Abercrombie and Fitch Wear Racism on Sleeve

April/May 2002

In April, the popular American clothing brand Abercrombie and Fitch
released several T-shirts that displayed historically racist as
well as culturally ignorant images of Asians and "Asian cultural
icons" as a form of modern-day "humor".

Slogans on these shirts include:
Wong Brothers: A Laundry Service...Two Wongs Can Make it White
Get Your Buddha on the Floor
Wok 'n Bowl: Chinese Food and Bowling
etc.

These types of images only serve to perpetuate stereotypes and
make it seem "okay" to use them.

So far, there have been protests by Asian Americans and
supporters in front of A&F stores in a number of cities all over
the U.S. Although A&F has pulled the few most blatantly racist
shirts, a number of them still remain. Moreover, protesters and
boycotters are demanding that A&F go further by incorporating
sensitivity training and that CEO Michael Jeffries issue an
official public apology.
