James VANCE was born about 1784 in probably Russell County, Virginia. He is the son of Abner VANCE and Susannah HOWARD. He married Barbara MILLER in 1820 possibly Monroe County West Virginia. They had 8 children that I have listed. They are:

(1) Issac VANCE b. 1827,

(2) James H. VANCE b. 1830,

(3) Elizabeth VANCE b. 1832,

(4) Mary "Polly" VANCE b. 1833,

(5) William Harley VANCE 1836,

(6) Nancy VANCE b. 1838,

(7) Washington VANCE b. 1840,

(8) Colonal John VANCE b. 1842.
