    What is Spiritual Direction?

Holy listening... Prayerful companioning... Contemplative silence... These are all elements of Spiritual Direction. Spiritual Direction is an ancient tradition of the church. We see it even before in the relationships with Jesus and his disciples but also in the Apostles relationships with those they were mentoring. The Desert Mothers and Fathers were some of the first to minister in the tradition as we know it today. Spiritual Direction is grounded in Mystery and in relationship: our relationship with God and with one another. It is a relationship which comes alongside as is spoken of the Spirit and is dependent upon the Spirit of God to guide and direct.

Group Spiritual Direction is also grounded in Mystery, in the Holy. We use a very simple process which honors and supports this grounding: silence; the sharing of a participant; silence; response from the group; silence. There is also a time to reflect on our time together at the end. In the group spiritual direction setting the group becomes the spiritual director for each individual in the group. This helps us to see from more than one perspective.

If you would be interested in being involved in group Spiritual Direction please contact Dorethy Speakes at 849-0186 or at 471-2897 and a seminar on the subject will be arranged
