A Very Brady Sequel

(out of 5)

Uh oh! Here we go again, it looks like a syndicated movie of the syndicated shows! Don't worry, I was a bit scared that it wasn't going to be as funny as the first one, but it was actually a big improvement compared to the first one. The movie's plot was more interesting, especially since Carol's ex-husband comes back. Only no one knows he is really a thief! When he kidnaps the naive Carol (Shelley Long), the family is off to Hawaii for her rescue!

There were so many "inside jokes"in this movie, that only a TRUE Brady fan would have appreciated. I, of course probably watched all the syndicated episodes ten times, so I was pretty engrossed in the content. Okay, a lot. I hate how many people say "it sucked" because they didn't understand half of it!

I have to admit, The relationship between Greg and Marcia was a bit over the boundaries--even though they DID have a crushes on each other, a long time ago, outside the set. The kiss they shared stirred up a lot of anger from some people, but c'mon! Didn't it even occur to you that maybe Greg and Marcia had a "thing" for each other?

I feel so sorry for Jan. The poor girl was the butt of practically all the movie's jokes! It is a good thing that she finally did meet her "George Glass." I also noticed that during an auction scene with guest star, Zsa Zsa Gabore, the names Eve Plumb (Jan), Maureen Mcormick (Marcia) and Susan Olsen (Cindy) were mentioned as the auction's "sponsors." I guess since the old clan couldn't make guest star appearances, they had their names thrown around instead. Very clever.

Other old sitcoms were incorporated into the plot as well--such was "Gilligan's Island" and "I Dream of Genie." This frightened me a bit. There were hints of ANOTHER Brady sequel in the making, when the star of "Genie" made her mysterious appearance and stated that she was back to claim Mike Brady. But that can't happen... the Brady clan ran out of songs to lip synch to!

I was VERY upset when the Bradys did their lip synching routine. In the first Brady movie, they used the original master recordings. However, in this sequel, they replaced the original voices with a cheap imitation group!

The Brady Bunch cartoon also worked its way into this comedy, and it was odd how it did. When Carol's "ex-husband" eats "magic" mushrooms, he starts hallucinating (other wise known as "tripping") that he is inside a cartoon fairy world with the Brady Kids.

There is no doubt about it. The Brady Bunch may not have been the most popular show in the 70s, but it will always live with us in a little world called syndication. The idea of the first and second movie was a great idea, and it honored a hilarious family. Name any other family who would do the Charleston in the living room on a Friday night! Or how about naming someone who does gunny-sack races with their families on a weekly basis! The basketball scene ("Mom always said not to play ball in the house.") was one of the most memorable episodes, that I will never forget.

Something about this movie made me feel cheery, and made me realize that I not only love watching the sitcoms, but I actually realize that I am obsessed with Jan's glasses, and Greg's "groovy" shades, and Cindy's lisping, and Marcia's hair brush. And you know what? I am not ashamed of it at all. Not at all. :)
