I have been interested in cartooning since I was a small child. I used to draw on those little rainbow pads. My mother was always very supportive. My career is in computers and software, but there has always been cartooning. Eventually, I decided to write a strip, not knowing exactly how to get published. I just wanted to see if I could do it. I wanted to validate my art and my humour. So, in the spring of 1996, I started drawing SmallWorld. I shared my drawings with people at work and they seemed to enjoy it. In the summer of 1998, I found out that a friend of mine was the production manager of the local paper. I called him up, made some arrangements, and started emailing my cartoons to his newspaper, the Utah County Journal. I wasn't paid, but it was very gratifying to finally have my work in print. I also figured that if I ever wanted to get syndicated, this would certainly help. In October of the same year, the newspaper started printing as a daily for paid subscriptions. Of course, nobody at the paper bothered to tell me that. Anyway, within a week they had exhausted every cartoon I had given them. Production Notes

I get an idea from everyday life. When an idea hits me, I use one of my cartoon templates and quickly sketch the idea. I put the cartoon in a binder to be produced later.

When I'm ready to produce it, I turn on my Power Macintosh 9500/150 and launch Fractal Design's Expression application. I have templates created for that application that I choose from. I draw the cartoon using a Wacom Drawing Tablet that works well with applications like Expression, Illustrator and Photoshop that support pressure sensitive tablets. After I have drawn the cartoon, I save it as an EPS image. I open that file into Photoshop which rasterizes the image. I can do my final touches in Photoshop and save the file as an eps file for printing, and in jpeg for viewing on the WWW.
At this stage, I decided that I couldn't maintain a daily regimen of creating cartoons. I wish I could, but it isn't my day job. The site you are viewing is an updated and redesigned website that has been up for several months. Since the paper gig is up, I decided I would focus my publishing efforts on the web. I hope you enjoy it. Personal
