A Bit About Me
And my love for the stage!

Hey there, my name is Maggi and I am a 24 year old aspiring actress who loves everything related to the stage: acting, dancing, singing, etc. I can’t sing or dance to save my life, but I do love to watch both musicals and ballets. As far as the acting is concerned, I think I’m okay but considering I’ve only been doing this for two years, I still have A LOT to learn. I’m a theater major at the Community College and my classes mostly consist of acting classes, but I’ve also taken a couple of dance classes and next semester I’m taking two technical theater classes (one to learn about building sets and lighting, the other to learn about things like being a stage manager). I want to learn ALL aspects of the stage, not just the acting part. I think it gives you more of an appreciation of those who build the sets and do the lighting so that you can get up there on stage everynight to do what you love best, act! Besides, if I never make it as an actress, maybe I could get a job behind the scenes. I don’t care, as long as my career has something (anything) to do with theater, or the movies (another favorite thing of mine). Heck, if my only job was to pick up trash in a Broadway theater and clean up the stars’ dressing rooms, I’d still be happy with that!

You should have seen my dance class in school. At times, it looked more like human bowling! My favorite part is when our instructor, Kevin, was watching us do this little routine he taught us and all he could do afterwards was shake his head in disbelief and laugh. Yup, we were that bad! But still, the dance classes that I took (Modern Dance 1 and Modern Dance 2) were a lot of fun! I plan on taking Modern Dance 3 in the fall.

My first play ever was a drama club production of the children’s play, “Cinderella,” in which I played a mouse (and a cute mouse I was, lol). I actually had a lot of lines and considering it was my first time up on stage and I had only taken one acting class at this point, I think I did a pretty decent job. That was in the spring of 1998. In the summer of 1998 I was allowed to do the spotlight for our school’s musical production of “Into the Woods.” In the fall of 1998 I audtioned for the student production of “Crimes of the Heart,” but I didn’t get a role. That was alright with me though. You win some, you lose some! In the spring of 1999 I got the part of Gay Wellington in the student production, “You Can’t Take it With You.” This was a bit different then “Cinderella.” “Cinderella” consisted of only two performances, both of which were only for the day care kids and the acting classes. “You Can’t Take it With You” however, consisted of six performances and packed houses, since the show was advertised outside of the school. I would get sooo nervouse before the show went on (I felt like passing out a few times), but once I was on stage, all of my nerves disappeared and I had fun. It was a pretty good show. Right now, I am in rehearsals for this semester’s student production, “Spoon River Anthology,” which is a play that consists of nothing but monologues, and I have five different characters. We don’t have any costume changes and we all stay on stage the entire time. Many of the characters don’t even say their names, so let’s hope the audiences can follow along without getting too confused! My characters include; a woman in love, a woman who’s been molested as a child and dumped by her husband when he finds out (he considers her no longer a virgin), a woman whose husband got her pregnant on purpose because he knew that doing so would cause her to lose her life, a woman who’s a madam, and another woman who has been shunned by the town of Spoon River. Oh yeah, and all of the characters are dead. We come back to life to tell everyone about our lives in Spoon River. Many of the characters are based on actual people. The play takes place in the 1800’s. I was also given the job of drama turg, which is a type of historian. I got to write an artcle about the playwrite, Edgar Lee Masters as well as what the play is about. It’s going to appear in our program.

I’ve been to NYC three times. Our drama club goes every year. The greatest time I ever had though was last spring when I saw Bernadette Peters live on stage, in “Annie Get Your Gun.” I admire that woman so much and to see her live for the first time ever was an awesome experience! Another favorite time was when I saw “the Diary of Anne Frank” on Broadway, which starred Natalie Portman. Another fantastic show!

I’d love to be an actress on stage, but I’d also like to try the movies. I love the work of both Tom Hanks and Winonya Ryder. If I ever got to work with those two, I’d be in Heaven! I’ve even “thought” about trying to write a screenplay, since I enjoy writing as well as acting. But first, I need to think of the perfect storyline to write about.

As you can see, I have a huge love for the theater, but this has happened only recently. When I first became a theater major, I had dreams of acting only in movies. But as I took more and more theater classes, including one on the history of theater, I began to have a real love for the stage. I don’t own many Broadway Cds (but its slowly growing) and I haven’t seen loads and loads of shows (that is slowly changing as well), but I do love the theater enough to create a web page for it! And as my knowledge of theater grows, I am hoping that this site will grow as well. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy what I have so far!
