A little information about cholesterol in our diet: we know these
things are bad for us - but we insist on eating them. Is this
because we live in America and give in to our every whim? I don't
know - email your opinion and I may include it on this page.
High cholesterol forms plaque and puts you at a greater risk for
a heart attack. Some recommended ways of lowering high
cholesterol from THE HEALTHY HEART COOKBOOK:
1. Eat fewer high-fat foods, especially those high in saturated
fats.
2. Replace part of the saturated fats in your diet with
unsaturated fats.
3. Eat fewer high-cholesterol foods.
4. Choose foods high in complex carbohydrates.
5. Reduce your weight if you are overweight.
DO NOT THINK YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS ARE FINE JUST BECAUSE YOU
HAVE A GOOD CHOLESTEROL LEVEL. This is not always true. There are
different types of cholesterol and when your doctor runs a
cholesterol screen, be sure to ask for a break down of the total
cholesterol. HDL below 35 mg/dl makes you a high risk for a heart
attack even if your total cholesterol is within normal ranges.
Any ratio of total cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol less than 4.5
places you in a low risk category. Ask your doctor!!!!!!
