This section addresses the dilema faced by Sony plus users regarding the lack of a dedicated microphone input. Unlike all the other manufactures (Phillips, Mitsubishi, and Samsung), Sony® is the only one who has chosen not to include a microphone input on it's WebTv Plus terminals. There is a way arround this, however.

In order to include voice recordings in our e-mail, we are forced to use the rca audio input jacks on the rear pannel. You can't just get an adaptor and plug in a microphone. It won't work. You will need something to power or drive the microphone.

Here's a few ways in which you can make voice recordings:

  1. If you have a camcorder, you can connect it's audio outputs to your webtv's audio inputs and use the camcorders built-in mike to record your audio.

  2. If you have a cassette deck that has microphone inputs, you can use it to connect a microphone and connect the deck's audio output to webtv's audio input. You can increase or decrease the sound level by using the deck's gain control.

  3. You can use a portable mixer such as RadioShack's Sound Effects Generator #32-1116. Just connect a mike to it and then connect the audio outputs to webtv's audio inputs.

All microphones are not created equal. Some will work just fine while others, will not work at all. The following microphones have been tested and found to work with WebTv Plus:

  • Sony FV-410
  • Sony F-V5
  • Phillips M62080
  • Aiwa DM-H100
  • You can also use your webtv's audio input jacks to record the audio from a cd player, cassette deck, vcr, tv, or any other component that has line level rca audio output jacks.
