Nuer-Dinka Peace Process

Briefing

Tuesday 24 November

10 am – 12 noon

AACC Communications Centre

To: NGOs, UN, Governmental Agencies, Sudan Peace Groups

From: NSCC

Context: Nuer and Dinka Chiefs and church leaders met in a conference during June 2-10, 1998 in Loki, Kenya and agreed to a Nuer-Dinka Loki Accord. The Accord calls for peace conferences that can resolve issues and reconcile relationships all along the Nuer-Dinka borders in southern Sudan. If this can be fully realized it could change the dynamics of this war. This process has gained a great deal of momentum and a major peace conference is planned for late January and the month of February 1999 on the west side of the Nile River. This briefing will bring all interested parties up to date and indicate ways that various groups can join the process and make their contributions to this critical peace effort. NGOs have been crying out internationally for peace and political dimensions of the Sudan conflict to be addressed as a root cause of the complex humanitarian crisis. The people on the ground have taken the initiative and are enlisting the support of those willing to commit to this effort. A Question & Answer session will be included in the briefing.
