There was this competition to get this award the Blue Riband for the fastest ship on the Atlantic. In 1897 a German ship Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse got the Blue Riband from the Cunard ships Lucania and Campania. To get the Blue Riband back for Britain, the British governement and Cunard decided to build two superliners which would be the Lusitania and Mauretania.

In 1903, the British government gave money to Cunard to build 2 ships that can go 24-25 knots and pay Cunard yearly that the 2 ships can be armed and the government can use them for things like war.

The Mauretania was built at Swan Hunter&Wigham Richardson, Wallsend-On-Tyne. it was launched on September 20, 1907. It could carry 563 1st class passengers, 464 2nd class passengers and 1138 3rd class passengers and 850 crew. It was the sister ship of Lusitania. Unlike the Lusitania which got torpedoed, it had a longer life.

The Mauretania went on its maiden voyage in November 16, 1907 going from Liverpool, England. During the maiden voyage, Mauretania gotthrough bad storms and fog and got to New York in time on November 22.

In April 1909 the Mauretania won the Blue Riband and kept it until July 1929. Mauretania became a popular ship.Passengers like to travel on it.
