"The Narrabri Huey , Duey, and Luey Saga"

Sunday Telegraph 6 December 1999

"What debacle has this Union got into this time"

How can this Union defend two employees caught using public resources to vilify and ridicule management of a large Rural Council?

We certainly do not condemn these employees, nor do we deny them the right to have their case put forward in an articulate manner. But, if we were these two individuals, we would have sought out by now, competent and effective representation for our case.

It would only be fair to inform these two Narrabri members, that this Union is on its own witch-hunt, and we are sure that the conduct of this Union will be raised before during and after any hearings on this matter.

We would suggest that the two individuals who have lodged this claim of unfair dismissal seek out independent and objective representation. It would certainly be of little assistance to have members of this Union who have been treated in a similar manner by this Union, appear and give evidence to that effect. The hypocrisy of this situation is absolutely appalling. Not only is this hypocritical of this Union, but it exposes these members to an unacceptable risk through this conflict of interest.

We strongly advise these troubled members to seek out objective legal advice.

Sydney Metro Area

On a similar vein, advice given to a Western Sydney delegate has landed him in hot water, and a suspension.

Two employees fighting on the Job, with one indicating that legal action was a possible scenario, the delegate is informed not to contact these employees by council management. This delegate contacted the Union who ill advised him to contact the injured employee, this delegate attempted to contact this injured person. A complaint was laid, and now, through poor advice another delegate is in suspense as to his future.

This is certainly a queer coincidence, lets hope that this delegate seeks objective legal representation, and appropriates blame in its proper environment.

These are just two of the sad stories of Union members being given erroneous advise. Advise which costs them dearly.

Remember these are the battlers on $400-$500 a week before tax, these are the people who live from week to week , from hand to mouth , the members who sometimes have to seek assistance from charitable organizations , because of poor wages.

We are aware of many members, in both the Metropolitan and Rural areas, members with large families who rely on the Salvation Army and St. Vincent De Paul for clothes, for themselves and their children. For some members this will be not the happy Christmas you see in the Coles Myer ads, or the Lord Mayors New Years Eve Party. (Oh! How many Union Officials will be there?) These are the battlers who for some unknown reason continue to pay Union fees to keep these UNION BOSSES in luxury.

That $5 a week you pay to keep these people in Luxury Offices, in Luxury Cars , Motels and Conferences in which they discuss how to increase your contribution , this $5 a week would be better spent on your family.

How many of these Union Employees, have lived of this Union for most of their working lives?

We would remind you again, especially at this time of the year, to peruse you last expensive Union Magazine ,(The one you pay for) to see whom these UNION BOSSES support . Yes! The highly paid TEACHERS, MINERS, OR WHARF LABORERS, people whom most ,earn a minimum of twice the average council worker.

"Lower Wages for Local Government Workers"

The stinking thinking must be banished!

For rural areas, Workplace Agreements are imperative to keep employment in the area, there must be a different thought process put into action, there must be an activation of Public Works, after the Olympics. The resources that were used to capitalize this "Bread and Circus " activity must now be channeled into rural New South Wales.

These massive resources could be channeled into the state road network, rail network, tourism for not only the north coast, but the west of the state. There are people from around the world who would pay high prices for a taste of the real Australia, a taste of how the Real Battler lives, not the "struggle street" ,or "keeping the dream alive" of millionaire radio jocks.

All this can only be achieved by pulling together. The Carr government, while not perfect, is attempting to do this. Rather than just emotionally follow the loudmouths, we ask, that you ponder on the decisions that are emanating from this government.

There is only one cake, and it must be divided as equally as possible, those who are disadvantaged must of course be treated a little more fairly, by that we refer to Rural New South Wales.

Remember the public purse is not an endless pit of money, and the ones to suffer most are those in rural areas.

Again who is suffering? The Local Government Employee.

We again ask the question?

What has this Union achieved, other than loss of jobs, loss of wages, loss of members, and loss of dignity?

NOTHING! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

Questions you must ask yourself?

Is it in my interests to maintain membership of this Union?

Or

Shall I resign immediately, regain my self-esteem and give myself a pay rise?

REMEMBER! It is your decision!
