Welcome to my Staley Genealogy Page.  This is my wife Vickie's line.   I have worked on this line for many years now. Most all of the information herein on the lower lines is from the Boone Co., Courthouse records, Census records, Tax Poll records, and Headstone information. I believe the information below is correct, but If you find any discrepancies, please email me.  Special thanks to Terry Reid who's help has been invaluable on most of these upper lines, and to Robert Staley, and Katherine Staley for all of their wonderful help. This site is dedicated to my wonderful wife Vickie, and my children.  Enjoy your stay.

Please remember each bit of information found here, or elsewhere, must be researched and proven by weight of evidence, via you, the researcher.

Descendants of John Staley

*****************1st Generation*****************

I have had a very hard time with this upper line of Staley's.  There were so many Staley's with the same given name in the same area.  I am starting this line of with Jacob Staley, who I have come to believe is the father of my John.  This is not completely proven, but I am just going by locality and census records.

Jacob Staley, born ca 1760.  Could this be Jacob son of Jacob and Catherine Staley?  Jacob married Elizabeth _____.   Jacob was listed in the 1795-1799 Botetourt Co., Virginia Tax Records.  This Jacob died ca 1800/1801 as Elizabeth was listed as a widow in the 1801 Botetourt Co., Virginia Tax Records (Thank you Katherine for the Tax information).   Elizabeth was not listed after the 1801 information.  In the 1810 Botetourt Co., Virginia Census records the was also an Andrew Staley that may possibly be one more child of his.  Also near these men was another Peter Staley who may be his brother.  Note:  The only child that seems to be proven for Jacob is Elizabeth.  We have Stephen and Margaret connected by Stephen's children).  Below are the children that I believe to be Jacob's children, again not proven:

1. Peter Staley, b: 09 Mar 1779, probably York Co., Pennsylvania.  He married Hannah Level on 27 Sept. 1809 in Botetourt Co., Virginia.  He was listed in the 1798-1810 Botetourt Co., Virginia Tax Lists.  Peter was listed in the 1810 Botetourt Co., Pennsylvania Census records-1 male 26-45, and 1 female 26-45.  He was then listed in the 1820 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census records, near his brother Jacob-1 male 45+, 1 female 45+, the 1830 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census records-1 male 40-50, 1 female 40-50, the 1840 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census records-1 male 60-70, 1 female 60-70, living with his nephew Joseph Staley in the 1850 Mifflin, Pike Co., Ohio Census records, and finally in the 1860 Liberty Twp., Highland Co., Ohio Community Infirmary aged 89.

2. Jacob Staley, b: 16 Nov 1780, Lower  Chanceford Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania (Luthern Church, Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA, sent to me by Katherine).  He married Drusilla McCoy on 07 October 1804 in Botetourt Co., Virginia.  Drusilla was born ca 1784 in Maryland, the daughter of Thomas McCoy.  Jacob was listed in the 1810 Botetourt Co., Virginia Census records, along with two Peter's, and an Andrew Staley who at least two of them may also be his brothers.

      a.  Margaret Staley, b: ca 1810 in VA.  She married Asa West on 08 Jul 1824 in Pike Co., OH.  Asa was born on 21 Jan 1793 in Virginia, the son of Benjamin West and Rebecca Cannifax.  They were listed in the 1850, 1860, 1870 Perry Twp., Pike Co., OH Census records.  Children:  Benjamin, Eliza J., Thomas, Rebecca and Elijah M. West.

      b.  Joseph Staley, b: ca 1814 in VA.  He married Malinda Dutton on 11 September 1838 in Highland Co., OH.  Malinda was born ca 1818 in OH, the daughter of James Dutton and Elizabeth West.  They lived in Mifflin Twp., Pike Co., OH.  Joseph died on 27 May 1873, and Malinda died in 1886.  They both are buried in the Westwood Cemetery, Mifflin, Pike Co., OH.  Children:  Benjamin, William, James Alowys, Mary Elizabeth, Alice, and Virginia A. Staley.   His uncle Peter lived with him for some time in Mifflin.

      c.  William Staley, b: ca 1820 in OH.  He married Julia Ann Snider on 27 Feb 1848.  Julia was born ca 1830 in OH.  Their family was listed in the 1860 Polk Twp., Marion Co., Iowa Census, the 1870 Union Twp., Marion Co., IA Census, and the 1880 Polk, Marion Co., IA Census records.  Children:  J.A., Mary M., Olive, Joseph D., Catherine A., William, John, and Amos Staley.

      d.  Jacob Staley, b: ca 1821 in OH.   He married Letitia Jane Mattox.  Letitia was born ca 1824 in OH, the daughter of Nathan Mattox and Elizabeth Jackson.  Their family was listed in the 1850 Brush Creek, Highland Co., OH Census, the 1860 and 1870 Polk Twp., Marion Co., IA Census records.  Children:  Nathan, Drusilla, John W., Thomas, Wesley, Marion, J., and J. W. Staley.

Edmiston.  Their family was listed in the 1880 Des Moines Twp., Polk Co., IA Census records. Their family migrated to Oklahoma. Asa died ca 1900. Children:  C., Zuenetta, Mary, George, Margaret, Samuel, Christian, and Ulysses Grant Staley.  Was Asa really Samuel Asa?  There was a Samuel E. listed with Thomas in Ohio.  I believe this was him.

      f.  Thomas Staley, b: ca 1824 in OH.   He married Sarah Holton on 19 Mar 1846 in Pike Co., Ohio (Thank you Katherine).  Sarah was born ca 1830 in OH.  Their family was listed in the 1860, and 1870 Mifflin, Pike Co., OH Census records.  Children:  Mary A., Maria, Margaret J., Jacob A., Amy Isabell, Hymen M., Melinda A., William J., and Thomas E. Staley.

      g.  Phillip Staley, b: ca 1830 in OH.  He married Sarah _____.  Sarah was born ca 1837 in Ohio.  Their family was listed in the 1860 Mifflin, Pike Co., OH Census, and the 1880 Greenfield, Highland Co., OH Census records.  Children:  Mary Isabelle, Ella, William, Annie and Jesse Staley.

3. Stephen Staley, b: 03 May 1781, Lower  Chanceford Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania (Thank you Robert).  He married Elizabeth "Betsey" Deardorf on 05 Oct 1809 in Botetourt Co., Virginia.  Elizabeth was born ca 1788 in VA.   He was listed in the 1807-1810 Botetourt Co., Virginia Tax Records (Thank you Katherine).  Stephen died ca 1815  and had made his brother in law Thomas Holton Administrator of his Estate, and was appointed guardianship of Stephen and Elizabeth's children (connection to Margaret).  Elizabeth was listed in the 1820 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census records widowed with her children.  She was listed as being 18 to 26 year old, and also 5 doors down from Jacob Deartduff (Deardorf), who I believe is her brother.  She married second to Stephen's brother, John Staley.  See below for more information.  Stephen and Elizabeth's children were:

      a.  Catherine Staley, b: ca 1810 in VA.  She married David Anderson.

      b.  Jacob Staley, b: ca 1811 in VA.  He married Eliza Kisling.

      c.  Elizabeth Staley, b: 03 August 1813 in VA.  She married Benjamin Noland.  Benjamin was born 10 August 1814 in Ohio.  Their family migrated to Dallas Co., IA where they were listed in the 1860 Dallas Co., IA Census Records.  Their children were:  Nathaniel, Hannah, Daniel, Joseph, John, Mary Jane, Melinda, Elizabeth, and Rhiley Ann Noland.

      d.  Stephen Staley, b: ca 1815 in Virgina.

3. Margaret Staley, b: 07 Dec 1784, Lower  Chanceford Twp., York Co., Pennsylvania.   (Luthern Church, Chanceford Twp., York Co., PA, sent to me by Katherine).  She married Thomas M. Holton.  Thomas was born ca 1782 in Botetourt Co., VA, and died ca 1819/20 in Pike Co., OH.  Margaret lived in Pike Co., Ohio where she was listed in the 1820, 1830,1840, and 1850 Mifflin, Pike Co., Ohio Census records.  Thomas was named Guardian of Margaret's brothers Stephen's children (connecting Margaret to Stephen).  This according to a lawsuit against his Estate in 1820.  Margaret and Thomas' children were (info on children from Diane Nichols' post in GenForum):

      a.  James Holton, b: 1803, VA

      bThomas Holton, b: 1806, VA

      cJacob Holton, b 1810, VA

      dElizabeth Holton, b: 1811, VA

      eSamuel Holton, b: 1812

      f.  John Holton, b: 1816, VA

      gPeter Holton, b: Unknown, VA

      hSusan Holton, b: 1818, VA

      iIsaac Holton, b: 1819

4. Sarah Staley, b: ca 1788 in Virginia.  Could this be the Sarah who married Jacob Dierdorf/Deardorf on 26 April 1808 in Botetourt Co., Virginia?  Two Staley's married two Deardorf's?  And, is this the Jacob who lived by Elizabeth "Deardorf" Staley in the 1820 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census, and next door to John and Elizabeth "Deardorf" Staley in the 1830 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census?  I think he was.  There was another Jacob Deardorf who lived in Preble Co., Ohio.  That Jacob married Elizabeth Lash/Lesh in 1811.  His bio sent to me from Robert Staley states that he came to Preble Co., Ohio when he was a young man from Botetourt Co., Virginia.  This clearly shows that one man could not have been in two places at the same time.

5.  John Staley, (See 2nd Generation), b: ca 1792 in Virginia.

6. Elizabeth Staley, b:  b: ca 1793 in Virginia.  She married George Nace on 12 Oct 1814 in Botetourt Co., Virginia (marriage license states father as Jacob Staley deceased-Thank you Katherine).  This connects Elizabeth to Jacob Sr.  George was born 23 October 1790 in Frederick Co., Maryland, the son of Henry and Magdaline Nace.  Their family was listed in the 1820 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census records by Jacob, and Peter Staley, the 1840, 1850, and the 1860 Mifflin Twp., Pike Co., Ohio Census records.  George died ca 1872 Children: John, Peter, Catherine, Margaret, Dolly, and Jacob Nace.

*****************2nd Generation*****************

John Staley was born ca 1792 in Virginia.  I cannot find John listed in the 1820 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census records.  Perhaps he was still in Virginia, or in Ohio but in another township, or living with another relative?  He married Elizabeth Deardorf Staley on 17 Jan 1823 in Highland Co., Ohio.  Elizabeth was born ca 1788 in Virginia.  She was married first to John's possible brother Stephen Staley.  Their family was listed together in the 1830 Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census records.  That 1830 Census record lists the following children for both John and Elizabeth's children: 1 male under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 10-15, for a total at that time of 8 children, 9 counting Mary Ann born 1832.  Their family was also listed in the Brush Creek, Highland Co., Ohio Census records.  John was listed in the Personal Property Tax Lists of Highland Co., Ohio in 1836-1847 in Brush Creek, and 1848-1853 in Marshall Twp., Highland Co., Ohio.  Their family migrated to Boone Co., Iowa from Highland Co., Ohio as many people of their time had done during the western migration period, and were listed in the 1860 Cass Twp., Boone Co., Iowa Census records. John was listed as a widower in the 1870 Marcy Twp., Boone Co., Iowa Census records living with his son-in-law and daughter Jacob and Mary Ann Miller. John died on 11 January 1871 (headstone reads aged 79 years), and Elizabeth died on 20 Nov 1868 (headstone reads aged 80 years).  They both are buried in the Sparks Cemetery, Marcy Twp., Boone Co., Iowa.  For Elizabeth's children from her first marriage, see Stephen Staley above.  John and Elizabeth's children together were (we are missing one female child):
