THE QUEEN

I was just a little girl
Full of hopes and dreams -
I wasn't very happy,
Least that's the way it seems.
Sometimes things just happen
That kids cannot control.
Our souls become shattered
And we're no longer whole.

I had one dream I lived for.
A dream I dared not confess.
I prayed each night at bedtime
"God, please make me a princess!"
Princesses are always protected.
No harm could come their way.
Guards stand by their doorways
Keeping them safe night and day.

My grade three teacher told us,
"Name three things you'd like to be."
I stood up first and said aloud,
"Please, teacher, please pick me!"
I knew the things I wished for
I rhymed them off by heart . . .
"A teacher, a princess, a lady."
I thought I was so smart!

The teacher started laughing
And soon the class joined in
"Sue, you can't ever be a princess,"
She said with such a grin.
I whispered very slowly,
"I think you are so mean.
If I can't be a princess,
Then I will be a queen."

But I am still that little girl,
And today I'd like to meet
That teacher and the students
When walking down the street.
I would smile at them so sweetly,
And call them each by name.
Then I'd whisper very slowly . . .
"Can you guess what I became?!"

"Today, I am the queen
That you said I'd never be.
My kingdom is the world now,
From sea to glorious sea.
My riches are the friendships
I've made throughout the years,
The ones that shared my laughter
As well as all the tears."

"Today, I am the queen
That you said I'd never be.
I have earned the pure love
Of my precious princes, three.
My crown is filled with jewels
Of trust and truth and art.
My throne is where I'm seated
In someone else's heart."

"Today, I am the queen
That you said I'd never be.
And I am quite protected
When I depend on me.
I only learned just recently
What it is I've been,
When my son took my hand and
said, "I think you are a queen!"
