Why We Need To Study The Bible For Ourselves

Too often, which is the case with most people, they never take the time to study the Bible for themselves. Primarily they will leave it up to a minister to pass on the information to them. This can become a serious problem for an individual if they are seeking real truth as it is written in the Bible. For, no matter how rightous a person may seem to be, or how sincere they may be, they could be sincerely wrong, including myself. This is why I always say: “Check out what is being said by making sure that Scripture can back it up, through using the Whole Council of Yahweh’s Word.”

If one is looking to chose life, eternal life that is, each one needs to take a look at Yahweh’s Word - who provides the way to life, and not exclusively to man’s perspective. As we look around the world today, we could say that we are living in the time Paul warned Timothy about: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears” (2 Timothy 4:3).

What did Paul mean by “having itching ears?” Well, how many times have you heard some one say “I heard that a certain preacher is going to be at such and such a place, why don’t we go and check him out and see what he has to say?” Or, “I heard that prophet so and so is going to be at this particular church tonight, maybe we should check him out. He might have a personal word for us.” Friends, in all kindness, all the knowledge that you’ll ever need to know, or to one’s future - is already outlined in the Written Word. Because nominal teachings are straying further and further from a sound and solid Bibical foundation, we need to go direct to the source ourselves. Otherwise, one could get caught up in deception.

This in no way implies that one should not listen to a preacher, teacher, or even a prophet, for it is written in Romans 10:14 “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?” All of this information that you are being given to why you should study the Bible is merely to let you know what can happen by you not studying for yourself and listening only to what man has to say.

Scripture distinctly states in 2 Titus 2:15 “Study to shew thyself approved unto Yahweh(God), a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” This verse did not say for the minister to study for you to be approved, but clearly says for you to “Study to show THYSELF approved.” Secondly, it says for us to “rightly divide the word of truth.” This can only be done by allowing the Spirit of Yahweh to teach us in all truth (John 14:26). And, Romans 8:14 gives us the main reason “For as many as are led by the Spirit of Yahweh, they are the sons of Yahweh.”

From the verse that we just read in 2 Titus, Bible Study is not just an OPTION, but it is a COMMAND. Obedience to the Scriptures may not always be very popular at times, but in order to be OBEDIENT to our Heavenly Father, we must OBEY. Yes! People will fight endlessly against what the Bible is really saying. They’ll have all kinds of human reasons for not following the TRUTH, such as, not keeping the Saturday Sabbath or the Seven Special Feast Days that were to be keep from generation to generation. Any wonder why we see so many people with more personal problems then ever before, and why they are not being blessed? If you remember, it was through the disobedience of Adam and Eve that they lost their blessings. Are you receiving all the blessings that you should? If your answer is NO, or you might have some doubts, then why not study the Bible and begin to apply those things into your life.

Once a person becomes born again (spiritually), a process of development should begin. For you have become a “New Creature, old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2Corinthians 5:17). In becoming a new creature you now have a duty and responsibilities. Your responsibility to this commitment starts through what is called Renewing of the Mind. Romans 12:2 reads “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of Yahweh.” Transformation of an individual follows when a person’s mind is renewed in studying the Word. Replacing old thoughts with new thoughts, and learn how to walk in those new thoughts. Old habits of a sin nature are changed into new habits of righteousness, before Yahweh.

There will be some people who will say - I don’t need to study the Word, all I need to do is hear the Word, “For faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Yahweh” (Romans 10:17). What this verse says is true. However, what one does not understand is that there is a difference between faith and the purpose for studying. You just read what 2 Titus 2:15 said above. Are these just idol words? If there was no purpose for one to study there would be no need for this verse to be put here. Through personally study you get to know exactly what the Word is saying for yourself and the chances of becoming deceived by any false doctrine is held to a minimal. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 cautions us “Let no man deceive you by any means.” Hearing false doctrine is a means.

Through hearing the Word as stated in Romans 10:17, over and over again merely is the way in which one strengthens his or her faith in what one already knows through studying. We need to be reminded daily lest we forget what we have learned. Because so many people, including Christians, have become so indoctrinated by what others have told them that they are continuously tossed to and fro. Remember, Christianity is not a religion as many have tried to make it. Christianity is a way of life, a godly kind of life. And, the Bible is our Instruction Manual toward living that godly kind of life.

In studying the Bible for yourself, you’ll learn many things, such as, Yahweh’s Laws that were never done away with; What it means and how to truly worship Him; How to pray effectively and to whom; What Holidays to keep and which ones not to keep; You’ll learn about His will for your life, and etc..

Lets go on a quick journey into a few of the things just mentioned. Many people have come to believe that they cannot know the Will of the Father for their life, because man has said that it is not possible to know the things of Yahweh. But, Yahshua said: “it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 13:11). Knowing Yahweh’s Will for your life is part of these mysteries, they are all part of the workings that keep the Kingdom running perfectly, and Yahshua said that you could know.

Ephesians 1:11 tells us “In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.” From reading this verse it is very clear that each one of us has been predestinated for a purpose and according to His (Yahweh’s) will. Every man, woman and child is being called for service, and to serve in the Family of Yahweh. All those who have accepted Yahshua Messiah, as their sacrifice for the attonement of sin now have a personal responsibility in carrying out that duty.

Paul spoke about this in 1 Corinthians 3:10 when he said “According to the grace of Yahweh which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation (based on the teachings of Yahshua), and another buildeth thereon.” Although, Paul was speaking about himself here, he also referred to others who would continue to build thereon. This is part of our service to Yahweh. However, in the last part of that same verse, Paul gives us this warning “But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.” It is only through knowing the Word that one is able to work and serve entirely in truth - building thereupon. The foundation has already been built and we are to keep building until Yahshua returns.

When it comes down to praying, you’ll soon learn that many people are praying to the wrong person. They may seem to be getting their prayers answered, but which spirit are they coming from? We are told in the Word that there is “only one mediator between Yahweh and man” (1 Titus 2:5). Yet, how many today do you see praying to more than one person? Just more deception. Study, learn for yourself who you should be praying to and how. An angel of light is certainly on the scene with blessings, but who is he? Matthew 24:24 and Mark 13:22 warns us about great signs and wonders taking place in endtimes that could deceive even the elect.

We’ll take a look at one more point of interest before moving on. When it comes to what day believers are to worship on (which may be the biggest factor involving blessings being withheld) man has chosen Sunday as that day. Again, we have been deceived by man’s way of thinking and through changing Yahweh’s Law. Yahweh told us to work six days and on the seventh day (the last day of the week) we were to rest and give unto Him reverence on this day. Notice what Exodus 16:23 says “And he (Moses) said unto them, This [is what] Yahweh hath commanded, Tomorrow (Saturday being refered to in their day) [is] to be a day of rest, a Holy Sabbath unto Yahweh.”

Many people will say “What difference does it make to what day we worship Him on, as long as we worship Him? With man’s way of thinking, none. But, who gave the command, man or Yahweh? In Exodus 20:10-11 reads “But the seventh day [is] the Sabbath of Yahweh your Heavenly Father. For [in] six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that [is] in them, and rested the seventh day: Therefore, Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.” In these two verses Yahweh said that “He blessed the Sabbath Day and hallowed it.” In other words, He sanctified this day as a very special day. The Sabbath Day was made for man, not the other way around. Check this out for yourself. Even Yahshua keep the Saturday Sabbath. If He is our example in which we are to follow in, what are we doing following in man’s ways? Think about that!

Now we come to what I believe to be the most important factor in studying the Bible. You must, without question, allow the Spirit to teach you and not man. Even though man is used by Yahweh in certain ways to teach us, we must allow the Spirit that dwells within us to rightly divide the truth from that which is not truth. 1 John 4:6 says “We are of Yahweh: he that knoweth Yahweh heareth us; he that is not of Yahweh heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.” Just as Yahweh is the Spirit of truth, Satan is the spirit of error and wants to deceive us. This is why we are told “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of Yahweh: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils (1 Titus 4:1). “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away” (2 Titus 3:5). See 2 Peter 2:1 also. As you can see, we have scripture backing up scripture. If you had not studied your Bible, would you have known of these things?

Being led by the Spirit in the truest sense, also helps us in the “purifying of our souls” as stated by Peter in 1 Peter 1:22, and is without doubt done by “obeying the truth through the Spirit.” It is only through the Spirit of Yahweh that we can learn all truth. See John 16:13, 14:17, 15:26; 1 Cor. 2:10,13; 1 John 2:20, 27.

Remember, as you begin to study Yahweh’s Word, Satan is going to be sitting right by your side, or right next to your ear, to plant thoughts in order to try and deceive you. He doesn’t want you to know the things of Yahweh. Study to receive the Fullness of the Word, which will not only help you in building your own faith, but in helping others. Also, you can become more effective in your prayer life, when praying for others, or yourself. You’ll gain the knowledge needed to protect yourself from the adversary, as Hosea 4:6 has stated, causing so many to be destroyed. “My people are destroyed for LACK of KNOWLEDGE.”

Now, here are some helpful hints to help you study the Bible. Due to the fact that we have become accustomed to instant this and instant that, remember that Yahweh looks for steady growth and development in - Spiritual Things and not instant Perfection. As you begin to study the Bible, make sure that you pray, getting yourself right before Yahweh, and ask for His Spirit to lead you in your study. Give yourself plenty of time in this important matter. Find yourself a quit place away from all outside distractions, such as kids, telephones and etc.. Have a pencil and paper to write down things the Spirit may reveal to you, for further review later. You need to do this because you might forget some of the things revealed that are very important for you to know. Then, later on, you can check out the scriptures to make sure what you have heard lines up with the Word. Studying the Bible is really quite simple, depending upon one's willingness to read, study, and meditate upon the Word daily.

Remember, Yahshua came “to give us life, and life more abundantly” (John 10:10), and we are to express Yahweh’s Love to others through Him. The Christian Faith as taught and practiced by Yahshua is the only answer. If we would only realize the " Law of Love," then there would be no bad relations, no bad marriages, no need to fear rapidly rising crime rates or a moral decline. Romans 13:10 says "Love worketh no ill to one's neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law." However, we need to STUDY to know all the things about LOVE.
