THE SCOUT METHOD - HOW TO INSTRUCT

Nobody can teach what he does not know. Leaders must learn before they can instruct and before they can train the boys.

The Scout Method is learning by Doing.

You should instruct in three stages:

  1. Explanation : Be simple, use clear words.
  2. Demonstration : Be practical, use real things. E.g. rope for knotting
  3. Application : Use what you have explained and demonstrated in a practical way. Most of what we learn should be used.

The Scout System is for the Leader to train the P.L. or Sixer and for them to train the boys in their Patrol or Six. Keep numbers small in order to be able to give practical training. Set the pace of learning for the slowest member in the group. Remember that boys will make mistakes.

Avoid subjects taught at school.

Make full use of local people who have special knowledge. Invite them to demonstrate their skills to the boys.
