Auckland Streetstock Championship, Auckland Sidecar Championship and Mad Butcher Demolition Derby
Waikaraka Park 27th March 1999.

The final night’s racing of the season pulled a huge crowd.
There were a four visiting Streetstock drivers, two from Huntly, Alan King from Rotorua and regular visitor Gary Gray from Kihikihi. The Streetstocks raced hard, Neil Pemberton stirred but Merv Lewis won the plaque as stirrer of the Championship. Pemberton’s team mates, the Gavin Bros finished 1st and 3rd. Tony in #92 winning and Steve in #29 lost a run-off to take home third. Bill Peat took the runners-up spot after spinning Gavin in their run-off on the first lap. Even though Steve tried to everything to get lapped and thus be able to attack the big white 45 from behind, Bill just hung ontp the Torana’s bumper and pushed the snaller car around and around until the chequerewd was unfurled in his favour. Graeme Cummins took a tumble in his VW and failed to make repairs in time for the final race in the Championship. In the same race that the green #53 dub went belly up Gary Gray in the green Holden also took a tumble. Gray, who was scheduled to team’s race the following day at his home track, was repaired in time to come back out for his next event

The Sidecars have had a terrible home season at the Park, track conditions forcing the boys from the big smoke to seek smoother surfaces at out of town Speedways. On the night the track was fine and after three heats Matt and Nick Edmonds were tied on points with Grant O’Reilly and Shaun Thompson. The #52 bike couldn’t front the tapes for the 3 lap decider as it had blown a clutch so the Bros on the #37 are the Champions. In the third heat the swinger of the pair later to win the title took a heavy tumble going into the first turn. Dis-orientated and sore he refused to climb back aboard the bike for the re-run. As soon as he relized that he wasn’t too badly injured he told his brother to get back to the gates. They went on to win the race. The Chrome bike #52 took a heavy whack to the chair wheel in the second heat and were lucky to finish a struggling third. At the end of the race the third wheel would not go round as it was stuck solid against the frame. In the deciding third heat they were in a spectacular fight for second position with the #58 bike of Stu Davis and Ronald McHardy. The white bike in a do or die move in the final bend somersaulted throwing Stu and his crew on to the track.. Both were hurt and needed to be ambulanced away. Unofficially the score was a broken hand and broken leg and neither were at the track, or in a fit state to receive their third palce trophies in the Championship. The win and a second in their first races were enough, in spite a a dnf, to get third in the Auckland Champs.

Super Saloons ran a limited field but Skinny and Jennings entertained. Skinny took a pair of wins but Lance won the last. Mike Ross searched the track for grip and although he made some spectacular moves never quite made them stick.

Limited saloons ran a full field and the placings were evenly distributed. Tim Hood was back after his big crash the week before and Nigel Ross went twice into the wall in two in a row races.

Standard Stocks crashed banged and walloped their way around the track in what passes for a Standard Stock race. If a race is defined as a minimum of two seeing who iis the quickest over a given distance then Standard Stocks do not race. They grace the track with their presence and spend a short time trying to destroy themselves and anyone else within hitting distance. It is not a race but it is highly entertaining. The #64 lost a driveshaft in the first race and went to the pits on the hook. Carlos won the second and reverted to his stirrer mode in the third, where he he came all but last. He did however beat ome Shay Hambling in #24 inn that race. Shay had won the opener.

A small field of mods fronted. They raced, a couple crashed, a couple hit the wall, a couple spun and three of them each had a win.

Stockcars had 13 cars, one of which was a vistor. Stan Hickey took two wins and fourth in his three races. The Green Team cars, 111a, 115a, and 116a seemed to be intent on taking each other out, although they looked to have ganged up the veteran Dave Tennant in the vintage #75 in the second heat. Dirty dave still took the flag in that race in spite of the attention.

The derby was tame, too many cars spoiled the spectacle. The Toyota Corona wagon that out survived them all was totally spoiled but still mobile enough to do a victory lap.

Probably accurate but certainly nearly accurate results.
