Woman Washing Jesus' Feet

This scene is based on the murals of the ancient Mayan city of Bonampak. It depicts a scene when Jesus was eating at the house of a Pharisee and a woman "who was a sinner" entered and began to clean Jesus' feet with her tears and hair. The Pharisee and his guests were displeased. But Jesus forgave her of her sins when He said, "Therefore I tell you, her sins, which were many, are forgiven, for she loved much..." His words are written in Chinese inside the cartouche. The Mayan bench on which He reclines is overlaid with a thorn motif inspired by designs on Chinese bronze vessels. This thorn motif alludes to Jesus' eventual death on the cross and victory over sin.(Luke 7:36-50)
