The Fiery Furnace

This bowl shows the three Hebrew children (Meshach, Shadrach and Abed-nego) in King Nebuchadezzar's fiery furnace. The king had built a giant golden statue of himself and commanded everyone to bow down to it. When these three Jewish young men refused, Nebuchadezzar had them thrown into a fiery furnace (which had been heated seven times hotter than normal). When the three men were thrown in, the soldiers who did so were killed by the sudden blast of flames from the furnace's opening. Miraculously, the three Hebrews were not burned up. In fact, when Nebuchadnezzar peered into the furnace, he saw a fourth man with them whose appearance was "like a son of the gods!" (Daniel 3:25). Underneath the furnace are two hands representing the hands of God, protecting Meshach, Shadrach and Abed- nego in the furnace. Between the hands is a word representing "God", written in Hebrew.
