Schmeichel, 32, born in Gladsaxe joined from Brondby for £550,000 in August 1991. He kept 26 clean sheets in 43 games in the 94/95 season but was absent when United were hammered 4-0 by Barcelona in the Champions League, axed as Alex Ferguson juggled with the foreigners rule. During his run of that season he didn't concede a goal for 1,135 minutes. United failed to win their third successive Carling Premiership title in 94/95 and many observers point to the eight mid-season league matches the great Dane missed as the most important factor, perhaps more important than the ban on Eric Cantona. United drafted in Gary Walsh and won just four times, also going out of the Champions League. Schmeichel ruptured a disc in his back and thought that his career may be over after suffering an ankle injury the season before, which almost kept him out of their FA Cup final with Chelsea. In March 1994 Schmeichel played his 93rd successive game for United, overtaking Alex Stepney's previous record. His ex-captain Steve Bruce says of him: "Peter craves perfection, so much that if someone gets in a shot or if he has to make a save he's not happy. He sets a standard for the team, I've never known anyone take such pride in their work, he won't settle for anything but the best." Schmeichel started his career as a striker at Gladsaxe and proved he has still has an eye for goal this season, scoring with a header from a corner in the UEFA Cup v Rotor Volvograd on September 26. His goal saved United's unbeaten European record at Old Trafford, which stretched back 55 matches to 1956, but he could not stop them going out of the cup, on away goals. When not playing football Schmeichel, a volatile player, prefers music. He is learning to play the piano and also enjoys the drums, flute and guitar. His father is a professional pianist in Denmark and his mother and sisters also play. He says: "I'm so involved in soccer, I find music relaxing. When I get home I want to throw the boots away and enjoy something else." Peter performed brilliantly for United in the second half of the 1995-96 season, and was, many people believe, the reason that United were able to complete the 'double'. Despite another Championship winning season, Peter had his worst spell as United goalkeeper from mid-October towards the end of November. United's 5-0 thrashing by Newcastle, two european defeats at Old Trafford, and an incredible 6-3 humiliation at Southampton had football fans suggesting the Great Dane had lost his edge. However Peter answered his critics with some outstanding display's, notably in the European Champions League game at Rapid Vienna in December. Peter has also been a key figure in Denmark's team that have qualified for France 98.
