Archdiocese of St. Louis. Established 1826, created an Archbishopric in 1847. Comprises that part of the State of Missouri east of Chariton River and of the west line of the countries of Cole, Maries, Pulaski, Texas and Howell. Most Rev. John Joseph Kain, D.D., Archbishop of St. Louis, cons. Bishop of Wheeling, W.Va., on May 23d, 1875, titular Archbishop of Oxrynchia and Coadjutor cum jure successionis of Archbishop of St. Louis 1893, Administrator of Archdiocese of St. Louis December 14th, 1893, created Archbishop of St. Louis on May 21st, 1895.
