![]() | The Episcopal Society of St. Simeon and St. Anna is a community of elders who undertake to be constant in prayer for our church and its people; to be a counselor and advocate for our diocese; and to be a living witness to God's grace through the example of their own lives. Founded by Bishop Steven Charleston in the late 1980s, this society seeks to recognize the elders among us to whom we look for guidance and see as role models. In many societies, the wisdom of the elders is held in high esteem and they are sought after for counsel. It was Bishop Steve's belief that, in our current age, we were losing touch with this rich resource and he founded the Society to reestablish the place of honor that our elders once held. For each member in the Society, there are many other elders whom they represent: men and women to whom many come in search of advice and knowledge. Just as St. Simeon and St. Anna, in their wisdom, recognized Jesus as the son of God when he was brought to the temple, so we will look to our Society elders for foresight and understanding. |

![]() | Members of the society wear a special gold Bishop Rowe cross. As of May, 2001, there were 48 parishes and missions in Alaska of which 36 had a total of 180 St. Simeon and St. Anna members. Each year, the parishes select nominees whose names are brought to the Deanery Convocation and then prayerfully selected by lot. Those whose names are drawn are inducted into the Society at the Diocesan Convention. Just as Mathias was chosen by lot to become the apostle to replace Judas, so lots are used, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to bring to light the names of Society members to represent all of our elders. |
