If you'd like to see whether either Good News Weekend or Good News Week featured in the top ten of ratings for a particular week, visit the Ratings page. This deals with the number of viewers in Sydney, and the ratings themselves have been taken from The Sydney Morning Herald, who got them from ACNielsen. It's a little incomplete, however
Okay, I've also started to collect articles on the other people
who have appeared on the shows. If you know of some that I don't,
your mission, if you choose to accept it is to ... tell me about them!
Thanks.
There are also articles on other projects that they have been involved in, and these follow.
This show started with the Good News Week team *babysitting* Roy & H.G.'s 9.30pm Saturday timeslot on the ABC in 1998. Along with Good News Week, it has moved to Channel 10 along the Eastern Seaboard, or Southern Cross Television in Tasmania. Currently, the show runs for a massive hour and a half on Thursday nights from 8.30pm, and is known as Good News Week Lite
I've tried to compile a list of the songs that have been sung on the show. If you have a more comprehensive knowledge, please, please, please contact me.
I've encountered only a few articles to do with the actual show. Most of these are to do with its old incarnation on the ABC:
This show has undergone has had quite a colorful history.
It was initially modelled on a successful British panel show
Have I Got News For You. It premiered on the ABC in
March 1996 with a half hour show. . Due to poor ratings,
it was very nearly canned at the end of its first season,
but much public outcry resulted in it being re-instated.
It ran very successfully in 1997-98, consistently rating in the
top 90 programs viewed by Sydneysiders.
At the end of 1998, the future looked very grim indeed, with the
ABC hesitant about re-signing them. Channel 10 appeared to make
the GNW team a good deal, and so the show moved to a Sunday night
slot, and expanded to an hour long show.
These are articles on GNW that don't exclusively
involve Paul. Some even involve other people to do with the show!
Mikey has been writing articles for The City Weekly since September 1998. I've typed up a few of them, but a lot more are to come!
Good News Week productions released a book in November 1997,
just in time for the Christmas rush. It was supposed to be a
celebration of all things Good News Week, with mini-games
they had played on the show, and screen shots of some panelists.
Although the cover was in glorious technicolour (the cards
they use on Good News Weekend look rather familiar . . .
unsold covers of the books perhaps . . . ), the content was
printed in black and white. I personally thought it was a lame
attempt at cashing in on GNW's sucess,
and not worth the $16.95. Some reviews and plugs for the book
follow.
A second book, surprisingly called Good News Week Book 2, was
released near the end of 1998.
The Good News Week album was released in March 1998, through the EMI Music Group, and Virgin Records. It contains snippets from Paul's various monologues from both the 1996 and 1997 seasons of Good News Week - shows that even I had been to! I think it retails for $25 at all ABC shops. Guess which lucky creature got a copy before the official release ... ?
At the end there are three songs taken from the 1997 season finale/New Year special filmed at the Enmore Theatre:
Even though I think Paul's version of the Hunters & Collectors'
classic is a rather tacky eighties-style remake, I will never
forgive you awful creatures who went to that taping and screamed over Paul's
gorgeous voice. That is a sin which even the Devil would condemn you for.
These are articles and snippets on people who have appeared on either Good News Week or Good News Weekend at one time or another. Just to whet that obsessive enthusiasm ...
Kate Fischer had a part as a university student (postgraduate?) in the Ensemble Theatre's production of Blinded by the Sun, written by Stephen Poliakoff. The season ran from June 11 to July 4 at the Sydney Opera House Playhouse. Before that she had spent 3 months in New York at an acting school. She is currently engaged to James Packer.
Here are some general articles that talk about all three fabulous people:
If you know of any other articles that talk to, with, or about Paul, Richard or Tim, or any of their projects, please drop me a line about who, what, where &c. so I can track them down. Ta!
