From the Gaelic MacThaoig meaning 'son of Tadhg'. Tadhg is the Gaelic word for poet or phillospher. The family came under the Clan Farquharson by a group of MacCaigs living in Braemar. There were reportadly members of this family that fought with the regiment raised by Farquharson of Monaltrie and Farquharson of Balmoral for the Army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart in 1745,
