matches with music and we watch videos, play ping pong and have school together. We've really gotten close, especially as kids. Our parents and I are close but not like the kids are. We just have a lot of fun together and I guess that's why we get along so well. TY:That’s what they say about the show -- that it feels real.
JB:Yes! It's TV and some of the things we say and some of the things we do are not as realistic as it would be in real life but that's television. But other than that, everyone just gets along so well and we just love each other, I guess. We just have a really good time. It's not too hard to want to be close and have a really good emotional scene with one of the other actors.
TY:Now they say you're a natural at this acting stuff. When did you get involved with acting?
JB:At eight. I started singing and musicals, and little theater productions, but I never did anything big. And then I did Annie when I moved to Colorado and I was Annie in that and I just started thinking about doing TV and being a movie star and I came out here to do a competition and after three years I got 7th Heaven.
TY: Are we going to see Mary sing at all?
JB:I don't know. We saw Mary sing last season. And I didn't like it very much.
