(990104) Today's Calendar and Clock Page
http://www.panix.com/~wlinden/calendar.shtml

Will Linden
New York, New York, USA

Happy New Year!

Today's Calendar and Clock Page is ripe with data about the current day, week, month and year. Not limited to just one particular calender, many cultures are represented through statistics and pointers to other sites. Will Linden continues to add resources to this mostly text page over the years, avoiding the temptation to add flashy graphics, bells and whistles — the ASCII renditions of Moon and Earth phases are a clever touch. To explore everything at Today's Calendar and Clock Page completely you will need several hours, but even a quick look will be beneficial for anyone interested in time and how we keep track of it.  (Back to top of page)

(990105) UK online Record Shops directory
http://www.moremusic.co.uk/links/uk_shops.htm

More Music
Swansea, West Wales

There used to be a time, early in the history of the United States when an item that was manufactured overseas and marked "Imported" was a big deal. As the world became a smaller place and domestic production increased, the prestige of imports gave way to a feeling of lesser quality. Things change, and eventually US concerns flooded the world market with mass production. From the clothes people wear right down to the food put on tables. Popular Culture is probably the most influential/destructive thing to be exported. Music fans would seek out American records during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. North American Jazz, Rhythm and Blues and ultimately Rock and Roll records started to dominate world charts. This stills occurs, but along the way things turned back on the US. Volumes could be written about the influence on American Popular Culture acts like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones had, especially the demands created and placed on the music industry by artists and consumers alike. Patterns established early in the game included the release of completely different product versions being marketed in different countries. Music fans can still wait months for a single to be released domestically and will frequently seek out a copy of the recording from a store specializing in imported albums and singles or simply contact a store in their country of choice. At no time in the history of the world has that been easier than now. The Internet has made it possible for people to shop on a global level and More Music is one such business making this possible. Focusing on hard to find items, More Music has an impressive site for a company dealing in secondhand records, etc. Even more impressive is the listing they provide for hundreds of other shops and labels in the UK. Ideal for travelers and/or individuals seeking out a record never released at home or just curious about up and coming talent. The list contains pointers and e-mail addresses along with a brief listing of each store's specialty. Make certain to visit the main More Music site (http://www.moremusic.co.uk/) while you're there.  (Back to top of page)

(990106) imágenes de la mancha
http://www.monarte.com.ar

Mónica Gallardo
Buenos Aires, Argentina

Mónica Gallardo is an artist who works with watercolors. Currently featured at this site are beautiful landscapes on a rather unusual media. The images are collectively called…

mis cajas
acuarelas sobre cajas de carton

my boxes
watercolors on boxes

Cardboard boxes broken down flat and painted on may not instantly qualify as fine art, but the work is refreshing and exciting. In addition to the present exhibition, imágenes de la mancha doubles as a portfolio celebrating several years worth of work in diverse forms. The scans on display and the bilingual text are all small, so moving a little bit closer to the monitor might be a good idea. Each piece is visible in detail by selecting it. There are some very nice paintings here.  (Back to top of page)

(990107) Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (AMFPA)
http://www.amfpa.com/

Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists (AMFPA)
Furstentum, Liechtenstein

Founded in 1956, the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists consists of approximately five hundred members worldwide. These painters have used the slogan "No pity please" since the beginning of the guild to symbolize their self-reliance and artistic ability. A look at the gallery (http://www.amfpa.com/~vdmfk/navigate/_gallerie/ff_.phtml?lang=eng&men=galerie.phtml&sub=) will show the high artistic standards set by the Association, and talents of just a few of its members. The selection changes on a monthly basis and is constantly impressive. German, English, Spanish and French language versions can be accessed from the main page, making it a truly international site.  (Back to top of page)

(990109) The Old Timer Page
The Way We Used To Do it...
http://www.waltonfeed.com/old/

Al Durtschi
Walton Feed, Inc.
Montpelier, Idaho, USA

For folks who remember the early part of this century or have heard first-hand accounts of daily life back when things were not as convenient as they are today this site may not be all that interesting. But for those of us who take electrified homes and modern plumbing for granted there is a great deal to be learned through the stories and pointers at The Old Timer Page. You'll find basic instructions for potting and salt curing meat, making soap, building a cistern or root cellar, and a host of other "primitive" activities here which may come in handy for living closer to the land. Paranoia and doom are the flavors of the week as we enter the last two years of this century and even though the end of civilization as we know it is not the theme of these pages, the skills and topics here might come in handy if need be. If nothing else, The Old Timer Page will serve as a reminder that we indeed do have life a lot easier than our parents and grandparents did when they were our age.  (Back to top of page)

(990110) Coke price in vending machines around the world
Prix de cannettes de Coke dans les machines distributrices du monde entier

http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/3294/coke.html

Sylvain "Be Bop Jazz" Leblanc
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Ever wonder what a can of Coca-Cola sells for out of a vending machine at the J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building in Washington, D.C.? How about out in front of the K-Mart store at Windsor, Ontario or in the Department of Computer Science, Pisa, Italy? Better yet, how would you like to share your local Coca-Cola economy indicator with the rest of the world? With the help of visitors, Sylvain Leblanc has assembled a large collection of prices and sizes for vending machines dispensing ice-cold cans of Coca-Cola beverages. Not a Coca-Cola Company site and by no means up-to-the-minute accurate, this site provides an interesting look at one small aspect of the world economy.  (Back to top of page)

(990111) Hello? --A Pointless Exercise in Telephony
http://www.cardhouse.com/g/moj/mojave.htm

Godfrey Daniels
Tempe, Arizona, USA

Without giving away the entire story — Godfrey Daniels reads an account of a remote telephone booth. The telephone is the only landmark on the map for miles around, it happens to be in the middle of the Mojave Desert. He calls many times and one day someone answers. Nobody answered when I called, you may have better luck.  (Back to top of page)

(990112) 3 GUYS WHO DRAW
The Serious Funnies
http://www.3guys.com/

John Blair Moore, Larry Nolte and Roy Smith
Hosted by John Steffen Associates Inc.
St. Louis, Missouri, USA

It sure is nice to see good old-fashioned illustrators getting work, especially with the hundreds of clip-art volumes which have flooded the market in the past few years. This is the real stuff, created with pens and craftsmanship. John Blair Moore, Larry Nolte and Roy Smith are the three guys who draw and this site acts as a portfolio and showcase for them. You'll see cartoons like The Serious Funnies whereby a single topic or idea is given life by each of the artists, often with vastly different end results. Regular strips and assorted goodies help to keep the site fresh and entertaining. It is work like this that makes me laugh in the face of "artists" who whine about commercial art being less than noble. Do not expect to find free clip-art, the pieces here are examples of how three guys make a living. Honor and protect their copyrights if you would, we as a society need guys like these around.  (Back to top of page)

(990113) Help For World Travelers
http://kropla.com/

Steve Kropla
Kingwood, Texas, USA

A trip overseas can quickly become a nightmare if the traveler is not prepared, especially if electric/electronic devices are being brought along on the trip. Electric current used to operate laptop computers and recharge their batteries, run hair dryers, etc. varies from country to country and even from town to town in some places. Telephones and televisions add two more levels of standards making it nearly impossible for one to bring toys and tools for use on the go without a batch of adaptors and a some know-how. Steve Kropla has brought together a world of useful information here to include assorted hardware requirement/standards tables, pointers to other travel related sites and handy tips aplenty. The gallery of pictures shot during Steve Kropla's many adventures is very nice as well.  (Back to top of page)

(990114) Welcome to Osaka Yennichi
http://www.osakanews.com/en/index_e.html

The Osaka Shimbun
Osaka, Japan

Housed at this site are free versions of carnival games popular during festivals in Japan. You'll need a browser version 2.0 or higher and must have the ShockWave plug-in installed to play. The games are simple but fun and allow scores to be tracked and accumulated for prizes. Gold Fish Catch, Frog Race, Pachinko, and the "En" or credit granting Yennichi Jizo are well designed and suitable for children of all ages. Available in English and Japanese language versions.

From the site…

"Yennichi in Japanese refers to the day when a strong invisible connection between the real world and the gods or Buddha is supposed to occur, or in other words, the possibility of a significant encounter. When people visit shrines or temples on Yennichi, it is said that they can receive the words and blessings of the gods. Many people visit shines and temples on Yennichi, and many vendors open amusing stalls on their premises. Come on! Those who enjoy these stalls!"  (Back to top of page)

(990115) Chip Rowe's Electric Fun: Humor, Interviews, Pranks, Sex and Fun
http://www.chiprowe.com/

Chip Rowe
Chicago, Illinois, USA

You may have heard of Chip Rowe before, he's the guy who made inroads to discover why both Betty was not included in a bottle of Flintstones vitamins, and why Velma suffered the same fate in the Scooby Doo kind. He publishes a zine called Chip's Closet Cleaner which explores Popular Culture and the mementos it gives us and is a raving fan of the whole zine thang. Most of his income comes from a job as an editor at Playboy, working with words more than pictures. Chip Rowe's Electric Fun is a hobby for the man — full of hilarious pieces and projects on topics as diverse as the most boring displays throughout the Smithsonian, how the record clubs make a profit, grocery coupons, a version of Punch-Line Theater for the elementary school set ("Pea-green soup") and even some stuff about bootleg Spinal Tap video tapes. Some of the more interesting material is not suited for children but nothing here is all that offensive anyway. Recommended for a good read.  (Back to top of page)

(990116) Microsoft TerraServer
http://terraserver.microsoft.com/

Microsoft Corporation
Redmond, Washington, USA

Microsoft TerraServer displays satellite images from the United States Geological Survey (http://www.usgs.gov/) and SPIN-2 (http://www.spin-2.com/), a joint venture of SOVINFORMSPUTNIK the Interbranch Association of Russian space agencies in Moscow, Aerial Images Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina and Central Trading Systems Inc. in Huntington Bay, New York. The images here are mostly of North American and Europe and while many areas go unseen there is enough to keep visitors fascinated for hours on end looking at neighborhood level views of the planet in remarkable detail. A collection of well known locations is available for starters, but soon you will be looking for your own house or business.

Start by picking the general area of interest by entering a place name or by using the quick loading map, then work your way in before switching to the photographs, this will save time and minimize the frustration of "getting lost" defining a search. You can also enter the latitude and longitude of a place but that takes some of the fun out of the whole thing. Good map reading skills are a plus and certain pages require a Java enabled browser for best results. Ideas for using Microsoft TerraServer might include projects and reports or just trying to find as many ballparks as possible. I've included the URLs for a few bridges, starting with one of the Famous Places offered at the site. If you receive an error message using the data below make certain that the (entire string) has been copied and pasted. If you come up with a set of images sharing a common theme let me know and they will be included here at the Site du Jour of the Day Archive site. Enjoy!

(990117) Sweep The Net Sweepstakes Newsletter
http://www.sweepthenet.com

Sweep the Net Sweepstakes News
Lakewood, California, USA

During the past two years the number of sites run by large commercial entities has exploded. Many of these sites hold contests and sweepstakes to raise brand awareness by giving away some pretty nifty prizes. Searching for these contest entries can be a chore, even at the many "Freebies" sites out there. Sweep The Net Sweepstakes Newsletter is different in that the site itself is little more than a place to sign up for the e-mail announcements that give basic details and about ten URLs which lead directly to the contests — no more wading through page after page of someone else's site. Available several times a week or as a Super Monday Issue, this convenient service used to require a paid subscription but is now being offered free. Subscribe to Sweep The Net Sweepstakes Newsletter by visiting the site or by mailing your request to (sweepthenet@sweepthenet.com).  (Back to top of page)

(990120) Comedy Cafe - Joke Engine
http://www.comedycafe.com.au/joke_engine.html

Artsim
Artist Services Pty Ltd & Simson Media Pty Ltd
Collingwood, Victoria, Australia

Joke sites are plentiful but the Comedy Cafe (http://www.comedycafe.com.au/) Joke Engine has a novel twist. Instead of initially loading page after page of jokes, visitors can select a topic and a level of decency using a rating system running from tame to pretty rude. Although the rating system could stand to be enforced a little closer, there are some funny one-liners and longer jokes here. Some of the material is as old as the hills but for the most part, it's funny stuff. Part of the attraction of the Comedy Cafe Joke Engine is the opportunity visitors are given to vote on the quality of the jokes. The higher a piece is rated, the closer to the top of the heap it goes. If that weren't enough, you can submit your own jokes for the world to read. The Comedy Cafe site also features pages about comedians, television shows and an assortment of pointers to related sites.  (Back to top of page)

(990121) itList - The Online Bookmark Manager
http://www.itlist.com/

itList
Bloomington, Indiana, USA

If you've ever experienced the frustration associated with being unable to access your bookmark list because it is on another machine then you'll appreciate itList. This free service allows you to store the URLs of your favorite sites and pull them up from a connection to the itList site no matter where you are. The registration process is simple, pick a user name and a password and then in a short time copy and paste information using multiple browser windows, your bookmarks or a number of other methods. Be certain to make your itList private otherwise the world will be able to see what you have in it just by looking at the list of users and the lists each has built. This list availability could work to a different advantage if you'd like to share bookmarks with family and friends. Send the user name and password to group members who will be allowed editing privileges and they too can add to the collection. Send just the URL of your itList to others who might be inclined to add stupid sites — as if anyone would ever put stupid sites on a bookmark list. itList Was the first site of its kind and has spawned a few imitators along the way. A nice, free service that will aid anyone who travels or uses more than one machine on a regular basis.  (Back to top of page)

(990122) IMOM~Help for pets
http://www.imom.org/

IMOM, Inc.
Cheltenham, Maryland, USA

In television and stage acting there is a long held belief that children and animals will steal a scene every time. This is especially true in the wacky world of advertising, so much so that it is easy to determine which demographic an agency selling pet food is targeting by looking at the animals in the advertisement. For people who grew up in the late 1950s and early 1960s, memories of specific breeds like the Collie trigger spending. "If it's good enough for Lassie it's good enough for our family, just ask grandma." A few factors play into this phenomenon but the largest influence comes from the world of entertainment. Disney might very well be in the business of selling puppies if it wasn't for the fact that breed fads are extremely short lived. It's difficult to say how many of the 101 Dalmatians eventually became pets when Uncle Walt released the live action feature a few years back, but it's probably safe to say that business was brisk for breeders and pet shop owners.

IMOM is a non-profit organization the purpose of which is to aid and assist pets and their owners in times of need. Caring for a sick pet can be an emotionally trying time and just such an event prompted the formation of IMOM — In Memory of Magic, a black cat. In addition to tips from others on training and caring for pets, there are sections on veterinarian referrals, rescue sites, mailing lists and many other pointers. A big push for IMOM since its inception last year has been a public awareness campaign designed to expose the horrors of puppy mills — quite literally breeding factories where animals are big business. It's a safe bet that the pet store in your local mall has at least one puppy mill as a vendor. Animals bred this way often have health problems from close captivity and inbreeding. Next time you are in the mall drop by the Kitty Kafé or Doggy Deli store and ask them to see the puppy freezer, the ice cold storage unit in the back where they keep returns. They may not be interested in showing it to you but you'll never know until you try.

IMOM is urging visitors and pet owners to ask the American Kennel Club (http://www.akc.org/) to enforce guidelines set up for chapter members who churn out animal "product," and to help generate media attention focusing on the cruel conditions and procedures some of these breeders ignore. A not-for-profit organization, The American Kennel Club has maintained a purebred dog registry for over 100 years and champions responsible dog ownership. The number of say, Dalmatians being registered might very well be declining these days, but statistics presented at the IMOM site question whether the increasing quantity and declining quality of animals registered by the AKC may be partially based on lower self-imposed standards than in the past. In particular, pressures from the breeding industry to satisfy consumer demand. Noting here that free enterprise works this way, the idea of dumping (live)stock when a market has softened may be more prevalent than the public sees in the dog business. The American Kennel Club site has a section titled "A Breeder’s Responsibility" (http://www.akc.org/dbbrdr.htm) which outlines recommended policies for proper conduct. Perhaps there is a lesson in all of this about the Human condition.  (Back to top of page)

(990124) BRILL'S CONTENT
The Independent Voice of the Information Age
http://www.brillscontent.com/

Brill Media Ventures, L.P.
New York, New York, USA

Only six issues old, BRILL'S CONTENT is quickly becoming a force in American media. Editors of the near monthly publication explore stories the rest of the establishment either chose to ignore, or avoid altogether so as not to confuse audiences by making them think when they should be paying attention to commercial advertisements. The media itself is often scrutinized by BRILL'S CONTENT, holding them accountable if you will — December/January's cover story was about the American Broadcasting Company's (http://abc.go.com/) blatant destruction of a piece on parent company Disney (http://disney.go.com/). The "Liberal Media" as it is often referred to by right-wing concerns must either love BRILL'S CONTENT for showing a bit of much needed guidance, or absolutely loathe BRILL'S CONTENT for exposing weaknesses. The site contains full text articles back to the first issue and much more. This is serious news, information and opinion, no overblown conspiracies or theories to speak of. Not for everyone, but BRILL'S CONTENT may change the way you think about censorship in the media forever. They're going to get themselves into trouble soon too, for being right.  (Back to top of page)

(990125) SatPasses
Satellite Passes Over North American Cities
http://www.bester.com/satpasses.html

Bester Tracking Systems
Emeryville, California, USA

In the thirty years since the space race heated up, ground based observers have had the pleasure of seeing or listening to man-made objects passing overhead. Russian technology held the world in awe as Sputnik beeped and blinked for an audience of millions. Who can forget the anticipation of being creamed by Skylab during its last failing orbits? Today there are several distinct satellites visible with the naked eye, binoculars or telescopes, and Bester Tracking Systems has data available for such observations from major North American cities at this site. Included are Shuttle Missions (once up), Russia's Space Station Mir, International Space Station, Hubble Space Telescope, Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, Ocean Remote Sensing Satellite Seasat and the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission. For people living outside of North America, the Visual Satellite Observer's Home Page (http://www.satellite.eu.org/sat/vsohp/satintro.html) produced by Jeff Hunt, Neil Clifford and Bart De Pontieu is an alternate resource with many international pointers and options.  (Back to top of page)

Windows98 Annoyances
Windows95 Annoyances
http://www.annoyances.org/

Creative Element
Oakland, California, USA

Here's a handy site for working with the nuances of Windows98 and Windows95. With the millions of things to do while working within either operating system, calling them annoyances might be a tender excuse for not reading the instructions. No matter, the pages at this site and in the printed book form offer up tips for everything from changing the start-up screen to changing the shut-down screen and all points in between. Designed for users who are already comfortable with the OS, the ideas at Annoyances.org could cause trouble in the wrong hands — be careful. Never make changes you aren't sure about and never before making a good backup, give yourself plenty of time and most importantly, remember that all of this stuff is easy once you know how.

Hardly immune to ticks and pops either, Macintosh users will be interested in Eric Prentice's MacTips from The Macintosh Guy (http://www.themacintoshguy.com/) (SdJotD 971029), also found at MacTips from The Macintosh Guy on MacNN! (http://www.macnn.com/mactips/).  (Back to top of page)

(990127) Fallsview Cam
http://www.fallsview.com/

Sheraton Fallsview Hotel and Conference Centre
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Train service helped to establish Niagara Falls as the Honeymoon Capital of the World in the late 1800s. Hard work and promotion from hotels and merchants both in New York and Ontario helped to spread the word. By the time automobile travel passed from novelty stage into luxury, millions of people came to see the Great Lakes spill over the falls. The hype continues to this day with sites and live cameras like this one at the Sheraton Fallsview Hotel and Conference Centre. In addition to taking in a fine view of Niagara Falls all day and night, visitors to this site can tour the hotel facility with a Java aplet powered, 360 degree presentation, make reservations, send post cards and even learn about parks in the area. Be certain to check the table giving times for Niagara Falls illumination, most of the year the lights are kept on until at least midnight (-5:00GMT) and this allows for a different view than one would see during daylight hours.  (Back to top of page)

(990129) Wind Energy: The Danish Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association
http://www.windpower.dk/

The Danish Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association
Copenhagen, Denmark

At first look this site would appear to be nothing but propaganda from a trade organization. That first impression will quickly pass, members of The Danish Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association have gone to great lengths in assembling an extremely comprehensive site all about the machines and science used to pull electricity from the air. Articles, statistics, photographs and a slew of educational material detail the progress being made in what has proven to be a highly economical source of power. As fossil fuel supplies get down to the bottom of the barrel during the next century it would stand to logic that the technologies involved in wind energy will continue to improve and wind parks will become more prevalent. Factors such as noise control and improvements to the look of turbines will only improve the likelihood of increased acceptance. Danish manufacturers have held better than sixty percent of the world market for high output turbines since 1996. The industry in Denmark started back in 1891 and continues to grow as the years go by. The site has many documents available to download as PDFs and after registering for such, visitors are encouraged to download the entire site for future personal reference. Wind Energy: The Danish Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association is available in Danish, English and German language versions to boot.  (Back to top of page)

(990130) The Tacky Postcard Archive
Preserving the bad taste of our era for future generations
http://home.att.net/~ro/index.htm

Edward Devereux Sheffe
Tachycardia Research
New York, New York, USA

Postcard racks have been a source for finding nuggets of bad taste for years and recently the genre has become commercially successful. Unfortunately, this is art imitating nature — publishing an advertising piece or picture postcard of local tourist attraction is easy, limited only by budget and technique. As a rule, commercial printers have no real guidelines on taste and will do the best they can to make a printed piece look good. Pleasing the client and getting paid are the two most important issues, not always in that order either. The Tacky Postcard Archive is a beautiful collection of such atrocities from decades past, with biting commentary and full annotation for every card in the growing set. If you enjoyed Derek Royal's The Gallery of the Absurd (http://absurdgallery.com/) (SdJotD 971109) then scoot over to The Tacky Postcard Archive post haste. Never going beyond your average garden variety adolescent humor and with a commendable policy of securing copyright clearance, it's hard to belive that The Tacky Postcard Archive is based in New York City.  (Back to top of page)

PBS/WGBH
WGBH Educational Foundation
Boston, Massachusetts, USA

In cooperation with MapBlast! (http://www.mapblast.com) (SdJotD 970320), the producers of the PBS series The American Experience (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/amex/index.html) have put together a sobering display of the effects of hypothetical thermonuclear weapons blasts. Enter a location and type of weapon and see the range of destruction and/or fallout from the blast. Data used for Nuclear Blast Mapper is culled from The Effects of Nuclear War, Washington: Office of Technology Assessment, Congress of the United States, 1979 (http://www.wws.princeton.edu/cgi-bin/byteserv.prl/~ota/disk3/1979/7906/7906.PDF), available as a PDF file from The Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University (http://www.wws.princeton.edu/~ota/). You can also order the complete Office of Technology Assessment Archive on CD-ROM from the United States Government Printing Office (http://www.access.gpo.gov/ota/) (SdJotD 990118).

The Cold War between the US and USSR is over, but as other nations develop the technologies required for mass destruction and continue holding pissing contests, the threat is as real as ever. Have a nice day.  (Back to top of page)
