A Short Story

Short Story

I.

Demeter glared up at the sun, drinking in the warmth, closing her eyes. She began to hum a song, though she didn't know what particular song it was. Demmy was lying on top of an old Chevy Pickup truck, paws up in the air, basking in the sun. How beautiful a day to just lie around.

"Excuse me, may I barge in on your meditation?" A familiar voice asked. Demeter looked up to see the bright violet eyes of her best friend Munkustrap.

"Sure!" She always had time for Munkustrap. He always listened, and was there for her.

"How have you been?" He asked.

"Normal. I have been trying to fall asleep, because I have been really tired lately." Demeter answered. "You?"

"Just the same as always!" He said, flinging his paws wide open. He blushed.

Whenever he looks at Demeter or thinks of her, his heart just melts.

The same thing for Demeter. She loved Munkustrap so much! She just was too shy too say anything. Plus, he was busy learning about the ways of Old Deuteronomy, since he was going to be leader soon. Old Duet was getting pretty old.

Demeter washed her paws. "I guess I'll see you later!" She walked off, blushing. When she got to her chamber, she decided to clean up a bit. There was old food everywhere, old collars, and smelly flea cream her old master had tried to give her.

Demeter threw all the food in the trash bin, along with the collars and flea cream. She gagged, "I can't believe my master gave this to me!" She went through an oven where there were pictures and letters written by old friends. She went through them all. One from Etcetera, Rumpleteazer, Jemima, Sillabub, and a couple from her male friends, Misto, Munkustrap, and Rum Tum Tugger.

She glanced at one, and fear struck in her heart. It was a letter from Macavity.

"Why didn't you tell me you had kittens with me!?" It demanded.

Demeter remembered right before she came to the Jellicles, that Macavity had found her, kept her, used her, and gave her kittens. She had always tried to hide it from all the cats. Every week, she went to visit her kittens. They were kept in an empty building, where the four were kept warm with a blanket and had enough food to last them the week. Demeter took great care of them.

Sometimes she had to steal from the trash cans of other cats. She hated to do it, but it was the only way to have food. She never thought about it that much. Demeter tried to forget about it, and go to sleep.

While she was sleeping...

"Demeter, please don't leave me!" Macavity wailed. "I love you!" He grabbed her with his claws. Scratching her.

"Macavity I love you too, but I can't live like this. I'm not a bad person! You are. I'm going." She tried to walk out the door, but was stopped by the evil ginger cat.

"One more thing..." He grabbed her, and laid her down on the ground...

Then Demeter found herself in an alley. She had just discovered she was pregnant. "Oh no... and they are with Macavity, so no one will accept them!"

A couple weeks later ( in the dream), she had her kittens, and put them in an empty building. She came back almost every day, while she tried to find a tribe that would accept her.

Macavity had written her this letter, after she was with the Jellicles, because someone told her that she had kittens. "Why didn't you tell me!" He snarled. She tried to keep the kittens secret all this time...

Demeter woke up in a cold sweat. "Why did he do that to me!" She thought, crying. "I am never going to be accepted if I tell the Jellicles! They will banish me for sure!" She got up, though it was only 4:30 in the morning. She couldn't sleep.

She sneaked down to the abandoned building, where she could hear her kittens meows. "Don't worry, it's only mommy." She kissed them all, one by one.

"Mommy! You're here!" Cried the littlest one, Ishkabibble. The three eldest, Jade, Millenium, and Nanitiger, sat there quietly.

"Mommy, our Daddy came by to see us." Jade said in a somber tone. Demeter gasped. Why was Macavity here?!

"He told us if he saw us here again, he's murder us!" Nanitiger said, in a hysterical voice. "What are we going to do?"

"I don't know, kittens. I just don't know." She hugged them all, and stayed with them that night.

"Munkustrap, where has Demeter been?" Old Deuteronomy asked. "She is not supposed to leave the Junkyard, for her fear of Macavity.

"Yes, I think that her fear of Macavity is why she's gone. I shall go look for her." Munkustrap answered. "It is my responsibility." He left in a hurry.

He padded through all of the buildings on Victoria Grove, and started on the ones near Macavity's lair. He heard a pathetic mew coming through the walls of a yellow office building. He decided to look in the window. The site gave him a terrified fright, for it was Demeter, with 4 kittens.

"...Yes, everything will be okay." He heard her say. Munkustrap fell asleep, listening to the sounds of Demeter sing her kittens to sleep.

That next morning, Munkustrap woke up just in time to see Demeter sneak back to the Junkyard. "I'll get her." he said.

Munkustrap went over to the Vicarage wall, where Old Deuteronomy was lying in the sun. "What is it, my son?" He asked.

"I saw Demeter with 4 kittens at her side. She was telling them, 'Everything will be all right, and she was singing them to sleep." Munkustrap was glad he had found out.

"Well, go see to the bottom of this!" Old Duet demanded quietly.

Munkustrap ran over to Demeter's place, where he knocked on her door. "Demmy, it's me. Open up!"

Demeter's ears pricked up. Perhaps he knew! "Oh no, oh no, oh no!" she whispered to herself. She opened up the door frightfully. Munkustrap barged in.

"I demand to know the bottom of this, Demmy." He said, putting his paw on her shoulder.

"Okay, Munk." She answered sadly.

"Well, go on. Why are you always going to see these kittens?" He got restless, wondering what it could be.

"I'm sorry. Munk, before I was a Jellicle, Macavity stole me away from my family." She began to cry.

"I knew it had something to do with Macavity!" He hissed.

"And he made me mate with him several times. He became a nice cat only to me, so I could handle it. I thought of him as my mate. But then I saw him kill my parents, and everything changed. I decided to leave." She layed down on the mat.

"About three weeks later, I found out that I was pregnant with kittens. I birthed them myself, and kept them in the old office building, while I looked for a tribe who would accept me."

"And then what happened?" Munkus asked.

"Last night, I had gotten a warning from Macavity that he had found the kittens, and if he sees them there once more, he will kill them. I was worried, and stayed with them the whole night." She wiped her paws across her moist eyes.

"I'm sorry, Munk. You can banish me forever. I did something horrible, and I'm ready to pay for it. Go ahead, I'm ready." She closed her eyes tight, waiting for the news.

"Demmy, you didn't do anything bad at all, except for maybe letting Macavity take control over you. We're not going to banish you, just love you more. Like I love you" He gave her a hug and licked her ears.

"Really?" Demmy asked.

"Of course. Now we have to go get those kittens before Macavity finds them again!" He called for Mistoffolees, Mungojerrie, Pouncival, and Tantomile, and they all went to the building.

As the six reached the building, they heard pathetic mews, and Macavity's snarl. "I'm going to get you!" He hissed. Munkustrap ran inside.

"Stop it, Macavity! They are poor little kittens! Leave them alone!" He snarled.

"And why, my precious little brother?"

"Because they really belong to Demeter, not you!" He snapped at Macavity.

The two broke out in a fight, while Mistoffolees turned invisible, and sneaked the kittens away. He whisked them outside. "Come on, Munk, let'sgo!"

Munkustrap hit Macavity one more time, then ran outside. "You'll pay for that!" Macavity screamed.

"You know he won't, I know my brother!" Munkustrap ran up beside them, walking home. He gave Demeter a hug, and a lick on the cheek. "I love you, you know that?"

She blushed. "I love you too, you brave Tom."

They nuzzled the whole way home. "Momma! Why are you doing that?" Ishkabibbke asked loudly. They all laughed.

As the group entered the Junkyard, a cheer grew. Jennyanydots ran up to them. "Oh Demeter, your kittens are so precious!" She hugged them. "I am Auntie Jenny!"

Bombalurina slinked over. "And I am Bomby, Your mom's sister. I guess that makes me an aunt." She smirked.

All the cats padded up and introduced themselves. Last, Munkustrap came up to the kittens. "And I am your uncle Munkus."

"No, it would be better calling you Dad." Demeter said lovingly.

"All right." Munkustrap announced "I am your father."

A cheer grew louder and louder. "Hooray for Demeter's kits!" The cats all cheered.

Demeter began to cry. "I love you, Munkustrap, you are the best father there ever was." She hugged him, tighter than before.

A couple weeks later, Munkustrap and Demeter were pronounced as Tom and Queen. They are expecting kittens, and they will be dukes and duchesses, along with the older ones, who will never see Macavity again terrorizing their lives.
