Welcome to my Thomas Lineage Page. I have been working on this line for a few years now. I have received various informative data from many new found cousins, and on my last two trips to North Carolina. I would like to thank you all. My Thomas lines as far as I can tell come from Rutherford Co., North Carolina. I believe the information below is correct, but if you find any discrepancies or if you would like to add to the lineage, please email me.   I would like to thank Jan Plemmons, Rich Nallenweg, Dan Slagle, Randall Davis, Shirley Treadway and so many others for their wonderful contributions to this site.   I hope you find the information helpful to you. Thank you for dropping by. Enjoy.

Please remember each bit of information found here, or elsewhere, must be researched and proved or disproved by weight of evidence by you, the researcher.

Descendants of Peter Thomas

*****************1st Generation*****************

Peter Thomas was born ca 1799-1808 in North Carolina. The 1850 Buncombe Co., North Carolina Census states that Peter was born in North Carolina and he was 51 years of age, the 1860, Madison Co., North Carolina Census, states he was born in South Carolina, and was 52 years of age. The 1880 Marshall, Madison Co., North Carolina Census states that he was born in North Carolina and was 75 years of age. Peter married Martha Patsey Stice, on 20 November 1820 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina. Patsey was born ca 1799-1805 in Rutherford Co., North Carolina, the daughter of Phillip (A.?) Stice and Mary Haynes. Peter and Patsey were listed in the 1880 Marshall, Madison Co., North Carolina Census, living with J. M. and Catherine S. Ramsey. I have not been able to find their final resting place, however, in one of the Cemeteries of Madison Co., North Carolina books, written by Jan C. Plemmons, state that there was an old abandoned cemetery that the Thomas family used to use to bury their kin in. This cemetery is called Grassy Creek Hilltop Cemetery in Madison Co., North Carolina. There are no headstones there, but their son Noah is buried there. I am therefore thinking that this may be their resting place. Martha and Peter's children were:

1.  Phillip Thomas, born: ca 1824, North Carolina. Phillip Thomas married twice. He married first to Matilda Crane on 24 January 1852 in Madison Co., North Carolina (Madison Co., North Carolina Marriage Records). Matilda was born in 1842 in Buncombe Co., North Carolina, the daughter of Jesse Crane and Susan Bird/Byrd. Phillip resided in Madison County where he enlisted on January 1, 1863, for the war. He was in Co. C of the 64th North Carolina Confederate Infantry. He mustered in as a Private. Reported present through June 30, 1863. Promoted to Corporal prior to September 6, 1863, when he was captured at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Sent to Louisville, Kentucky. Transferred to Camp Douglas, Chicago Illinois, where he arrived on Sept. 26, 1863. Released at Camp Douglas on June 16, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance. Matilda died in 1866. Their children were:

He married Celia "Sealy" _____, b: 1848, North Carolina. Note: On James' Death Certificate, it stated that he was born in 1850, however his parents did not marry until 1852, and in 1850, Phillip was still living at home. Children: Catherine, Matilda, Maggie B., Jesse, Etter, Willis, Moody, Dillard, Isaac and Floyd Thomas.

     e. Green R. "Tooney" Thomas, born: 21 Mar 1866, Madison Co., North Carolina. He married Mary Jane "Mollie" Kuykendall on 04 Mar 1888 in Greene Co., Tennessee. Mollie was born on 20 Aug 1873 in Tennessee, the daughter of George Washington and Philomena Kuykendall.      Phillip married second to Vina Landers on 03 Sep 1866 in Madsion Co., North Carolina. According to the 1880 Shelton Laurel Census, Phillip was 24 years her senior. Vina was born in 1852 in North Carolina, according to that census, however there was a Viannah Landers, the daughter of John and Viannah Landers, born ca 1849. I believe they are one in the same. Their children were:

      a. Sarah Elizabeth "Elizabeth" Thomas, born: 15 October 1852 in North Carolina. Note the difference in the marriage date of her parents and her birth date. According to her age of 83 years at death, listed in the Madison Co., North Carolina Death Libers, she would have been born in 1851, from the census records I figure she was more likely born around 1855. Either one of her parents were previously married or her birth date is wrong. Both John and Mary are listed as her parents on her death certificate. Elizabeth married Hezekiah Jackson Treadway on 20 October 1872 in Madison Co., North Carolina. Hezekiah known as Jackson was born on 29 March 1852 in Buncombe Co., North Carolina, the son of Aaron Treadway and Nancy Priscilla Davis. Elizabeth died on 24 Feb 1934, she was killed by a passenger train. The story told to me is that Sarah was blind. She used to walk the R.R. tracks to her daughter's house. When she would feel a train coming she would step off the tracks and squat beside them until the train passed. Sadly at the time of her death she did not move far enough away from the tracks and was struck by the steps of the train. Jackson died on 21 August 1943. Both Elizabeth and Jackson are buried in the Thomas Cemetery, Madison Co., North Carolina.
