The plaque reads: 5P4 James T. Davis, RA 14 696 877,1 JUN 1936 - 22 DEC 1961. On 22 DEC 61 at approximately 1140 hrs, SP4 Davis an advisor from the 3rd RRU (now the 509th RRCUV) and with 10 RVN soldiers, was proceeding west on RVN Hwy 10 approx. 20 Km west of Saigon when an electrical controlled mine was exploded under the rear of his truck, in the ensuing engagement he was killed. 5P4 Davis was the first US Soldier to lose his life in the RVN conflict. This monument is dedicated in memory of 5P4 Davis as well as other soldiers of the 509th RR Grp that have died as a result of hostile action in RVN.
