My name is Bobby Joey. My Mom calls me Joey and my Dad calls me Bobby. I don't know why, but I come to both. I fell out of my nest in a great big palm tree when I was only a few days old. A cat almost got me, but a little girl saved me and brought me to my Mom, who is the animal lady of the neighborhood. She fed me on a bottle and in about 2 weeks, my eyes opened and I saw her and my new home. My Dad built me a huge cage when I got to where I could run around and they put it in the dining room. I lived in there till I was almost a year old. Then I got to move outside to the even bigger aviary. Then my Dad built me a mansion inside the aviary. It is two stories with a big lanai (balcony) all around the front. I get to come out and run around the yard when my Dad lets me. We play and he give me stuff to bury and I chase the cats. I have lots of fun, and sometimes I climb the big tree and don't come down for a long time. But I always climb back down and jump on Dad's shoulders for him to take me home by nighttime. Because when it is my bedtime, I want to be in my very own bed! Sometimes I still go in the house and play too. I run all around and bury nuts in the strangest places and once again, chase the cats. Sometimes the little dogs too. They are all scared of me because sometimes I jump on them! I am almost 5 years old. About 2 years ago, there was another little squirrel that got trapped in our front yard tree. My Dad tried all day to get her down. She was still pretty little and Dad thought maybe she could be my friend. Anyway, he never got her. Then later on, right after dark, one of Mom's cats came in the back door and Mom heard some weird screaming. Cooter, the cat, had caught the little girl squirrel and brought him to my Mom. As soon as Cooter let her go, she started screaming and ran behind a bookcase. Mom grabbed up the dogs and cats and put them in a bedroom and called for Dad. He came running and finally coaxed the baby squirrel out. The next day, they put her in the big aviary with me, but I didn't really like her and I scared her. So, Dad made her another cage right next to mine, so she would get used to me and grow up some. Finally after chewing a hole between the cages, Dad let us be together. But I still didn't like her and hated sharing my food and my Dad. She made her bed in a big tube Dad put in the cage. To this day, I still chase her when she goes to Dad to get food. I did teach her to play with my "bad guys". They are the stuffed toys that Dad hangs in my cage for me to attack. I am very fat, but that is OK. I like to eat very much. I love pecans and I hear they are fattening. Girlfriend, the girl squirrel who lives with me, is just as fat as me now, so I don't feel bad. At least I'm not out scratching for food everyday like the other squirrels who live in this neighborhood. I really don't know how they do it, especially in the winter when all the trees are bare. It was a ground squirrel where I am a beautiful tree squirrel. Mom said that that Joey was a girl and when she got a certain age and wanted to have babies, she started getting mean and they had to let her go into the almond orchards. Almonds were her favorite food. She was very big when they let her go and prettier than most ground squirrels. She probably stole someone else's burrow and their boyfriend too. I hope she had a great family and a nice life. But as for me, I am perfectly happy right where I am and this is where I will stay. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ UPDATE--UPDATE--UPDATE--UPDATE Our Bobby Joey died May 4, 1999, the same day my dad was taken to the hospital for the last time. He was two months away from being 5 years old. My husband, Randy, was inconsolable. However, we did get another baby squirrel a few days before Joey died, and Randy is now taming him down and hopefully they will have a great relationship too, although none will EVER replace Bobby Joey!
