WILLIAM TOLLE

WILLIAM TOLLE, Born in Fleming County, Kentucky, April 10, 1801, died at Mt Pleasant, Iowa, at 9:30 o'clock on Thursday evening, Sept 12, 1894, aged 93 years, 5 months and 3 days.
Like a shock of grain fully matured, Father Tolle has been gathered home. His was a Christion life, without ........................ (several lines are badly blurred and unreadable) ........... His life experience has been elevating in its influence and useful to society.
Father Tolle, as he was familiarly called, came to Iowa in 1849, then in his prime and vigor of his life,, He settled on a farm east of town and very soon identified himself with the interests of his section and state. He favored and encouraged every movement tending to the upbuilding of society, improvement, the elevation of the people.
The Henry County Agricultural Society, from its first inception received his most hearty and enthusiastic support as did the organization of the grange movement, starting in the interests of the farming population, encouraging their meeting together for mutual discussion and protection. These old associations formed in connection with their enterprizes, were always held very sacred by Father Tolle, these old friends and associations very dear to him.
Nothing gave him more satisfaction in life than to give appreciation, encouragement and pleasure to others. He seemed only to notice and speak the best in people, rarely was he ever heard to critisize unfavorably or in a factious or partisan spirit. Whatever was promising a good result, he favored according to his best knowledge and judgment.
Father Tolle was first married in Kentucky, February 12, 1823 to Miss Sallie Ringo. By her he was blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters. The daughters, Mrs W.S. Grant, now living in Nebraska, and Mrs R.R. Grant resides in this city. The sons are both dead--Francis H. was a soldier in the late war, was taken prosoner near Menks Mills, Arkansas, was taken to Tyler, Texas, where he died from exposure and bad treatment.
In June 1870, Mr Tolle met with the loss of the partner of his youth, one who for over fifty years had been his true and faithful helpmeet in every trial. After the death of his beloved wife Mr Tolle was left entirely alone, his two surviving children of mature age, having families of their own. Mr Tolle felt lonely and sadly bereft. After due consideration he married Mrs Mary A. Brown, Nov 27, 1870, widow of Rev. Cummings Brown. Mrs Tolle is the sister of our esteemed citizen Mr W.G. Saunders.
Tolle resided on the farm east of town that he bought on first coming to Henry County. In 1881 he sold this farm and removed to Mt. Pleasant where he has since resided, and where he died.
Commencing on the anniversary of his 80th birthday Mr Tolle's relatives and friends have made this the occasion for an annual gathering at his residence. After the first surprise Mr Tolle expected and was greatly rejoised to thus greet his friends, and so for thirteen years has his birthday been pleasantly observed.
A friend who has known Mr Tolle quite intimately for near a quarter of a century, thus rites of him: "He was unselfish in his nature, always solicitious for the welfare of his friends, leading in every enterprise for the upbuilding of the country, and especially the farming class, aiding in the production of better crops and the improvement of all classes of stock; in short he was a useful member of society."
On his death bed he told his pastor, Rev. Mr Naylor, that now nearing his 94th yer, he could say that he never had a suit at law, either as plaintiff or defendant; never borrowed money from a bank, never lost any property by fire, never gave a mortgage, never was intoxicated or drank intoxication liquors as a beverage, never signed a pledge, never used tobacco in any form.
Thus has been his life a good example for the youth of the present day. To such, death is but the beginning of another life more gloro=ious in its possibilities.
