Unconfirmed from down the line
Wellington. North Island Streetstocks. Won by 45a Bill Peat
Christchurch. New Zealand Modifieds. Frost, Game, Keegan. 1,2,3.
Word from the mainland is that Murray Gordge was leading after 24 and 3/4's laps in the 25 lap championship. He spun onto the straight going to the chequered flag got hit by Wishart and both lost their places. Frost had started off the back and passed the field to win. He went into the last lap in 4th place.

There was no need of a qualifying meeting. Not enough cars turned up to make it necessary.

When entries closed on January 4th although there were not a huge number of entries there were enough to make qualifying a requirement. On the night fortunately late entries swelled the car count but no shows mean’t that there were simply not enough cars in the pits to justify ripping the public off by running nonsense races, where nobody was going to risk damaging their cars.

The entry form under Conditions of Entry stated ‘In the event that a competitor has forwarded an entry form and is unable to attend, the competitor must notify promotions at the A.S.S.C.C. that they are unable to attend’. I guess those that had entered and could not make the show will notify the club of their decision sometime next week, or next month, or next year!

SNZ have called an emergency meeting for next week. They are to discuss an on going dispute where the A.S.S.C.C. are demanding an incompetent SNZ official be sacked but the SNZ are saying you may not want him and as bad as he is he stays because no SNZ official gets fired just because he makes mistakes. Of course the fact that there are not enough A-Grade Stockcars able to make a decent field for the GP is not an issue and is not on the meeting agenda.
The prizemoney on the GP was $12,150 and none of it for stirring. Thats only about 3,000 dollars less than the Nationals are paying even with their extra heats and extra non-qualifiers arces.

There will be lots of nonsensical theorys put forward as to why the G.P. failed to attract a decent field and why some of those that did enter couldn’t make it, but poor prizemoney is not an excuse. Some would have stayed away out of fear of the Auckland scrutineers, some because they are scared of the high speed crashes into Waikaraka Park’s concrete wall. Some because they are broke, some because their cars are too soft to to survive a meeting at Waikaraka Park. A factor is that three meetings in a row for A-Grade stockcars is too many and another date should have been allocated for the G.P. Of course the fact that there are drivers out there who can not race three meetings in three weeks is a sad endictment on their committment. It was not a problem 10 years ago, and is not a problem with some other sections which have keener competitors. The over lying reason for the GP being so undersubscibed with competitors is money. Racers who don’t have enough money target their meetings. They simply do not travel to a meeting which they know they can not win, they can’t afford to pay for the damage to their car, the costs of staying away from their home or the loss of income from being away from their jobs.

Tonight was a sad day for New Zealand Stockcar Racing. SNZ must ensure that it never happens again. The reasons for the crowd at Waikaraka Park being either given their money back or given a pass worth $3.00 more than they had paid to get into the meeting must be investigated and immediate emergency action taken. The A.S.S.C.C. took a major bath financially with the limited saloon meeting last week, have lost a poultice of money on this meeting, and may in fact be better off pulling the plug and finishing the season early, there is no point in promoting meetings if competitors don’t want to come and race. Run a couple of demolition derbys, put the money in the bank and invite the experts to put in writing how to they think the Park should be promoted next season!!
