Welcome to my Klave Lineage Page. I have been working on this line for a very long time now. This started many years ago as my grandmother did not know a thing about her Klave ancestry except for her aunt Florence, and so this journey began. I believe the information below is correct, but if you find any discrepancies please email me, as much information has been sent to me, and not all is proven. I hope you find the information helpful to you.

Descendants of Wilhelm A. L. Kleve

*****************1st Generation*****************

     Wilhelm A. L. Kleve was born 21 February 1828 in Germany/Prussia. He married Johanna Maria Sophia Rhinehardt. Wilhelm went by William and Johanna went by Sophia. Also note that the Kleve name at times was spelled Klewe and Klave. Most of their children went by Klave. Sophia was born on 12 April 1828 in Germany. Their family migrated to the United States in 1869. William and his family was listed in the 1870 Read Twp., Clayton Co., Iowa Census records, and the 1880 Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa Census records. William died on 07 March 1898. Sophia was listed in the 1900 Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa Census records living with her son William. In that Census, Sophia stated she had 10 children with 4 still living at that time. Sophia died on 19 October 1901. Both William and Sophia are buried in the Grant Township Cemetery, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. My brother and I visited this small German cemetery a few years ago. It is out in the country a few miles out of LeMars, Plymouth Co., Iowa. William and Sophia's children were:

1.  John Henry Christian Klave, (See 2nd Generation), born 30 August 1853 in Germany.

2.  William C. J. Klave, born in August 1861 in Germany. He married Helena "Lena" Janssen/Johnson. Lena was born in October 1869 in Germany, the daughter of Gert Janssen/Johnson and Sena Gunda (Thank you Betty Peters). Their family was listed in the 1900 Grant & Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa Census, 1910 Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa Census records, the 1913 Sioux Falls, South Dakota City Directory, the 1916 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa City Directory, the 1920 Washington Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa Census, and the 1925 Le Mars, Plymouth Co., Iowa Census records. William died on 02 Oct 1939 and is buried in the Floyd Cemetery, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa. Their children were:

     a.  Lewis Martin Klave, born 18 Sep 1894, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. Lewis fought in World War II. He died on 31 Dec 1955 in Seattle, King Co., Oregon, and is buried in the Willamette National Cemetery, Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon. Children: Irene Klave.

     b.  Theresa Marie Caroline Klave, born 16 Aug 1896, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. She married Victor Caliva. Victor was born on 13 Dec 1886 in Piana de Graci, Italy. Their family was listed in the 1930 San Antonia, Los Angeles Co., California Census, and the 1940 Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California Census records. Theresa died on 30 Oct 1981, and Victor ided on 04 Mar 1952, both in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., California. Children: Victor G. and Joseph V. Caliva./font>

     c.  Gazina J. Klave, born Sep 1898, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. She married Vernon Harvey McAninch. Vernon was born on 22 Jul 1896 in Iowa, the son of Harvey McAninch and Eleanor Anderson. Their family was listed in the 1920 Logan, Sioux Co., Iowa Census, the 1925 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa Census, and the 1930 Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa Census. Vernon died on 21 Jul 1950 in Alameda Co., California. She married second to a Mr. Bert. Children: Harvey V. McAninch.

     d.  Herman William Klave, born 03 Mar 1900, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa.

     e.  Irene Sophia Klave, born 0 Dec 1901, Arcadia Twp., Carroll Co., Iowa.

     f.  George J. Klave, born 1904, Nebraska. He married Sophia Olson on 01 Dec 1926 in Mennehaha Co., South Dakota. Their family was listed in the 1930 and 1940 Elk Point, Union Co., South Dakota Census records. Children: Clifford Klave.

     g.  Wilhelmina Dedericka "Minnie" Klave, born 30 Apr 1906, Iowa. She married Gail Stoltz.

     h.   Rosa Klave, born 08 Apr 1909, Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa. She married William Wallace McKettrick on 21 Mar 1932 in Union Co., South Dakota. William was born on 12 Jul 1910 in Lae Mars, Plymouth Co., Iowa, the son of Thomas McKettrick and Anna Gerdes. Their family was listed in the 1940 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa Census records. William died on 03 Feb 1978 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa. Children: Patricia and Clinton McKittrick.

3.  Rudolph Klave, born on 19 October 1863 in Germany. He married Theda Janssen/Johnson on 03 December 1891 in the Grant Twp. Lutheran Church, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. Theda was born on 14 August 1873 in Germany. Their family was listed in the 1900 Hawarden, Sioux Co, Iowa Census, the 1910 Washington Twp., Sioux Co., Iowa Census, the 1920 and 1925 Washington Twp., Sioux Co., Iowa Census, and the 1930 Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa Census records. Thank you for the information on this family Betty Peters. Rudolph died on 18 Jan 1941 and Theda died on 12 Oct 1962, both in Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa. They both are buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton, Sioux Co., Iowa. Their children were:

     a.  Sophia M. Klave, born 19 Mar 1893, Sioux Co., Iowa. She married John Van Wyhe. John was born on 19 Jan 1889 in Iowa, the son of John W. Van Wyhe and Gertie Reuisch. Their family was listed in the 1920, 1925, 1930, and 1940 Washington, Sioux Co., Iowa Census records. Sophia died in Oct 1981 in Sioux Co., Iowa, and John died in Apr 1972. They both are buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton, Sioux Co., Iowa. Children: Lawrence, Hazel, John William, Elmer, Viola, Leona, Robert, and Raymond Van Wyhe.

     b.  Lena Johanna Klave, born 18 May 1895, Iowa. She married Milton Perry Edmonds. Milton was born on 08 May 1891 in Iowa, the son of William Edmonds and Eva Sweigger. Their family was listed in the 1920,1925, and 1930 Buncombe, Sioux Co., Iowa Census records. Lena died in Oct 1982 in Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa. Children: William M., Helen W., James L., Richard W., Essie E., and Lavern O. Edmonds.

     c.  Rudolph John "Rudy" Klave, born 06 Oct 1897, Plymouth Co., Iowa. He married Anna Edith Steinfadt on 10 Mar 1921 in Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa. Anna was born on 28 Jun 1902 in Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa, the daughter of Joseph Steinfadt and Maggie Mahlmann. Their family was listed in the 1925 Washington Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa Census, and the 1940 Preston, Plymouth Co., Iowa Census records. Rudy died on 15 Aug 1984 and Anna died on 20 Sep 1976. They both are buried in the Riverside Cemetery, Akron, Sioux Co., Iowa. Children: Harold and Harlan Klave.

     d.  Anna J. Klave, born 05 Nov 1899, Washington Twp., Sioux Co., Iowa. She married Roy Marshall. Roy was born in 1905 in Maryland, the son of Chester Marshall and Sarah Henny. Their family was listed in the 1925 Eagle, Sioux Co., Iowa Census, and the 1930 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa Census. Roy died sometime after that Census as Anna was a widow in the 1940 Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa Census records. Children: Fern E., Evelyn M., and Ralph O. Marshall

     e.  Theda Mary Klave, born 16 May 1901, Washington Twp., Sioux Co., Iowa. She married Onno Herman Johnson. Onno was born on 10 Aug 1903 in Eagle, Sioux Co., Iowa, the son of Onno Johnson and Louise Leeker. Their family was listed in the 1930 Buncombe, Sioux Co., Iowa Census records. Theda died on 11 Mar 2000, and Onno died in Dec 1987, both in Sioux Co., Iowa. Children: Shirley F. Johnson.

     f.  Onno H. Klave, born 04 Mar 1903, Washington Twp., Sioux Co., Iowa. He married Lillian _____. Lillian was born in 1909 in Iowa. They were listed in the 1940 Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa Census records. Onno died in Aug 1976.

     g.  Louise A. "Lizzie" Klave, born 06 Jun 1905, Washington Twp., Sioux Co., Iowa. She married Robert H. Short. Robert was born on 13 Mar 1897 in Sioux Co., Iowa, the son of Charles M. and Minerva Short. Louise died on 08 Feb 1991, and Robert died on 15 Mar 1962. They both are buried in the Grace Hill/St. Mary's Cemetery, Sioux Co., Iowa.

     h.  Albert Henry "Bert" Klave, born 04 Jun 1907, South Dakota. He died in Oct 1978 and is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton, Sioux Co., Iowa.

     i.  Martha E. Klave, born 14 Mar 1910, Sioux Co., Iowa, died 24 Aug 1920, Sioux Co., Iowa. Martha is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton, Sioux Co., Iowa.

     j.  Esther Marlis Klave, born 23 May 1912, Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa. She married Truman Watkins on 14 Jun 1940, Sioux Co., Iowa. Truman was born on 01 May 1906 in Missouri, the son of Cyrus Walker and Cora Cooper. Esther died on 28 Apr 1992, and Truman died on 23 Jun 1995, both in Hawarden, Sioux Co., Iowa. Esther is buried in the Grace Hill Cemetery, Sioux Co., Iowa. Children: Larry, Doug, and Mary Watkins.

     k.  Arthur F. Klave, born 09 Jul 1914, Sioux Co., Iowa. He died on 24 Jun 1991 in Plymouth Co., Iowa, and is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton, Sioux Co., Iowa.

4.  Charles Carl Klave, born in October 1865 in Germany. He married Tena Dirks. Tena was born in March 1875 in Illinois, the daughter of John and Mary Dirks. Their family was listed in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa Census, the 1925, 1930, and 1940 Le Mars, Plymouth Co., Iowa Census records. Lena died before the 1910 Census, and Charles died after the 1940 Census. Their children were:

     a.  William Richard Klave, born 16 Jun 1896, Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. He died in Nov 1979 and is buried in the Le Mars Memorial Cemetery, Le Mars, Plymouth Co., Iowa. Headstone reads: US Army WWI.

     b.  Emil Wilhelm Klave, born 14 Sep 1898, Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. He married Clara Maggie Schilling on 22 Dec 1920, Plymouth Co., Iowa. Clara was born on 11 Jun 1903 in Iowa, the daughter of Ernest Schilling and Helena Hobbie. Their family was listed in the 1925 thru 1940 Elgin, Plymouth Co., Iowa Census records. Emil died in Nov 1979 and Clara died on 12 Nov 1999, both in Le Mars, Plymouth Co., Iowa. Children: Fern H. and Kenneth Klave.

     c.  Herman William Klave, born 23 Jan 1903, Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. He married Edna M. Eggelbrecht on 03 Dec 1929. Edna was born on 31 Jul 1910 in Grant, Plymouth Co., Iowa, the daughter of Herman Eggelbrecht and Mina Ladwig. Herman died on 28 Apr 1937 in Craig, Sioux Co, Iowa. Edna remarried to Ernst Schuette. Herman and Edna's children were: LaVonne, Donna, Jerlois, and Joyce Marie Klave.

     d.  Edward Rudolph Klave, born 01 Aug 1905, Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa.

     e.  Albert Klave, born 25 Oct 1907, Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa.

     f.  Ida M. Klave, born 04 Feb 1911, Preston Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. Ida died on 15 Jan 1998 in Le Mars, Plymouth Co., Iowa.

5.  Lena Caroline Klave, born ca 1867 in Germany. She married _____ Stanford. Children Lena Stanford.

     John Henry Christian "Henry" Klave born 30 August 1853 in Germany. He married Metta Katherine F. "Katherine" Jansen/Johnson on 18 May 1883 in Plymouth Co., Iowa. Katherine was born on 30 June 1863 in Germany. Their family was listed in the 1900 Union Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa Census, the 1910 Lincoln Twp., Plymouth Co., Census, and the 1920 Banner Twp., Woodbury Co., Iowa Census records.  This family met much tragedy; Typhoid fever, a War casualty, and TB. When the Typhoid fever hit their their home Henry and Katherine died within four days of each other. Below is a newspaper article from the Des Moines Historical Library Microfilm:

Follows Father and Mother to grave within a week

     Wednesday, August 15, Mrs. Henry Klave, living six miles south of Neptune, died at a local hospital. Her husband died on Sunday at the farm home and on Tuesday John Klave, eldest son of the family, died. The deaths of the father and son were due to virulent typhoid fever.
     Florence, the youngest daughter of the family, is in a critical condition in an isolation ward at a local hospital suffering from the same malignant disease. Three sons of the family are ill with typhoid fever, Alexander Klave and (crease in the newspaper photo copy) home farm, where two physicians are in attendance together with two nurses and it is problematic whether their recoveries are assured. One son, Henry Klave, was killed while serving in France during the World War.
     John Klave was the eldest son of the family and was born and raised in this county, where the thirty years of his life were passed.
     The funeral of the father and son was held on Wednesday afternoon. Rev. J. J. Vollmar, of Le Mars, and Rev. J. D. Meyer, of Christ church. Mammen, officiating and the interment made in the Grand township cemetery , where the mother was laid to rest a few days previously.

     Henry died on 19 August 1923, and Katherine died on 15 August 1923.  They both are buried in the Grant Township Cemetery, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. Their children were:

1.  Alexander Klave, born unknown.

2.  Fred Carl William "Fritz" Klave, born on 22 May 1886 near Ireton, Sioux Co., Iowa. He married Rose E. Schmidt on 22 May 1911 in Hinton, Plymouth Co., Iowa. Rosie was born in 1893 in Iowa. Their family was listed in the 1930 and 1940 Le Mars, Plymouth Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa Census records. Fred died on 18 December 1959 in LeMars, Plymouth Co., Iowa, and Rose died in 1984. They both are buried in the LeMars Memorial Cemetery, LeMars, Plymouth Co., Iowa. Children: Garvin F., Lawrence H., Anita B., Vernon H., Iona Ruby, Bernice, Henry Donald, Irene, Marvin, and Joan Klave.

3. Henry R. Klave, born 1888 in Plymouth Co., Iowa.  Henry was killed in action in France during the World War I. 

4.  Augusta N. L. Klave, born 29 July 1889 in Plymouth Co., Iowa. She married Gus May. Gus was born in 1887 in Illinois. Their family was listed in the 1920 and 1930 Union Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. Augusta died in March 1974 in Plymouth Co., Iowa. Children: Herman and Mildred May.

5.  John C. Klave, born 12 December 1893 in Plymouth Co., Iowa. He died on 21 August 1923 from Typhoid fever and is buried in the same grave plot as his father. He is buried in the Grant Township Cemetery, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa.

6.  Margaretta/Margaret Mary Klave, (See 3rd Generation), born 15 November 1894 in Plymouth Co., Iowa.

7.  Otto Eilerd Klave, born 02 April 1892 in Plymouth Co., Iowa. He died in December 1981, and is buried in the Grant Township Cemetery, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa.

8.  Clay Henry Klave, born 12 December 1899 in Plymouth Co., Iowa. He died in May 1981 and is buried in the Grant Township Cemetery, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa.

9.  Adolph W. Klave, born 16 May 1902 in Plymouth Co., Iowa. He died on 30 August 1923 and is buried in the Grant Township Cemetery, Grant Twp., Plymouth Co., Iowa. Below is a newspaper article from the Des Moines Historical Library Microfilm:

     FOURTH VICTIM OF SCOURGE
Other members of Family still battling for life

     Another member of the Klave family which has been devastated the past two weeks by the ravages of typhoid fever, succumbed on Wednesday to the disease. This is the fourth death in the family since August 15 and members of the family are still suffering from illness and are not out of danger.
The mother, Mrs. Henry Klave, died of Bright's disease at a local hospital here on August 15. The father Henry Klave, died at his farm, six miles south of Neptune, on August 19, and the eldest son, John died on August 21. He and his father were buried together.
     Adolph Klave died on Wednesday from typhoid fever, after fighting the disease for some weeks. His death took place at the farm where two brothers are battling for life stricken with the same malady. A sister, Florence, a young woman, is in an isolation ward at a hospital here, as are three children of Fred Klave, a brother, who resides in this city.
     Adolph Klave was twenty-one years old in June. He had lived all his life in this county and helped his parents farm. He is survived by three brothers and three sisters, Fred, Otto and Klay Klave, Mrs. Gus Mai, and Florence Klave of this vicinity, and Mrs. John Parks, of Leeds.
     The funeral services were held yesterday at Grant township cemetery, Rev. J. D. Meyer, officiating.

10.  Florence C. Klave, born 30 July 1904 in Plymouth Co., Iowa.  She married Arthur F. Bock.  Florence died on 22 November 1991 and Arthur died on 17 June 1981.  I will not name the names of their children.

     Margaretta/Margaret Mary Klave born on 15 November 1894 in Plymouth Co., Iowa. She married John Franklin Parks on 27 October 1917 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa. John was born on 09 June 1895 in Woodbury Co., Iowa, the son of Phillip Charles Parks and Katherine Elizabeth "Katie" Dunn.  John owned a farm in Leeds, Woodbury Co., Iowa.  Margaret died in the Cherokee State Hospital on 17 May 1931 from pulmonary tuberculosis and is buried there. Children:

1. Catherine Hazel Parks, born 14 July 1918 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa. She married Ralph Clark. Catherine died on 02 February 1973, and is buried in the Logan Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa.

2. Camilla Izetta Parks, (See my Parks Lineage for the rest of Camilla's information), born 21 July 1920 in Sioux City, Woodbury Co., Iowa.
