As late as it was, this was my first hike this year...kinda weird for me. Anyways, I went on this trip with my dad and 2 of my friends from school: Amy and Kristin. Amy had stayed overnight, so in the morning we just had to pick up Kristin, get a parking pass, and head up the trail. This wonderful trail I am speaking of is 3 3/4 miles with an elevation gain of 1700 feet (which is not nearly as steep as climbing Mt. Si, for those of you who know what I'm talking about).
I was allowed to drive there, which was good...and we got there in one piece, which was even better. The parking lot is paved and there is a bathroom, well, sorta. Being that all but one of us (Amy) were out of shape, you can imagine the great things we said once we got going. :) But even so we made it up to the lake in 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 23 seconds (approx.). Moving right along, the scenary is fantastic with views of Humpback Mtn. and the surrounding areas. Little waterfalls are everywhere, including a pretty nice one near the start of the trail, where a bridge crosses it. The trail itself is rocky and at times bouldery. (Well, it's a word now!) All major creeks and mudholes have bridges, and even on a Friday there were lots of people up there. One downside of the trip was the great population of flies and mosquitoes - bring bug repellent.
The creek that runs into the lake comes in as a waterfall on a big slab of rock. Getting close enough for a picture is difficult, but it can be done...or so we're told. If you want to camp up there on a nice sunny summer weekend, arrive on Thursday to get a site...there are some nice ones up there, but it can be kinda crowded. Fires are permitted from what we could tell, so if they're not then the ranger district isn't doing it's job. :)
Once up there, we found a spot for lunch and fed fish cookie crumbs. Once we got exploring, we found lots of brush and lots of frogs. Time constraints prevented us from walking all around Annette Lake, but it was a fun trip anyway. The way back was, of course, easier going. The whole hike took about 7 hours.
