David and Goliath

The famous battle between shepherd and giant is depicted here using Mayan imagery. Goliath the Philistine is dressed as a Mayan warrior and brandishes a club embedded with obsidian blades. Daved, in mid-motion, hurls a stone toward Goliath's exposed forehead. On the upper and lower borders is a depiction of a stone Mayan ballcourt, which was used in ancient times. Ball players were often depicted on Mayan pottery in the midst of the game with a larger-than- life black rubber ball between them. Here the ball has been inscribed with David's threats to kill Goliath through the power of God (God is represented as a white cloud above David). In the Mayan ballgame, the losing player was often decapitated by the victor, as was Goliath after David killed him. On the left, the Israelite army cheers David to victory as the Philistine army on the right gasps in horror at Goliath's impending doom.(1 Samuel 17)
