COMMAND STRUCTURE AND ASSIGNMENTS OF THE FIRST FLORIDA CAVALRY REGIMENT (DISMOUNTED)

Please note that GEN Cheatham is shown as a LTG on 20 November 1864 and later as a MG (one rank lower) on 10 December 1864. The reason is that for the next three years he commanded his division in Polk's Corps and was promoted to MG on 10 March 1862. During the Franklin-Nashville Campaign he succeeded GEN Hardee as Corps Commander and is incorrectly listed in the B&L order of battle as LTG. He was never reduced in grade and researchers argue over whether or not he ever was a LTG. This has always caused confusion among historians and is a well-known anomaly among Civil War historians. Cheatham's Corps was also known as I-Corps, Polk's Corps, and Hardee's Corps before it became Cheatham's Corps. After the war Cheatham became a farmer.
