Putting on the Whole Armour  

     Have you ever had any thoughts to why you might seem like your losing the war or battles in life? Some may have given this some thought, yet, the answer fails to surface and continuously eludes them. The reason for this, more than likely, is that one has not studied the Bible. The answer lies within the inspired words of Paul. He writes "Put on the whole armour of Yahweh, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high [places]. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of Yahweh, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand" (Ephesians 6:11-13).

     First, we are told what we must do "Put on the Whole Armour of Yahweh"; next, the reason is given as to WHY we must do this "that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." The enemy is always going to be warring against us in his clever and scheming ways. Usually it is through his lustful enticements that get us. However, this battle is not a physical battle being spoken of here. We do have a battle with the flesh as spoken of in Galatians 5:17. However, Paul is referring to a Spiritual Battle here. "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against Spiritual Wickedness in high [places]."

     Now, Paul talks about standing "against the wiles of the devil" and "that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day." He's talking about two periods of time. The first can be referred to as the things we face in everyday life. The second is talking about a period of time yet to come, referred to as a period of great tribulation, which is going to take place in endtimes. Nevertheless, we are in a constant battle and we must be prepared.

     The only way to be prepared is by putting on the Spiritual Armour. Would a Father of Love send us into battle defenseless? Of course not! So, He gave Paul the things to write about that we need to have in this fight. The Father does not want us to be without protection. Otherwise, we would be fighting in a losing battle.

     Paul's analogy of a soldier's armour should be helpful in your spiritual fight. We are going to examine each piece separately, toward seeing why they are so vital for one's protection and survival.

The Belt of Truth

     "Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth" (Ephesians 6:14). Isn't it quite interesting to see what the first item mentioned is? Paul could have listed any other part first, but he didn't. More than likely, our Heavenly Father had a hand in this. For with out the Word of Truth we have nothing, and this is the belt we must wear at all times.

     When Paul said "have your loins girt about with truth," he was referring to what we more commonly know as a belt. A belt has many purposes. When we speak of a belt, we think of something that holds a pair of pants up, or a dress close to the waist. But, to a soldier it has a more important function. In fact, he might wear two belts, one for his pants and another to carry his knife, a gun, a sword, his water container, and so forth. The belt is something that he puts his trust in. Everything is right there when he needs it. Overall, it gives him a sense of security and peace of mind. We have this same sense of security without realizing it. Think about the seat belts in your car. How about a baby's car seat, or anything that you may wheel a baby in? How about the person that works for a utility company, such as the telephone man that climbs a pole. There are many other areas in which a belt is used for security, but for the sake of time let us go on.

     Without question, we know that we are confronted on every side by problems daily. Things seem to be getting much worse all over the world as time goes on. Immoral conduct by the masses in the end time will be necessary if Satan is to draw others from their victory. I think you will agree if you've taken a look around lately. Therefore, we need to look at the belt of truth, not only from the physical side, but even more so from the spiritual side.

     From the Spiritual side, the Belt of Truth represents all the Truth that Yahweh has given us, not only for protection but for our ultimate victory. We can only receive that truth by reading our Bible, consistently hearing the word, and daily study. Letting the Spirit of Yahweh speak to our spirit. When this happens, the new birth begins to work in our lives. The Holy Spirit has given a new birth to your spirit, and by doing so has made you alive unto Yahweh! Your soul is now saved, or rather, now being saved, because of the regeneration which occurred in the innermost part of your being. Step by step. You become fitted with the armour designed for battle. Without the belt of truth holding everything together it is impossible to win the fight.

     Having on the belt of truth also helps us in our worship toward Yahweh. For we read in John 4:23 "they that worship him must worship him in spirit and truth." With the belt of truth on, this sets us apart from the rest of the world, and we need to stand steadfast in that truth and hold fast to that truth.

The Breastplate of Righteousness

     The second piece of armour mentioned is in the second part of Ephesians 6:14 "Having on the breastplate of righteousness." The breastplate is used in protecting the vital areas contained in the chest area, mainly for protecting the heart and lungs. As we all know, if the heart or lungs are pieced to any great extent, recovery of life becomes almost impossible. Therefore, this area must be protected, much like the foot soldier in King Arthur's day.

     On the Spiritual side, we quickly learn from reading this verse that the breastplate refers to righteousness and generally reflects upon the righteousness of Yahshua. For, if it were not for His righteousness we could not be saved. When we wear the breastplate of righteousness we now show that we are walking in truth like He did. We become children of Yahweh, our Heavenly Father, whereby we can call Him Abba (meaning Daddy).

     Now, 1 John 2:29 verifies what Ephesians 6:14 is saying: "If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him." Pointing to the fact that we are only saved through the righteousness of Yahshua, this verse clarifies that point. And, furthermore states, "every one that doeth (practices) righteousness is born of him."

     So that there is no confusion in what the latter part of this verse is saying, where it says "is born of him" needs to be explained, because some have used this verse to show that Yahshua was God. The word "born" as translated here comes from the Greek word # 1080 gennao {ghen-nah'-o}, from a variation of # 1085, and according to the Jewish sense of the word as used here: means - of one who brings others over to his way of life, to covert someone, or for an individual being of the same nature. This is the true meaning which should be applied to this verse, as many Bible Scholars agree.

     This same breastplate of righteousness is also described as "the breastplate of faith and love" in 1 Thessalonians 5:8. Therefore, we could say that we are wearing the breastplate of Faith and Love through the Righteousness of Yahshua. This sort of protection we need in order to walk in the example that was set before us.

     In looking at the final outcome of wearing this breastplate we only need to look at Revelation 22:14. "Blessed [are] they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city." As a regular foot soldier, his physical heart is protected; for us, our spiritual heart is protected as we are obedient to the Righteous Laws of Yahweh, His Statues, and all of His judgements. This is why it is vital for our spiritual well being to put on the breastplate of righteousness each and every morning before beginning our daily walk.

Having Our Feet Shod

     Ephesians 6:15 read's "And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace" KJV. The Amplified Version reads this way "And having shod your feet in preparation [to face the enemy with the firm-footed stability, the promptness, and the readiness produce by the good news] of the Gospel of peace."

     In both statements above, a perplexing question arises when it talks about Peace. How can one have shoes on - prepared for battle, and walk in peace at the same time? The answer to this question is best seen and explained in the Amplified Version where it says "to face the enemy." We know that Satan is a spiritual being, and our battle is with him as we have already seen in Ephesians 6:12, not with our neighbor as he would like for all of us to think. Therefore, when we are wearing the shoes which Paul has spoken of, we are not only being protected by walking in that truth, but we use the truth as a weapon against our spiritual enemy also. If we are walking in truth, we will also speak in truth. Within every part of the armour in which we are to use, all the parts are representing truth, and in this manner we can say that all the parts are used as weapons.

     In the natural world, in wearing shoes, the foot soldier's feet are protected from any rocky ground or terrain that he may have to travel over. For the spiritual soldier, the same is true when he is walking in the spiritual realm. Things can get pretty bumpy and rough at times.

     As to answering the second part of our perplexing question, Walking in Peace, we need to go to scripture once again. In Mark 16:15 Yahshua told us "Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature." When we are walking in these type of shoes, walking in peace, we are to preach and minister to others with the Good News, the Gospel of Truth. In this way we are directing our efforts in an offensive manner. The best defense is a good offence.

     Romans 10:15 reminds us "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" What we are doing is bringing glad tidings of good things to come, for those who will listen and obey. In all actuality, we are acting as a teacher of the word. Our Master, Yahshua, was our great teacher and we are called to be His example. A clear description of our Master's feet is given in Revelation 1:15. "And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters."

     If you know anything about the military, a person in line for inspection, his shoes played a major role in that inspection. In order for the person's shoes to past inspection, he would perform what is called a "spit-shine" in bringing them to a high luster of brilliancy. Just as Yahshua's feet were like highly polished brass, our's are to be likewise. Shining with the truth of the word in reflecting His message of an everlasting kingdom to come, when man will no longer be engaged in warfare.

     However, Satan doesn't want our shoes to shine, and part of his battle against us will be to make us think it's worthless and a hopeless task. Nevertheless, for our spiritual well being we must put on the shoes of protection, preach the message of Salvation, and stand steadfast in Faith. Which brings us to the next part of the armour.

The Shield Of Faith

     The Shield of Faith may be the most important of the armour pieces; In fact, I can boldly say that it is the most important part, as you will see in a moment. Ephesians 6:16 read's "ABOVE ALL, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." Notice what is written first "ABOVE ALL." The reason for this is what is said in Hebrews 11:6, "But without faith [it is] impossible to please [Yahweh]: for him that cometh to Yahweh must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."

     If one does not have Faith, how could you carry the Shield of Faith? Impossible and totally illogical according to this last verse! Faith has to be activated first before anyone can carry the Shield of Faith with good intent. Every person has been given a measure of this faith by which we are to work with as stated in Romans 12:3. If we do not activate that faith and build upon it, Yahweh won't even make acknowledgement of us. Sad, but true!

     As to how the shield of faith protects the spiritual soldier from Satan is revealed to us in Ephesians 6:16 also. It "quenches all the fiery darts." These are little arrows of fear, worry, doubt, mistrust, sickness, and much more, he sends at us. But, they now bounce right off that shield we are carrying.

     This shield of faith allows us to receive many promises. Hebrews 6:12 confirms this "That you be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises." Oops! There's that nasty word PATIENCE. Many of us become so impatience at times, yet, we are told here "faith and patience inherit the promises." Being patience is well worth it. So, be PATIENT, Yahweh knows when the timing is right.

     We are told in Romans 10:17 that our faith is increased by hearing, through the word of Yahweh. Our faith is constantly improved and strengthened through hearing, reading, and studying the Word. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that "faith has substance and gives us hope in the things we can not see." The longer we train ourselves in the ways of Faith, Spiritual growth is maintained, and the better skilled we will become in using this shield in actual combat. One's expertise in using his shield in combat could be the difference between life and death.

     Other great and wonderful promises of faith: We are "justified in circumcision and uncircumcision" (Romans 3:30); "justified by the blood" (Romans 5:9). Been "made wise unto salvation" (2 Timothy 3:15). We "understand" (Hebrews 11:3). We can "Receive the Spirit" (Galatians 3:14). We could go on and on. There are over seven thousand promises, check some out for yourself. But, above all, make sure that you can say "I have fought a good fight, I have finished [my] course, I have kept the faith" (2 Titus 4:7).

The Helmet Of Salvation

     Now we come to the final piece of armour used for defensive purposes as stated in Ephesians 6:17, "And take the helmet of salvation." This helmet of salvation is receive by having the shield of faith as seen in Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace are you saved THROUGH faith." If we don't have faith, we don't have salvation, and we won't have a helmet to put on.

     This helmet that we are to put on protects the spiritual-brain of the soldier. Our natural body already has what is known as the skull to protect the soft and fragile human brain. The spiritual helmet shields the spiritual brain. Although, all the parts of the human body are important, most feel that the brain may be the most important part due to the vast store house of power it holds, as seen in sending messages to all parts of the body. Basically, it is the control center telling all the other parts what to do.

     The brain is the intellect, personality, and represents the uniqueness of a person also. Protecting the brain is very important to our Heavenly Father, because through it we are going to be sealed as seen in Revelations 7:3 which refers to the forehead, and Ephesians 4:30 tells us why, "whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption." This same verse implies that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit. How is this so? Let us read the whole verse "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of Yahweh, whereby you are sealed unto the day of redemption." It's telling us here "not to grieve the Holy Spirit." If you have read the Bible, you know what can happen through grieving the Holy Spirit. However, as a True Believer the Holy Spirit now dwells within you and you become sealed according to what we just read. It is crucial that we protect our minds counter to anything and anyone that would cause us to quench the Spirit and our salvation. In this way we are protected and nothing can harm us.

     This helmet may seem heavy at times and we will want to take it off for a brief moment to cool down from the heat of an intense battle we may be in at the time. But, never let this take place, for the moment we do the enemy is surely going to step in and try to take control. Once the helmet of salvation is removed, you become spiritually in harm's way. Keep all the parts of the armour on and follow in the ways of Yahshua. The Father will be well pleased in your doing so.

Miscellaneous Armour

     Before we take a look at the only offensive weapon we have been given to use in our warfare, I would like to share with you something else that I found while researching material for these pages. This is found in 2 Corinthians chapter six.

     If anyone has seen a picture of a soldier clad in armour, you'll know that his whole body is covered. His head, chest and back area, arms, hands, legs, and feet are completely covered with metal. Making it quite hard to maneuver around. I understood why Paul only mention the parts that he did, because they covered the vital areas. However, I wondered about the parts for the arms, hands, and legs. They were not mentioned and I had not seen them mentioned any where else in the Bible. Until I came across 2 Corinthians 6 verse 7. Although, I have been reading the Bible for over twenty five years, and probably read this verse many times, never did I notice this: that verse read's as follows "By the word of truth, by the power of Yahweh, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left."

     Here was one of the missing parts, armour, gloves for the hands, in the form of righteousness. Everything that we do with our hands must be done in Righteousness: If we work in the fields, the home, at a job, or in the community. It is with the hands that we gather in the harvest of what we have sown. Our faith is made alive through the working of the hands; "Faith without works is dead" (James 2:26). In our hands we hold a precious gift called Wisdom. Proverbs chapter three and four speak of this. In Proverbs 3:16 we see "Length of days [is] in her right hand; [and] in her left hand riches and honour." Her is referring to the Hands of Wisdom. In our hands we hold "the length of days," meaning the time we will spend here on earth, and gives us eternal life in heaven. We receive "riches and honour," while honoring Yahweh at the same time. Many things are done with the hands, but let us go to the offensive end.

     Oh! By the way, if anyone comes across any of the other missing - minor parts, please let me know. Then, we can added them to what we already have.

The Sword Of The Spirit

     Now that all of you Believers out there have been equipped with protection and have your armour on, and before you can go into battle, you need something to fight with called a weapon. This is the only part of our equipment required for offensive purposes in warfare that we do not put on, but we hold it in our right hand. This offensive weapon has a twofold purpose. We can use this weapon in bringing the word of peace to many, or to destroy a spiritual enemy. In both our physical and spiritual battles this weapon, is mainly used to destroy. When this weapon is used in bringing peace, this weapon should be held in the heart of a person; Put into action through or with one's mouth.

     What is this weapon? Well! Ephesians 6:17 discribes this weapon as follows, "and take the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of Yahweh." Even though we have a description of this weapon, most of us are still left in the dark somewhat, because we can not see it. Therefore, what is the nature of this sword? The nature or quality of this sword is the Spirit of Yahweh, Himself. In the same verse which we are told about the sword, also defines the attribute, "which is the Word of Yahweh." The sword that we are to use is the Sword of the Spirit, which is Yahweh's Word. This is what defeats our spiritual enemy.

     When a foot soldier is in a physical battle, the sword is mainly used to pierce the heart. The heart is the life line of the human body, acting as a pump to push blood throughout the entire system. When the pumping valves stop, the blood stops, and life ceases. This was quite evident when the Roman soldier pierced the heart of Yahshua at Calvary. "But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water" (John 19:34). Even though Yahshua was said to be already dead, they had to make sure, and this was done by letting all the blood flow out of the body.

     The main purpose of the natural soldier is not just to wound his opponent, but to totally destroy him by cutting that life line off. Otherwise, THEY, that are wounded could recover and come back to fight another day. There are stories of this in the Bible: when one nation went out to destroy another nation and did not complete the job; Only to have that nation later - coming back to destroy them. We seem to have that problem all the time ourselves. With the enemy coming back and trying to destroy us, and is quite often seen being the case for many. Then, we as True Believers begin to wonder - Why? Why does Satan still seem to be winning in the lives of so many? The reason for this is that Satan has been given an appointed time to rule on earth, and when his time is up the warring on earth is going to be over. But, in the meantime, each one of us must "fight the good fight of faith" as we are told in 1 Titus 6:12. This is the main area of our spiritual warfare and to where our efforts are to be placed.

     A meaningful insight to spiritual warfare is given in 2 Corinthians 10:3-4, "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: For the weapons of our warfare [are] not carnal, but mighty through Yahweh to the pulling down of strong holds." Verse 5 gives the purpose, "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of Yahweh, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Yahshua Messiah."

     From the verses about, it is quite clear "that our war is not after the flesh." Secondly, "our weapon is not of a carnal nature," proving out what Ephesians 6:17 describes. Thirdly, we have been given the purpose in using the Sword of the Spirit, we are to "cast down imaginations" (thoughts), and every high thing (Kings, Leaders, Kingdoms) that exalteth itself against knowledge (Truth, Word) of Yahweh." And fourthly, being the most important thing of all, we are to carry and use our Sword in "obedience to Yahshua Messiah;" In obedience to His teachings which comes from the Father.

     We all fall short in being obedient to the things of Yahweh. However, Paul reminds us "And being in a readiness to punish all disobedience, once your obedience is complete (or fulfilled)" (2 Corinthians 10:6). We all know that everything won't be completed until the Second Coming of Yahshua takes place; And, even then, we will have to wait a thousand years before Satan is finally locked up for good. But, in the meantime we are to be in Readiness, carrying the Sword of the Spirit.

     Notice how Paul backs this statement up about being in readiness. He said, the reason for this was "to punish all disobebience." Then he goes on to say "once your obedience is complete." The implication given by Paul implies that disobedience is to be punished, and rightly so, but it cannot be done before our obedience is completed.

     The completion of our obedience only works by carrying the Sword of the Spirit, and is finished when Yahshua comes again. Yahshua is the finisher of our faith and our obedience. Nothing less, nothing more.

     In modern times, man has developed what seems to be a more sophisticated way of indulging in warfare and in producing destruction. Such as the invention of high powered rifles, bombs, missiles, and chemicals for germ warfare. Yet, man has failed to realize that the greatest weapon available to him is not man made. The Sword of the Spirit is greater than all of these weapons put together, and someday soon this will be proven out. Everything that is filthy and evil shall pass away from this earth one day, except that which is good. (See Isa. 64:6; 1 Peter 5:2; Jer. 8:13; Mt. 24:35; Mark 13:31; Luke 21:33; James 1:10; 2 Peter 3:10.

     The Sword of the Spirit holds the immense power and protection we need to use right now, in preparation for that wonderful day of Yahshua's coming. Yahshua laid the foundation for us, in an earthly manner, on how to use the Sword of the Spirit almost two thousand years ago. When Yahshua was confronted by Satan, He used the Sword of the Spirit against him. See the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, chapter four. Yahshua was tempted three times in the wilderness by Satan, and in all three times Yahshua quoted scripture back to him from the Old Testament. We are to do the same in our spiritual fight, using the whole council of Yahweh's Word. As we do this diligently we are more on the offensive and not so much on the defensive. Winning will be assured to the Believer.

     One, very important point overlooked by many, or just plainly forgotten about, is how do we quote scripture? This is done with one's mouth by means of the tongue. Let us see what the Bible says about the tongue. "Death and Life [are] in the Power of the Tongue" (Proverbs 18:21). Although this verse is speaking about spiritual life, the tongue certainly affects and has a great influence upon the natural too. Sometimes, we don't understand how powerful the tongue can be. The tongue acts like a powerful sword deeply piercing the hearts of others. Proverbs 12:18 verifies this fact by saying: "There are those whose thoughtless speech cuts like a sword."

     This smallest weapon - called the tongue, how strong, an influence it has on our daily walk with Yahshua Messiah and those around us, bringing life or death to the souls of whom hear our words. James prudently gives us a clear perceptive in this matter concerning the tongue, by saying: (5) "Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! (6) And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. (7) For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: (8) But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. (9) Therewith bless we Yahweh, the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of Yahweh. (10) Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. (11) Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet [water] and bitter? (12) Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so [can] no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. (13) Who [is] a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. (14) But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. (15) This wisdom descendeth not from above, but [is] earthly, sensual, devilish. (16) For where envying and strife [is], there [is] confusion and every evil work. (17) But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, [and] easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (18) And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace." (James 3:5-18)

     James gives us a wide range view reflecting upon our use of the tongue. However, we always need to be reminded that we are the ones that put the tongue into service. We are reminded in Proverbs 10:20 "The tongue of the just [is as] choice silver: the heart of the wicked [is] little worth." Since we have the breastplate of righteousness on and are following in it's pathway correctly, we are consider "just" and "worthy" in carrying our spiritual sword. Therefore, we must continue to maintain this great privilege and honor, for the glory of Yahweh.

     It is truly sad to see so many True Believers being defeated in their Christian walk. Therefore, as spiritual soldiers in warfare, put on your Armour daily, take up the Sword of the Spirit, and be on the Offensive. If you are constantly on the defensive, being backed into a corner, as Satan would like to have you, you'll never win the war. In a physical war, it is always the side that is on the offensive, the one moving forward, who becomes the victor. Let us do the same toward winning our Spiritual Victories.

     Too many times we become so entangled in worldly affairs that we falter in our weaknesses. We have been told to be strong in hardness. Look at what Paul said in admonishing (giving good advice) Timothy: "Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of [this] life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier" (2 Timothy 2:3-4, KJV).

     Another version puts it this way "You must therefore suffer hardships with me, as a loyal soldier of Yahshua Messiah. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life; so that he may please the one who has chosen him to be a soldier."

     Every True Believer is a chosen soldier, and as a chosen soldier we are going to face hardships. Paul tells us to endure these hardships. In order to endure, we must be Strong. Strong in the - Word of Truth. Paul goes on to say in verse 5, "And if a man also strive for masteries, [yet] is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully." As we "strive for masteries," with the sword, we will receive a crown of glory from the Father, just as Yahshua received His crown of glory in defeating the adversary. However, we are reminded again, to do it "lawfully," meaning in Truth of the Word.

     In closing on this study about the Whole Armour of Yahweh, remember to put on your armour daily, carry your sword with faithfulness, and in righteousness for Yahweh's Glory. The sword we carry is a mighty tool for bringing peace to men of all Nations, and used just as mighty as a weapon in defeating our spiritual foes.

     "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him [be] glory in the assemblies through Yahshua Messiah throughout all ages, world without end. Amen." (Ephesians 3:20-21)
