4. JOHN HOWLAND

5. Simon Howland, was born in 1604 in Fenstanton.[1]

6. Henry Howland was born about 1603 in Fenstanton and died on January in Dec of 1669,[2/310-11] or  in Jan of 1669/70[1] in Duxbury, Plymouth Co., MA. He married Mary.[2]  Henry was on the Plymouth Tax List in 25 Mar 1633. He was on the original Freeman List of the Colony. He was elected Constable of Duxbury on 5 Jan 1635/36.[3/v.1 p. 36] He early served frequently on the trial and grand Jurys. By the late 1650's he was becoming errant in his religious beliefs for on 2 Mar. 1657/58 he was fined ten shillings for having a Quaker meeting in his house. On this same day his brother Arthur was fined the stiff sum of four pounds for the same offense and an additional five pounds for resisting the constable of Marshfield in the execution of his office.[3/v.3 p129] The Plymouth authorities disenfranchised Quakers and other offenders in June of 1659,  in an attempt to stem the rising tide of individuals in the Colony who were becoming converts to other creeds and on 6 Oct. 1659 Henry Howland was deprived of his Freeman Status, i.e. disenfranchised.[3/v.3 p167, 176] Henry continued to hold to his new Quaker beliefs and on 1 May 1660 he was charged by the court with "entertaining" another man's wife in his house, even after her husband had complained to him, presumably about his wife attending Quaker meetings there. He was also charged by the court that he had permitted a Quaker meeting and entertained a "foreign" Quaker. That is, a Quaker who wasn't a resident of the Colony. Henry denied the first charge, that of entertaining another man's wife in his house and apparently the charge wasn't proved as the court noted it "did not appeer to make it out". He was convicted and fined for the charge of entertaining a "foreign" Quaker, and was later fined by the court for commiting the offence again.[3][2/310-311]

JOHN HOWLAND. While his exact date of birth isn't known tradition holds that he was born in 1592 at Fenstanton or Fen Stanton, Huntingtonshire, Eng. However for various reasons (of which some are valid and others not so valid) some researchers have estimated his date of birth as late as 1599.[5] John died on 23 or 24 Feb.1671/72 at his home in Rocky Nook, Kingston, Plymouth Co., MA.[1] The two dates arise from the fact that the Plymouth Court Records give his death as the 23rd and the Plymouth Church records give it as the 24th.[3][4]

John married ELIZABETH TILLY on 21 Mar 1622/23 at Plymouth, Plymouth Co., MA.[1] though other sources say only that they were married in about 1624. I am not aware of where Ms white aquired the date of 21 Mar. for their marriage since the marriage wasn't recorded. Both John and Elizabeth were Mayflower passengers. Elizabeth was born    and died on 21 December 1687, in Swansea, Bristol Co., MA.  Her will was dated 17 Dec 1686.[6] She was the daughter of JOHN TILLY and JOAN HURST who both died the first winter of 1621.

John Howland was described by William Bradford, Governor of the Plymouth Colony as "a Lusty young man" in that day meaning 'lively' or 'merry'.[7/59, 59n] He came over attached to the family of Governor John Carver, but that worthy gentleman died within the first year. Bradford describes how Howland was lost overboard during the Mayflower's trip to New England, when during a storm, while the Mayflower was laying "at hull", that is, drifting with the wind with reduced sails, he came up '"above the gratings" onto the deck. The ship rolled or pitched violently in the rough seas and John was lost overboard. "...but it pleased God that he caught hold of the topsail halyards which hung overboard and ran out at length. Yet he held his hold (though he was sundry fathoms under water) till he was hauled up by the same rope to the brim of the water, and then with a boat hook and other means got into the ship again and his life saved. And though he was something ill with it, yet he lived many years after and became a profitable member both in church and comonwealth."[7/59]

After the Mayflower arrived at Cape Cod, John Howland was on the third expedition to explore their new surroundings a continuing attempt locate a suitable spot to plant their colony. John Howland was a signer of the Mayflower Compact in Dec. of 1620. He was one of the Undertakers who took over the debt the Plymouth Colony owed to the London Associates. Beside Howland the Undertakers consisted of  William Bradford, Capt. Myles Standish, Isaac Allerton, Edward Winslow, William Brewster, John Alden and Thomas Prence.
