Sarah F. Rodgers and William Odell Worsham (Compliments of Anna O'Quinn Richter)

**********  6th Generation  **********

    John Worsham, born ca 1774 in Montgomery Co., Virginia.  He married Martha "Patsy" Worsham on 01 March 1801.  Martha was born in 1781 in Pittslyvania Co., Virginia, the daughter of Joshua Worsham, John's Uncle.  Their family was listed in the 1812 Early Tennessee Tax Lists for Sullivan Co., the 1830 Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census records, pg. 328 (John Washam) 1 male under 5, 2 males 20-30, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 50-60. Note: There was also a Jonathan Wassum listed 2 households under John. Could this be another son, or the son of William Washam and Hannah Smith. John was listed in the 1837 Tax List for Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Their family migrated to Carroll Co., Missouri after the 1837 Tax Listing.  Their family was then listed in 1840 Chariton Co., Missouri Census records, pg. 320 (John Warsham) 1 male 5-10, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 60-70, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female15-20, 1 female 50-60. Both John and Patsy died in Carroll Co., Missouri.

1. Jefferson Washam/Worsham, (See 7th Generation), born ca 1802 in Washington Co., Virginia.

2. Robert Worsham, born ca 1803 in Washington Co., Virginia.  He married Catherine _____.  Catherine was born ca 1816.  Their family was listed in the 1850 Prairie Twp., Chariton Co., Missouri Census records, page 168a. Robert died in 1852 in Chariton Co., Missouri. Children: John, Jane, Robert, and James Worsham.

3. William T. Worsham, born ca 1812 in Washington Co., Virginia.  He married Mary Worsham.  Mary was born ca 1815 in Washington Co., Tennessee. Their family was listed in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Washington Co., Tennessee Census records. William died ion 18 Dec1871 in Saltville, Washington Co., Virginia. Children: Martha Ellen, Nancy, and Robert Franklin Worsham.

4. Orlander Worsham, born 15 March 1814 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He married Nancy Lane on 05 June 1846 in Chariton Co., Missouri.  Nancy was born ca 1818 in Kentucky. Orlander died on 10 June 1853. Nancy was listed in the 1860 Chariton Co., Missouri Census records with her family. They both are buried in the Corinth Cemetery, Musselfork Twp., Chariton Co., Missouri. Their children were: John W., Cynthia A., Frances E., and Mary J. Worsham.

     Jefferson Washam/Worsham, born ca 1802 in Washington Co., Virginia.  He married Rebecca Elkins.  Rebecca was born ca 1804 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, the daughter of Larkin Elkins and Catherine Odell. Their family was listed in the 1830 Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census records, pg. 328: (Jefferson Washhum) 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-30, 2 females under 5, and 1 female 20-30.  Jefferson was listed in the 1837 Tax List for Bristol, Sullivan Co., Tennessee.  Their family was also listed in the 1840 Chariton Co., Missouri Census records, pg. 314: (Jefferson Warshum) 2 males under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 30-40, 1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 10-15, and 1 female 30-40.  Jefferson died sometime after 1840, as he was not listed in the 1850 Census records.  Rebecca and her family were listed in the 1850 Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census records, pg. 42, household 431 (Rebecka Washam), the 1860 River Bend Forge PO, Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census (Rebecca Washam), pg. 29, household 1028, and the 1870 Goodson Twp., Washington Co., Virginia Census, pg. 93 (Rebecca Worhsam), household 195, and the 1880 Goodson Twp., Washington Co., Virginia Census records, pg. 128 living with David B. and Dora Millard. In that census Rebecca was listed as Grandmother, so therefore, Dora is her granddaughter as David B. is the son of Rebecca's sister Martha, making her Davids Aunt. It appears we have a missing child for Jefferson and Rebecca, and it seems to be a female. Rebecca died ca 1887 in Washington Co., Virginia. Their children were:

1.  Nancy A. Worsham, born ca 1828 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Going by the 1850 Census records where Nancy was married to William Carter, I followed this family to Texas. I am not sure if this is our Nancy or not, so please use your own judgement. Nancy married William E. D. Carter on 08 Sep 1850 in Stewart Co., Tennessee. William was born on 05 Dec 1828 in Tennessee. Their family migrated to Missouri where they were listed in the 1870 and 1880 Alcorn Co., Mississippi Census, and lastly to the 1900 Fannin Co., Texas Census records. Nancy died on 20 Jun 1903, and William died on 28 Dec 1904. They both are buried in the Spring Creek Cemetery, Fannin Co., Texas. Children: Alice, W. L. A., Green Berry Hampton, and Susan Carter.

2. Martha M. Worsham, born ca 1829 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.

3. Washington Worthington "Wat" Worsham, born ca 1830 in Madison Co., Tennessee.  He married twice. He married first to Elizabeth Banning on 17 Feb 1852 in Linn Co., Missouri. Elizabeth was born in 1834 in Illinois. His family was listed in the 1860 Clark, Chariton Co., Missouri Census, pg. 295, household 902. He was listed next in the 1870 Musselfork, Chariton Co., Missouri Census, pg. 226b, household 75, Children: Mary E., Martha A., John W., James A., Lewis Edward, Nancy Ellen, and Robert Lee Worsham. Wat married second to Mary Elizabeth McCullum on 23 March 1877 in Chariton Co., Missouri.  Mary was born ca 1857 in Missouri. Their family was listed in the 1880 Mussel Fork, Chariton Co., Missouri Census, pg. 529, household 110. Children: Sadie Worsham. Wat died on 13 Mar 1887 in Mussel Fork, Chariton Co., Missouri.

4. William Odell Worsham, (See 8th Generation), born 09 October 1833 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.

5. Robert Lee S. Washam, born ca 1835 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He married twice. He married first to Catherine Bushong ca 1853 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.  Catherine was born ca 1837 in Tennessee. Their family was living with Robert's mother in the 1860 Census records. Children: Martha M. Washam. Robert married second to Rebecca E. _____, born ca 1832 in Tennessee. Rebecca and her children were listed in the 1880 Ellis Co., Texas Census records. Children: Mary Ella, Nancy E. "Nannie", Laura A., and William Washam. Robert died on 15 Dec 1877, and is buried in the Rehobath Cemetery, Greene Co., Tennessee.

6. Orlando "Leander" Worsham, born ca 1838 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.  He married Martha W. Phipps on 28 November 1865 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.  Martha was born ca 1844 in Tennessee, the daughter of Alfred and Mary Phipps. Their family was listed in the 1870 and 1880, Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census records. Their children were:  Chalres, Alexander, Mary Esther, Isa Ann, Frank, Edward, and Mattie Worsham.

7. Thomas Jefferson Washam, born on 04 April 1840 in Jonesboro, Washington Co., Tennessee.  He married from what I can tell 3 times. He married first to Margaret E. _____. Margaret was born ca 1842 in Virginia. Children: William F. Washam. He married second to Sarah _____.  Sarah was born ca 1838 in Tennessee. Children: Francis Catherine, David J., Rebecca M., and Robert Lee Washam. He married third to Lucinda King on 12 November 1911 in Pesia, Hawkins Co., Tennessee.  Lucinda was born ca 1854.

    William Odell Worsham, born 09 October 1833 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.  He married Sarah F. Cornelia Rodgers on 02 Jul 1854 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. Sarah was born on 22 June 1840 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, the daughter of Nicholas Rodgers and Elizabeth Lewis.  William and his family were listed in the 1860 Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census records, pg. 142, household 973, the 1870 Bristol PO, Sullivan Co., Tennessee Census records, pg. 382, household 136, and the 1880 Spring Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina Census records, pg. 125C.  William was a Wagon Maker, and a Mechanic.

      Below is a copy of a letter written by Sarah, dated 28 November 1910, which Gary Gaillard sent to me (Thank you Gary for your wonderful information you have donated to this line, not to forget to mention Anna O'Quinn Richter as well).  I thought I would share it with everyone:

Bluff, North Carolina, November 28, 1910, To Mrs. W. C. Henley (Walter),

     Dear Daughter I will answer your kind and welcome letter. Was glad to get it I begain to think something was bad the mater. I am y____ sorrow you are not well. Hope this may find you all rite. We use all so is to go but not very well and it is raining so hard here this morning and I fear it is going to turn cold, looks very much like it last night was like a sumer night, thunder and the wind blowd and this morning is a change and that will give all colds, we have lots of sickness in here now, pneumonia, fever and Togripp? and bad colds I have had. Letters from all of the children but Willie John writes he is doing lots better than he did at Hot Springs. Said him and Case got work every day that is better. T. E (Thomas Ezekial) family was well. I am going to write him how they are neglecting writing us. I think it very low down of him. They have moved from where he lived if dont write you soon I will give you his address. He had the wrong name he said in his letter. Eva had writen him. I will correct him in his mistake. That will be rite, dont you think. So Terrells are all well. Adie and Alice went to see Granny Peggey yesterday. She is very poorly Adie said. She did not think she could be here long they are all working in their tobacco today. Have rite nice tobacco, but I dont think it will bring very much. Jeffie (Jefferson) was here Saturday, said all had bad colds and has had a very bad cold. I feel so uneasy he dose expose himself so. Have you gave out moving to the farm, but one can not do much this time of year and farm as well work in the mill. Well Walter you are not here to get wood duck and Duward is out saving wood for it is going to snow. George halled us a good load of stove wood Saturday that will ceep me out of the woods a week or so. Get so every time I get in the woods I get ____ so I have got to be afraid of the woods tis so slick with leaves I cant stand up. Will write soon.

Sarah Worsham

     William died on 09 November 1913, and Sarah died on 19 January 1929 in Charleston, Charleston Co., South Carolina.  They both are buried in the Bluff Cemetery, Hot Springs, Madison Co., North Carolina. William and Sarah's children were:

1. Daniel S. Worsham, born 03 March 1856 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He married three times. He married first to Leathy C. Brooks. Leathy was born ca. 1860 in Madison Co., North Carolina, the daughter of Terrell Brooks and Francis Lusk. Children: Theodosia "Dosha" Worsham. Robert married second to Laura Rezine "Lura" Brooks on 13 August 1880 in Madison Co., North Carolina.  Lurie was born on 15 December 1860 in Madison Co., North Carolina, the daughter of Terrell Brooks and Francis Lusk. Their family was listed in the 1880 and 1900 Spring Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina Census records. Lura died on 02 Oct 1962, and is buried in the Hoopers Creek Cemetery, Hendersonville, Henderson Co., North Carolina. Children: William Joseph, David Larkin R., Laura R., and Belva Worsham. Daniel married lastly to Lucy James. Lucy was born in 1871 in South Carolina, the daughter of James James. Daniel and Lucy were listed in the 1920 Spartanburg, Spartanburg Co., South Carolina Census records. Daniel died on 21 Mar 1923 in Spartanburg Co., South Carolina.

2. Martha Ann Elizabeh Worsham, (See 9th Generation), born 05 April 1857 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.

3. Mary Caldona Worsham, born 15 Nov 1861 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. She married twice. She married first to James Jackson. James was born ca 1857 in North Carolina. Their family was listed in the 1880 Shelton Laurel, Madison Co., North Carolina Census. Children: William H., and Addie J. Jackson. Mary married second to Stephen Franklin. Stephen was born 12 May 1856 in North Carolina, the son of John and Elizabeth Franklin. Their family was listed in the 1900 Shelton Laurel, Madison Co., North Carolina Census, and the 1910 Unicoi Co., Tennessee Census records. Stephen died on 18 Jul 1919 in Waynesville, Haywood Co., North Carolina, and Mary died on 24 My 1939 in Greene Co., Tennessee, and is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery, Greene Co., Tennessee. Children: Opal, Jefferson C., Ida B., and Napolean Bonapart "Bonie" Franklin.

4. Reuben S. Worsham, born ca 1861 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.  He married B. F. Blair. Reuben died in California.

5. Nancy Catherine Worsham, born and died ca 1862 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee.

6. Rosanna Lee "Rosa" Worsham, born 29 July 1864 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. She married George Washington Kelley on 13 February 1880 in Greene Co., Tennessee.  George was born on 07 January 1857 in Kelley's Gap, Greene Co., Tennessee, the son of Jacob Kelley and Elizabeth Jennings. Their family was listed in the 1880 and 1900 Greene Co., Tennessee Census. Rosanna died on 26 June 1900. George and his family were listed in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Greene Co., Tennessee Ceneus records. George died on 06 Dec 1936. Both Rosa and George are buried in the Harrison Cemetery, Greene Co., Tennessee. Children: Sarah Elizabeth, Malinda A., Oscar, James H., Bessie, Georgiana J., Vivian, and Alice Cordelia Kelley.

7. Ellen Adaline "Addie" Worsham, born 11 Oct 1866 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. She married Terrell Anderson Brooks. Terrell was born in May 1867 in North Carolina, the son of Terrell Brooks and Frances Lusk. Their family was listed in the 1900 and 1910 Spring Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina Census, the 1920 Spartanburg, Spartanburg Co., South Carolina Census, and the 1930 Spring Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina Census. Addie was listed in the 1940 Spring Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina Census records. Children: David Odell, George L., Ica "Icey", Etna L., and Alice C. Brooks.

8. William Edward "Willie" Worsham, born 12 Jun 1868 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He married Mattie A. Scruggs on 06 March 1890 in Madison Co., North Carolina.  Mattie was born 07 Sep 1874 in Knox Co., Tennessee, the daughter of George Scrugss and Margaret Carver. Willie died on 17 Dec 1915, and Mattie died on 08 Mar 1940, both in Knox Co., Tennessee. They both are buried in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Powell, Knox Co., Tennessee. Children: William, Mary Elizabeth, Sadie E., Charles C., Raymond C., Frank, Helen, and Elva Worsham.

9. Thomas Ezekial Worsham, born 14 May 1870 in Sullivan Co., Tennessee. He married Lillie B. Jones. Lillie was born on 09 Dec 1879 in Texas, the daughter of Thomas and Harriet Jones. Their family was listed in the 1900 Washington Co., Texas Census, the 1910 El Paso Co., Texas Census, the 1920 Los Angeles Co., California Census, and Thomas was listed in the 1930 San Bernardino, San Bernardino Co., California Census records. Thomas died on 11 Sep 1943, and Lillie died on 18 Jun 1960, both in Los Angeles Co., California. Children: Zella F., Cecil R., Melba M., and Don E. Worsham.

10. Sarah Jane Worsham, born 14 Mar 1871 in Virginia. She married Sanders Baxter on 24 Sep 1887 in Cocke Co., Tennessee. Sanders was born on 16 Aug 1862 in Tennessee. Their family was listed in the 1900 and 1910 Clay Co., Texas Census, the 1920 Eastland Co., Texas Census records. Sally died on 31 Jul 1937, and Sanders died on 28 Feb 1941. They both are buried in the Shannon Cemetery, Shannon, Clay Co., Texas. Children: Rosie E., William A. Sanders, Maude M., Holloway, Thomas Seldon, John O., and Edna Baxter.

11. Stephen Nicholas U.  Worsham, born 17December 1875 in Madison Co., North Carolina. He married Tolitha Caroline Ward on 19 May 1899 in Spring Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina. Tolitha was born on 05 December 1878 in Madison Co., North Carolina. Their family was listed in the 1900 Spring Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina Census, the 1910 and 1920 Hot Springs, Madison Co., North Carolina Census records. Stephen died on 29 Mar 1943 in Hickory, Catawba Co., North Carolina, and Tolitha died on 18 Jan 1943 in Burke Co., North Carolina. Children: Vestie Marie, Maynard A., Kate, Darris U., Charles, Columbus, Earl H., Vern, Edna Muriel, and Dennis C. Worsham.

12. Elizabeth Rebecca/Helena Mae Worsham, born 30 July 1877 in Bluff, Madison Co., North Carolina. Her given name was Elizabeth Rebecca, then in another census it changed to Rebecca E., then another Rebecca H., and finally to Helena Mae. She married James Sloan Fendley. James was born in 1885.  Helena died on 19 November 1953 and is buried in the Riverview Memorial Park Cemetery, Charlston, Charleston Co., South Carolina. James died in 1980.

13. Eva Erness Worsham, born 09 March 1879 in Madison Co., North Caroina. She was partners with Vance Russell. Eva died on 27 December 1956, and is buried in the Riverview Memorial Park Cemetery, Charleston, Charleston Co., South Carolina.  Their children were: Durward B. "Dewey", Deniece, and Dora Mae Worsham.

14. Robert Pemberton Worsham, born 24 Mar 1882 in Madison Co., North Carolina. He married Laura Jane Kerley on 14 March 1901 in Madison Co., North Carolina. Laura was born on 13 Apr 1884 in Madison Co., North Carolina, the daughter of John Kerley and Adeline Moore. Robert was killed by a piece from a threshing machine. He died in 1908 and is buried in the Bluff Cemetery, Madison Co., North Carolina. Children: Violet May, Sarah Cornelia, and Howard Worsham. Laura married second to Robert Henry Waldrop.

15. Jefferson W. Worsham, born on 02 Jul 1884 in Madison Co., North Carolina.  He married Etella Mae "Stella" Brooks. Stella was born ion 15 Feb 1887 in Hot Springs, Madison Co., North Carolina, the daughter of Mark Earnen Brooks and Sarah Margaret Stanton. Their family was listed in the 1920 Hot Springs, Madison Co., North Carolina Census, and the 1930 Laurel, Madison Co., North Carolina Census records. Jefferson died on 22 Jul 1941, and Stella died on 20 Oct 1971. They both are buried in the Murphy's Chapel Cemetery, McDowell Co., North Carolina. Children: Ada Mildred, Edna Julia, Robbie Rebecca, William Ervin, Henry Ruble, Stella Rose, Verge, Virgie, Margaret, Nannie Van, Angie Lee, and John Dewey Worsham.
